| For the Synth prototype child, see Shaun (synth). |
Shaun or Father is the son of the Sole Survivor and the leader of the Institute in Fallout 4. He also appears as a character in Fallout Shelter Online.
Background[edit]
Shaun was less than a year old when the Great War took place.[2] His parents fled with him to nearby Vault 111, surviving the bombing. Shaun and his parents were frozen in cryogenic suspended animation inside a Cryogenic Pod as part of the vault's experiment.
An organization known as the Institute developed after the war, and its scientists sought unmutated DNA for their synthetic human project. They discovered records of the vault and attempted to acquire the DNA from the cryogenically frozen inhabitants of the vault. Institute mercenary Kellogg kidnapped Shaun, murdered one of his parents, and left the other alive as the "backup," refreezing them before leaving with the baby. His DNA was successfully utilized by the project.
Shaun was subsequently raised by the organization and later in life, became their leader, known as "Father." Curious about his surviving parent, he released the Sole Survivor from the Cryogenic Pod to see what choices they would make. If one chooses to oppose the Institute, the Sole Survivor has the opportunity to meet with Shaun one last time when they infiltrate the location. Shaun, now elderly with terminal cancer, will express his disappointment in his parent's decisions and viewpoints, stating that it is "delusional" to consider Synths sentient.[3][4] A series of Charisma checks result in Shaun relaying access codes to disable some of the hostile Synths. Shaun had the young Synth boy reprogrammed to believe that the player character is his parent, and records a message to the Sole Survivor that states, "I would ask only that you give him a chance. A chance to be a part of whatever future awaits the Commonwealth."[5]

Notes[edit]
- Shaun's crib mobile plays the Baby Steps theme from Fallout 3.
- Shaun's appearance changes based on Nate and Nora's appearance, similar to how James' appearance changes depending on the Lone Wanderer's race in Fallout 3.
- Dialogue between the Sole Survivor and their spouse reveals that Shaun was conceived at a park.[6]
- If the Institute ending is chosen, a grave marker will be seen in the Institute's main room in front of the Robotics section. The Sole Survivor will then say "Goodbye Shaun" if interacted with.
- If Shaun is killed by the player, the faction becomes permanently hostile. Shaun can be injured without him turning hostile.
- Shaun will not survive any of the four endings regardless of the choices made.
- If the player character attempts to carry Shaun's remains, the message "the item is too heavy to carry" appears until all objects are removed from his inventory.
Quotes[edit]
- "You've seen the Commonwealth. You must have some idea of how this world works. You're either with us, or you're not. I'm afraid it's that simple."

- "I'm glad you can appreciate what we've accomplished. None of it has been easy."

- "While I am not overly fond of putting my own father in harm's way, he has proven more than capable of handling himself."

- "The Institute cannot survive without leadership. The Directorate must continue to govern with the best interests of all in mind. To that end, I am naming my father/mother as my successor."

- "I want you to know that I'm grateful for the time we've had. Thank you, father/mother. You've helped a boy achieve his dreams."
