surprise!

I have a favor to ask:

Does anyone know of any good (and preferably educational) word games, besides Free Rice, that you can play online? One of my classes need to practice their vocabulary, and since they all love to use their laptops, I figured that some form of computer game would be preferable over toiling with dictionaries, pen and paper. Help me do my job so I don't have to.

It was my first day of teaching without any guidance today, and it went pretty well. Funnily enough, the class I'm always most nervous about working with gave me the least trouble today. I don't know if they've decided to deem me worthy to teach them or if they're trying to lull me into a false sense of security, but so far, so good. One of the students even complimented me! She said that I was better at explaining things in a way she understood than most of her other teachers. Once again, I don't know how genuine she was in her assesment of my skills as a teacher, but I'm choosing to take it as an honestly meant compliment.

Oooh yeah, everything's coming up Milhouse.

In fandom related news, kink_bingo is up and running, so if you're up for writing some kink fic (any fandom, any pairing or moresome), you should definitely sign up. There's no obligation to finish what you've started, but there will be fabulous prizes (and the undying admiration of your peers) to be won. A lot to gain and nothing to lose in other words. DO EEET - THE INTERNET NEEDS MOAR PORN.

Hah.

You know that administrator I was supposed to talk with last week? The one I couldn't find? You know WHY I couldn't find him? It turns out that I'd gotten him mixed up with someone else. No wonder he didn't reply to my email. Everything worked out in the end, so it doesn't really matter, but it is pretty typically me to spend several days searching for the wrong person.

So, new term, new course, new people. I've only known them for a day, but so far I really like my group. I was lucky enough to end up with people just as sarcastic as me, and it's very liberating not having to keep my sense of humor in check all the time.

Wednesday

I was forced to participate in a poetry performance today. I didn't spontaneously combust from embarrassment, which I'm choosing to interpret as a good sign. We sang, we danced walked around in a circle, and we read our own crappy poems for the rest of the class and generally made asses of ourselves (all in the spirit of furthering our knowledge of didactic practice, I'm sure).

Sometimes I really fucking hate university.

I'd spent the day before (and night, unfortunately) writing an essay.

So I have a home-exam due tomorrow. In case anyone’s wondering what that is, it’s an unholy cross between an essay and a normal exam. It’s supposed to end up five pages long, and I’m basically just making shit up at this point. AHAHAHA I’M SO FUCKED IT’S NOT EVEN FUNNY. Why couldn’t they have given us a normal assignment? And, I dunno, something with readable instructions maybe?

SO SO SCREWED

and yet I don't really care, which is what's worrying me the most

I'm eating candy and moaning in delight when it hits me; those were supposed to be used as study aids, not as a dinner substitute.

Unless I start writing on my essay right this fucking minute, I'm going to be so very, very screwed come Friday. SO WHY CAN'T I STOP TRAWLING FOR SCHMOOP?

Last semester, there were three slash fangirls (not counting me) in my class. I only found out because, by a stroke of luck, we'd all been placed together in a discussion group, and one let it slip that she downloaded House every week. One thing led to another and someone else mentioned the word "fanfiction", and suddenly we were all admitting to being slash fen (in different fandoms, but still).

This semester, there are two Alan Rickman fans and one hardcore Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie fan in my class. I found out about the Alan Rickman fans because they were admiring my drawing of Snape. We'd been given the assignment to draw a scene from any fantasy book aimed at young people and then talk about it with the rest of the class (sometimes, university feels a lot like preschool). It was a group assignment, but I was the only one in my group who volunteered to draw. We ended up doing the boggart scene in PoA, and my Snape apparently struck a chord with people.

The Fry&Laurie fan was discovered during a lecture on the fantasy genre. One girl casually mentioned to me that she liked the audio book, and I exclaimed, "... with Stephen Fry!" and she nodded enthusiastically. I lent her my J&W and QI DVDs, and today we spent one hour discussing Fry and Laurie. I love talking about fannish stuff IRL. :)

Lesson learned: There are a lot of fannish people about. It just takes luck and some careful probing to find them.

Shameless, utterly shameless.

I *adore* my Swedish Litt teacher. She's the most adorable woman I've ever met. She's this older, short, boyish woman, with an obvious dye-job and her jeans hiked up to her armpits and she's just too cute for words. What I like about her is that she's so excited about her subject – This monday she was supposed to lecture us on the Iliad and the Odyssey, but she used up all the time going off on tangents about the Trojan war, so she ended the lecture with, "You're supposed to work amongst yourself on the seminar this week, but I'll talk more about Odysseus then." Then, today at the seminar, she used up the whole 1.5 hour to finish her Odyssey talk. Half the class sighs and finds her unbearable to listen to, the other just smiles fondly at her. The lack of organization! The haphazard fashion sense! The utter devotion to *her* favourite authors! She's me, only older, shorter and fond of 20th century poetry.

Good news for my collection of Joe Flanigan movies; I’m now the proud owner of the snooze-fest "Farewell to Harry". I'd heard that it was mediocre (true), but that Joe was very pretty in it (also true).

I had an exam today. It was scheduled from 9 AM to 3 PM, which led me to believe that I'd be done somewhere around noon. I was wrong. It just took me a little over one and a half hour to finish the damn thing, and now I'm not sure whether that's because I'm just that smart good at playing the system or just that stupid. Personally, I think it went well which, in turn, makes me feel like I'm committing academic fraud. I don't cheat, obviously, but I do have a knack for floating through exams easily because of my bullshitting skills. Should I feel guilty about that? I do, somewhat, when I talk with co-students who aren't as lucky.

Friday! ... no wait, Thursday.

My Swedish Litt teacher is very sweet and she obviously cares deeply about her subject, but I really wish that she'd use more accessible examples when she’s trying to explain the finer points of literary criticism. She mentions these old Swedish poets in passing, as if she expects us to have more than a passing acquaintance with their work, when it’s very clear that we don’t. It’s a bit counterproductive, I think. If she used examples taken from popular literature, her lectures would make more of an impact. Still, I can’t help liking her a little. She’s such a dear.

Anyway, in honour of the leaked rough-cut version of the season premiere of Stargate: Atlantis (no sound effects! People saying "beep" in the background! No music! – STILL AWESOME), I’m going to post a picspam focusing on the finer points of the show. Collapse )
Oh, and there’s also some life-sucking space vampires hell-bent on killing all of humanity, a few space-nazi wannabees and a flying city to look at somewhere in-between the fuzzy character moments. ;)

ME = STOOOOPID

Tuesday

Teacher: "Remember, April 27 you've got a group examination."
Me: Oookay, Thursday 27, examination; Check.

Wednesday

Me: Note to self: remember examination on Friday 27th.

Thursday

Guy in class talking to someone else: "I'm so not looking forward to the examination this afternoon".
Me: *oblivious* "Lalala"

Friday

Me: "Helloo? Where are everyone?"
Corridor: *deserted*
Me: *checks calendar* "Oh. OH."
Memory: *PWNT*

The first thing I did when I got home was to email the teacher, asking her if I could perhaps be allowed to write her an essay or something instead. Hopefully she's not too pissed with me. The fact that I got 100% on the latest exam might work in my favour, because that means that she knows that I am serious about my studies. I'm just not that bright.
