Fort Rigwald (Japanese: リグバルド要塞 Fort Rigwald) is the ninth chapter of Ephraim's route in Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones.

Plot

Main article: Fort Rigwald/Script

Emperor Vigarde relays new orders to his generals in Grado Keep. Vigarde sends Glen to capture Eirika and Valter to Ephraim; Caellach to destroy the Sacred Stone of Jehanna and Riev to destroy Rausten's stone; and Duessel to fight Ephraim and Frelia. Duessel asks Vigarde for his plans are for Renais, but Vigarde says to leave them. Vigarde instructs Selena to await further orders in the capital. As Vigarde and Lyon exit the throne room, Duessel confronts them again. Duessel asks what the purpose of the war is, and accuses Vigarde of instigating murder; Vigarde does not answer him, instead repeating Duessel's orders to fight the Frelian army.

At Fort Rigwald, a soldier brings Tana before Gheb, having captured her near the fort. Gheb has her put in a cell for a "thorough interrogation" later. Outside Fort Rigwald, Ephraim and Seth assess their ability to take it. Seth purports that the fort has never been taken, but Ephraim believes that the close relationship between Renais and Grado may render the soldiers' morale low; he believes if they can seize the throne, the soldiers will surrender.

As Ephraim's army approaches Fort Rigwald, one of the soldiers reports to Gheb; when one of the soldiers expressed discontent fighting Renais, Gheb berates him; Amelia stands up to Gheb, but Gheb intends to punish her insolence—he is interrupted by Ephraim's approach, and orders his soldiers to fight and die to protect him.

During the battle, Ephraim or Franz can talk to Amelia. Ephraim or Franz are concerned at how young Amelia is, and ask her to surrender; Amelia initially refuses, believing Ephraim to use female prisoners as slaves, but she is convinced to join by seeing Ephraim in person or by hearing Franz's account of him. Additionally, Ephraim can talk to Tana on the battlefield. Tana explains that she was captured trying to find him; Ephraim suggests that she return to Frelia, but Tana refuses, as she traveled to help him and has been worried.

After the battle, Ephraim questions one of the soldiers. Ephraim asks why the war started, but the soldier does not know. Ephraim instead asks about Duessel's whereabouts; the soldier answers that Duessel is in the capital, but that his outspoken opposition to the war has people questioning his loyalty. Ephraim finally asks about Lyon; the soldier states that, according to rumor, it was Lyon who convinced Vigarde to start the war—Ephraim is incensed, and cannot believe that Lyon, whom he knew to be peaceful, could start such a war.

Ephraim tells Seth they will leave the fort in Frelia's hands. Seth is concerned about Ephraim's idea of talking with Duessel or Lyon, but Ephraim assures him that he will fight to win if need be. Seth apologizes, stating that he is concerned with the future of Renais. Later, Ephraim asks Myrrh to return to Frelia, as they will head deeper into Grado where he will be less able to protect her. Myrrh refuses, as she can feel her dragonstone in Grado and feels she must investigate and curtail the dark energy emanating from there.

At Grado, Vigarde orders Selena to follow Duessel with a battalion; he orders her to execute Duessel as a traitor. Selena struggles to believe Duessel would betray Grado, and confronts Vigarde about his intentions—she relays his words from when she was instated as a general, that she is to "protect [their] citizens [...] not to threaten [their] neighbors". Vigarde ignores her, telling her to leave; Selena prepares herself to leave and execute Duessel.

Strategy

This section details unofficial strategies that may help with completion of the chapter. This may not work for everybody.

Before entering the chapter, consider buying a Restore staff on the world map as this is the first chapter to feature an enemy with a status inducing staff. While not especially cheap, staff experience is based on staff cost. Otherwise the target of the Priests with the sleep staff can be manipulated by changing deployment order (the AI prefers to target characters at the bottom of the unit list), and it is ultimately only an nuisance due to the chapter's lack of pressure to move forward: There are no "timed" objectives on this chapter, not even a Thief, and all reinforcements are triggered by player action, not turn count. There is thus no actual incentive to move quickly, and enemies can safely baited out of position until it is safe to advance.

Once play begins, make sure not to move Tana, or she will be attacked. There is no need to unlock her door or break the wall, as the map begins with her recruited. Hugging the left side of the area after the main gate is safer than the right, as as it has fewer enemies, though the Archer with a Longbow (and a Red Gem that needs to be stolen) on the right can hit from either side. Since the Mages in the same area will not move if they can't attack, the spaces three to the left of them will be safe from the longbow if the Mages aren't otherwise provoked. The rest of the map simply involves taking on the great amount of units. Entering the top corridor triggers reinforcements, and a three turn wave of them on Difficult mode, but these are all easily chokepointed if you know they're coming.

The easiest way to recruit Amelia is to exploit her lower movement range than the units around her, allowing them to be drawn out and killed before she is in range of your units. Once their stats staffs are expended, the defanged priests are easy experience for weak units such as Tana, Amelia, or Colm to slowly chip away at.

Gheb is a strange boss, as he has no 2 range weapon despite being stationary and far enough into the game the player will ample ranged options. It's thus trivial to defeat him with a combination of 2 range attacks and using Rescue to remove 1 range attackers before he can retaliate. Not giving him a chance to retaliate will net the player his Killer Axe.
