Eugene comes from a prestigious noble family. He is Hanya's childhood friend, and serves her as knight, joining the Monster Watch alongside her. In order to secure Hanya's inheritance to the throne of Notia, he conspires together with Perenna in order to assassinate Rusty, the only surviving heir of Notia's previous rightful royal family. He also has an arrangement with Perenna for her to assassinate the other members of Notia's family in line for the throne.[1]

Perenna tasks him with protecting Rusty until he retrieves the Sovereign Axe from the Labyrinth, at which point he is to retreat and let Perenna kill Rusty. However, this plan goes awry when Hanya invites herself into the mission made to trap Rusty. Due to the interference of Hanya and Ananke, a member of the Monster Watch, Eugene and Perenna are ultimately unable to kill Rusty, forcing Perenna to reveal herself to the group inside the Labyrinth.

Personality

Eugene is deeply loyal to Hanya, owing to how she and her mother treated him well,[2] and desires to secure the throne for her at all costs. He sees himself as no more than a tool for earning Hanya's confidence.[3] However, he does not inform Hanya of the plans he is involved with, and appears distressed when Hanya unknowingly acts against them. He does not share her desire to simply do good for the people, even if it means ceding the Sovereign Axe to the previous royal family's heir, and instead plots to kill Rusty for Hanya's success, even if this would potentially doom the people of Notia to the invasion of the shadow monsters.

Eugene is also described as arrogant.[4] He looks down on commoners, regarding them as beneath him and lacking in common sense.[5][6] He shoots down Rusty's belief that Eugene became a knight through martial prowess, saying that true power comes from a noble's house and the influence they wield.[7] Eugene refuses to mix with his classmates at the academy since they are commoners.[8] He is dismissive of how that may appear to them since only Hanya's opinion of him matters.[9] He is also unfriendly towards the nobles who only leverage their privilege without a care for duty or honor and it fills him with despair that Notia's future lies with the "ignoble and pampered". [10]

Eugene's family treated him as a pawn and as such, they mean nothing nothing to him. He doesn't care if they are punished for him having members of the royal family killed. Indeed, were his family try to hinder Hanya's bid for the throne, he wouldn't hesitate to have them assassinated as well.[2]

Trivia

  • The coloration of Eugene's fur as well as the shape of his head in shadow form closely match that of the Dobermann Pinscher dog breed; these dogs were typically used as guard or police dogs, matching Eugene's occupation as knight. Additionally, his ears appear to be cropped.
