1. They got the AC fixed at work! The guy was already working on it when I got there and he seemed to get it fixed pretty quickly. Everyone else in the office was very excited about it not being so hot, too.

2. I finished up the second of the Star Wars movie poster puzzles.

These really are fun little puzzles, though I will be glad to move on to something a bit more challenging once these are done.

3. Carla arrived safe and sound in Wisconsin this afternoon. Unfortunately the AC was not working well on the train, which is not what you want for an almost two day journey during the height of summer, but at least it wasn't fully off, just spotty in the rooms while still being nice and cool in the hallway. And now she's in the hot, muggy midwest, but at least her aunt and uncle's house has AC.

4. There is a new yuzu green tea from my favorite bottled green tea brand (Itoen's Oi Ocha series) and it's on sale at work through today. I only noticed it today at lunch when I bought a bottle for myself, so I bought a case (12 bottles) before I went home, so I could have them to bring for lunch. When I just buy a drink here or there I don't always use my employee discount as I always use the self-checkout and don't always have my badge with me to scan, but if I make a larger purchase I always make sure to, so I got the employee discount (which is only 10% but better than nothing) plus the sale price.

5. Jasper loves hanging out on this box in my closet lately. If I can't find him, this is always the first place I look!

Spotlight on Open Doors

The Mass Effect Kink Meme a prompt meme for the Mass Effect games, is being imported to the Archive of Our Own (AO3).

In this post:

Background explanation

The archive is being imported to AO3 to preserve the works and make them available to a wider audience.

The purpose of the Open Doors Committee’s Online Archive Rescue Project is to assist moderators of archives to incorporate the fanworks from those archives into the Archive of Our Own. Open Doors works with moderators to import their archives when the moderators lack the funds, time, or other resources to continue to maintain their archives independently. It is extremely important to Open Doors that we work in collaboration with moderators who want to import their archives and that we fully credit creators, giving them as much control as possible over their fanworks. Open Doors will be working with Liara!Mod to import The Mass Effect Kink Meme into a separate, searchable collection on the Archive of Our Own.

We will begin importing works from The Mass Effect Kink Meme to AO3 no sooner than August 2026. However, the import may not take place for several months or even years, depending on the size and complexity of the archive. Creators are always welcome to import their own works and add them to the collection in the meantime.

What does this mean for creators who have work on The Mass Effect Kink Meme?

Most fanwork fills on The Mass Effect Kink Meme were posted anonymously. All the anonymous fills will be imported to AO3 using the collection's archivist account. If the creator of a fill chose not to post anonymously, however, and if they have an email address listed on their Dreamwidth or LiveJournal profile, we will send an import notification to that email address.

We'll do our best to check for an existing copy of any works before importing. If we find a copy already on AO3, we will invite it to the collection instead of importing it. All fanworks archived on behalf of a self-identified creator will include their name in the byline or the summary of the work.

All imported works will be set to be viewable only by logged-in AO3 users. If you claim your works, you can make them publicly-viewable if you choose. After 30 days, all unclaimed imported works will be made visible to all visitors.

Please contact Open Doors with your LiveJournal or Dreamwidth pseud(s) and email address(es), if:

  • You'd like us to import your works, but you need the notification sent to a different email address than you used on the original archive.
  • You already have an AO3 account and have imported your works already yourself.
  • You’d like to import your works yourself (including if you don’t have an AO3 account yet).
  • You would NOT like your works moved to AO3, or would NOT like your works added to the archive collection.
  • You are happy for us to preserve your works on AO3, but would like us to remove your name.
  • You have any other questions we can help you with.

Please include the name of the archive in the subject heading of your email. If you no longer have access to the email account associated with your LiveJournal or Dreamwidth account, please contact Open Doors and we'll help you out. (If you've posted the works elsewhere, or have an easy way to verify that they're yours, that's great; if not, we will work with the Mass Effect Kink Meme mods to confirm your claims.)

Please see the Open Doors Website for instructions on:

If you still have questions...

If you have further questions, visit the Open Doors FAQ, or contact the Open Doors committee.

We'd also love it if fans could help us preserve the story of The Mass Effect Kink Meme on Fanlore. If you're new to wiki editing, no worries! Check out the new visitor portal, or ask the Fanlore Gardeners for tips.

We're excited to be able to help preserve The Mass Effect Kink Meme!

Creating a GIF or a collage

I wrote about the different effects of creating a GIF (moving image) or a collage (compilation of multiple images into one static image out of frames from the same scene, which I thought might interest other photo editors. While writing it, I came across the Fanlore entry on the picspam that likens picspams to fanart. It's a first for me to see picspams described that way!

The balcony

Wax's vacation has started. And we finally put a floor in the balcony (after two years) because we had to in order for her brother to come direct/help us in building a catio on it (her birthday present). The catio is there now, but we have not painted the metal frame of the balcony with rustproof primer as intended. We haven't put slats under the railing, either, so you can just duck under it out onto the porch roof. Not childproof, but it's not urgent.

We haven't done anything about the disintegrating outer door, either, but we do have enough leftover lumber to make sawhorses. It's been cold and rainy since the weekend, and that might continue all this week, I guess. Wax has another 2 weeks of work after this week before the second half of her vacation.

We also need to clean the fridge. We've been putting that off for way too long and frankly I just want to nuke it from orbit. We can't afford a new fridge, though, and it still does work. No special powers of motivation or iron stomach have descended to inspire us to take on that task.

We have baked focaccia twice, though.

Missing focus today. Finished The Lamb Will Slaughter the Lion, started at the beginning of June. Moving on to Passing Strange in a Tor Pride collection of novellas.

Spent work trying to harvest test cases from live logs. AWS is the stumbling block, but working around it with time.

Watched some Ghost Files to see observe how someone reacts when scared of ghosts.

1. My stomach felt almost as bad this morning when I woke up, but once I got going, I started to feel a lot better, and it wasn't like yesterday where I'd feel better for a while but then anything I ate would make me feel worse again. Not quite 100% but mostly back to normal.

2. There was another ant invasion this morning, though not nearly as bad as yesterday. I was worried that despite my precautions and clean up this morning, I might come home to more after work, since yesterday we had both been home during the day to monitor any scouts and keep things from snowballing, but with Carla out of town, there's no one to keep an eye out during the day. But the diatomaceous earth I put down this morning seems to have been enough and there were no ants in the kitchen this evening and only a couple in the dining room near where they had been coming in. So hopefully I won't wake up to ants again tomorrow.

3. When I first moved offices last year, the area I was in was the coldest in the whole building, but then they made some change and it was the warmest. It was tolerable for the winter and spring, but it's really bad now and I was just sweltering at my desk this afternoon. I put in a request to the facility maintenance department and they said they will get it looked at ASAP so fingers crossed they can get it to a more reasonable temperature.

4. Look at this sweetie girl.

She's fine, no worries - well, not fine fine, she's at the hospital, but it's nothing to worry about.

Taking the bus back from the hospital always gets me thinking about Hurricane Sandy. They named a corner after those two boys. They'd be in high school now, or even entering college. It's easy to judge their mother - and don't get me wrong, I do judge her, because she made every possible mistake from before the storm even hit, starting with not evacuating - but people do dumb stuff all the time and it usually works out just fine. People don't usually die because they did something stupid, they don't usually lose their kids over it.

It's been rainy too. It's really just a maudlin way to start a week.

But I still think, every time I take that bus from the hospital, that those kids should've gotten to grow up, and instead they didn't even get to go trick-or-treating that year.

The moral of this post, inasmuch as there even is one, is that if your area is under an evacuation order, or ought to be, fucking evacuate. Or if you've decided to shelter in place, shelter in place. Don't try to evacuate after the storm is already upon you. That's how it all goes wrong.

A combination of procrastination and anticipation, I purchased new glasses. The glasses I should've already purchased are the bifocals for my new prescription. I'm trying progressives this time, but I'm stuck without anything good for mid-range. Bad for reading a script while moving. Ahead of the ballgame getting cheap character glasses for the next show. Starting to get a collection of no-frills, kinda ugly backups.

Took a nice long walk after work with Psyche. Didn't take Barklee, who slows us down trying to sniff everything.

Vampire Lestat has another great episode. I love probing Psyche's memories of the series while avoiding spoilers.

Backdated: Urinetown Auditions

(Backdated entry: 2026-02-09. Memories may have frayed...)

Auditions for Urinetown. I'd been thinking about getting back into theater since we moved and I realized there was an established community nearby, but it's taken a long time to find the courage. I had excuses earlier (shows that I didn't know or didn't look interesting, misaligned times for auditions or performances), but I didn't realize how scared I'd been until I was experiencing extreme anxiety in the house getting ready to go. Almost pulled out. Eventually talked myself down and made it to the theater (after frantically searching for my keys).

I went in hoping for Officer Lockstock, or maybe Cladwell, but I was trying to temper my expectations. I didn't know the politics of the theatre, and as well as I might do at the audition, I didn't know what talent might be there, or how much faith would be put into an unknown actor to be reliable. Still, I was pretty sure I could land Tiny Tom in the ensemble. But when I got there, the director was pretty upfront about not having a lot of the regulars available, so I thought I might have a good chance.

I felt like I'd made a good impression reading for Hot-Blades Harry. I did a reading straight (high-energy, barely controlled bloodlust), but got a chance to read a second time and went for something more Peter Lorre creepy, which got a lot of surprised laughs.

Finished the evening with prepared song "Not a Common Man" from American Psycho, which fit range and the theme of the show. I had been naive about the ability to get a karaoke backing track, but I eventually did some Audible hacking to get something passable.

I was asked to prepare "Cop Song" and "Don't Be the Bunny" for a potential callback for next week, which seemed like a good sign.

1. Woke up to a huge ant invasion in the dining room/kitchen this morning, which was not fun to clean up, but they seem to be staying away so far. Fingers crossed!

2. I have been having really bad stomach issues since yesterday afternoon and I am not sure what the original trigger was. In the evening I did have gyoza and the brand was garlickier than the one we usually get, so that definitely aggravated it, but nothing I ate earlier in the day should have affected me like that. D: I have been feeling really bleh all day because of it (and ended up working from home) but it has been a reminder that even with all my stomach issues, it's so much better than it was when I first developed them. I used to feel like this all the time and now it's really rare. I just hope this passes soon. :-/

3. I got Carla packed off on the train to Chicago this evening. She is going to be gone for a couple weeks to visit family.

4. This morning I went to Sidecar for donuts as they have a new summer menu, including one that is only available on Mondays. The Monday only one is a peanut butter filled malasada with raspberry icing. It was really good but not so much that I feel I need to plan a trip specifically on a Monday. I also got one of their other summer ones, a chocolate cake donut with potato chip streusel. The streusel was super good but I wasn't that into the donut itself. Carla got a passionfruit filled one that she was super happy with, so I'm going to try that one at some point for sure.

5. I love this picture so much. The randomly outstretched arm! His grumpy little face!
