A - Ships that you currently like a lot. (They don’t have to be OTPs because not everyone has OTPs.) Friendships, pairings, threesomes, etc. are allowed. B - A pairing–platonic, romantic or sexual–that you initially didn’t consider, but someone changed your mind. C - A ship you have never liked and probably never will. D - A pairing you wish you liked but just can’t. E - Have you added anything cracky/hilarious to your fandom? If so, what? F - What’s the longest you’ve ever been in a fandom? G - Have you ever had an OTP? If so, do you remember your first one? Who was in it? H - What is your favorite source text for fandom stuff (e.g., TV shows, movies, books, anime, Western animation, etc.)? I - Has Tumblr caused you to stop liking any fandoms, if so, which and why? J - Name a fandom you didn’t think about until you saw it all over Tumblr. (You don’t have to care about it or follow it; it just has to be something that Tumblr made you aware of.) K - What character has your favorite development arc/the best development arc? L - Say something genuinely nice about a character who isn’t one of your faves. (Characters you’re neutral about are fair game, as are characters you merely dislike. Characters that you absolutely loathe with the fire of ten thousand suns are exempt, as there is no point in giving yourself an aneurysm over a character that you hate.) M - Name a character that you’d like to have for a friend. N - Name three things you wish you saw more or in your main fandom (or a fandom of choice). O - Choose a song at random. Which ship or character does it remind you of? P - Invent a random AU for any fandom (we always need more ideas). Q - A fandom you’ve abandoned and why. U - Three favorite characters from three different fandoms, and why they’re your favorites. V - Which character do you relate to most? W - A trope which you are virtually certain to hate in any fandom. X - A trope which you are almost certain to love in any fandom. Y - What are your secondhand fandoms (i.e., fandoms you aren’t in personally but are tangentially familiar with because your friends/people on your dash are in them)? Z - Just ramble about something fan-related, go go go!
For 30th Dec, colls asked, if you were to create a tv show entirely from scratch, what would the premise be and who would you cast?
I have always loved sitcoms, so that's the genre right there. And since the single-cam sitcom is in dire straits right now, that's what I'd go for.
I like workplace comedies and the idea of "made" families, and I was a bit of a Red Dwarf fan in my youth, so the setting would be SPACE. Think SGA but with more laughs. ;)
Casting is definitely the hardest part. Jane Krakowski should definitely be there, because that woman is a comedic genius. As is Andre Braugher, so he's in too. As for the rest, I'd have to do some real thinking about it. I mean, we've got people like Alec Baldwin, who're hilarious but also big assholes, and as the show runner I'd have to ask myself if it would be worth dealing with his bullshit.
For December 28, elderwitty asked about my favourite movie that I can't convince people to watch.
IRL I rarely try to convince people to watch movies I like any more. I'm sort of resigned to the fact that everyone in my family automatically assume that I'd only rec incredibly esoteric stuff. I still remember how shocked my dad was when he realized that Hot Fuzz was *gasp* funny.
I do wish more people on my flist would give some of my Swedish favourites a chance though. Especially Tillsammans, because it's one of my favourite movies. I understand that it might be difficult to get your hands on for foreigners though.
It's such a warm and uplifting movie, and I remember just sitting there, being filled with joy when I watched it in the cinema years ago.
December 24, one day late. For starbuckssue, who asked for an unusual present Rodney would buy John.
I feel like Rodney is the type to go for weird, ostensibly useful, gadgets. Preferably home-made, because he's not one to admit that there are other geniuses at work than his own, but I'd could see him pick up some terrible golf-related gadget for John on Earth. Or maybe he'd construct a golf ball/boomerang hybrid, so John wouldn't have to waste so many balls. ;)
19th Dec: tielan: Pick a relationship (friendship, romantic, frenemies, enemies) in a fandom you've been in and tell me about the dynamics in it and why you like it.
In honour of the last Hobbit movie coming out, let's talk Middle Earth! Lord of the Rings have a lot of fascinating relationships, of all the varieties tielan lists.
I think the one relationship that always tugged on my heart-strings the most was that between Frodo and Sam. The love they feel for each other is really quite beautiful. The movies did a really good job with toning down the unfortunate feudal undertones that date their friendship in the novels, but that's not to say that the original wasn't beautiful as well (it's just a lot more beautiful in the movies). I honestly don't think I'll ever know devotion like it.
One of my favourite parts is right at the end, when the hobbits have returned to the Shire. Merry and Pippin were both in exotic livery, and mysteriously taller than when they left, and they kicked the asses of Saruman's cronies. Sam, meanwhile, made the Shire bloom again with his gift from Galadriel. The end result is that Merry, Pippin and Sam are hailed as heroes and Frodo is mostly ignored, and Sam is SO ANGRY about it, because he was there during the quest, watching Frodo fade away as the burden of the ring weighted him down, and these idiot hobbits don't even realize that Frodo is the true hero (making the hobbits of the Shire stand-ins for a lot of the movie goers, really! Sam would not approve of anyone besmirching Frodo's sacrifice).
For December 17, lilly_the_kid asked for the A-Team, tv or movie or both.
I have a huge soft spot for the original A-Team still, because it was something I used to watch a lot as a child. But, it was a long time ago, so my memories of the show are kind of fuzzy. I do remember that B.A. was my favourite though, and that I didn't like that the others would lie to him and drug him.
The movie I have no nostalgia for, but I love it all the same. It's a big dumb action flick, but it's not like that is a bad thing. *g* I mean, hot guys and explosions; what more could a girl ask for?
As I said, my memories of the tv series are kind of fuzzy, but I do know I ended up feeling a lot more fondness for the big screen versions of Face and Hannibal than their TV dittos. They both came across as a lot less condescending and smarmy. Also, on a shallow note, while TV!Hannibal feels like someone's grandpa, movie!Hannibal is a hottie.
B.A. is a lot ... softer in the movie. Not in a bad way, mind you; he just comes across as a lot less prickly than Mr. T's version. Murdock is pretty much the same, which isn't surprising considering that Sharlto Copley is a massive A-Team fanboy.
I know the movie wasn't very popular with either audiences or critics, but I think it has a worse rep than it deserves, and I do wish it had become a franchise the way the creators clearly intended. Just imagine the fic!
It's December 14, and melagan requested a post about socks.
So, uh, this is my sock drawer.
Once every blue moon I organize it, but it quickly reverts back to its natural state, which is this mess. I've got some wooly socks, knitted by my mom, which I mostly use as travel-slippers. The vast majority of my socks are of the colorful cotton variety though. They used to be predominantly black and white, but I got sick of always getting them mixed up with other people's laundry, so three years ago I started buying nothing but colorful socks.
This is today's sock:
As you can see, it's worn with some classy navy sweatpants and black sheep-skin slippers. Stylin'.
For December 12, outsideth3box asked what my favourite Dr. Seuss book/movie was.
I do have a favourite, but before I'm pelted with rocks for saying what it is, I just need to preface this by pointing out that I'm Swedish.
Dr. Seuss isn't really a thing here. I'm sure one could find the books buried deep down in the childrens' section of the library, but, generally speaking, his books is not something we grow up with. Not the cartoons either. Prior to the Grinch movie with Jim Carrey, everything I knew about Dr. Seuss, I'd learned from pop-cultural references in other media. In some cases, it took watching that movie to get that those even were references.
So, that being said, my favourite Dr. Seuss product is How the Grinch Stole Christmas starring Jim Carrey. I know that a lot of Americans think that it retroactively ruined their childhood by being made, but I didn't have a connection with Dr. Seuss prior to seeing it, so for me it was just a fairly entertaining children's movie.
For December 8, wings128 wanted me to talk about a book that will always and forever be one of my favourites.
For me, my love for specific books is often tied to certain periods in my life. When I was a teenager, I read the Lord of the Rings trilogy at least once a year, and all Agatha Christie mysteries the library had to offer every summer. Now I revisit those books more rarely.
The book I have most reliably returned to ever since I first read it is probably Pride and Prejudice. I'm a big Jane Austen fan in general, but P&P is just such a delight. I usually get a hankering to read it and watch the 1995 mini-series every spring.
Mr. Darcy is not actually my favourite Austen hero (I'm not sure who is - Colonel Brandon? Captain Wentworth? Mr. Knightley? - they're all fine specimens of manhood!), but Elizabeth and him are definitely my favourite Austen couple.
I know exactly how the story will end, and all the twists and turns it takes along the way, but it's the characters I return for. That, and the humor. Jane Austen was an incredibly sharp and witty observer of human nature, and while life today for a single woman of no great fortune is very different from what it was 200 years ago, Austen's characters and their concerns still ring true.
