ciaan: (books)
Two heist movies I watched recently and quite enjoyed: Mad Money and Dhoom 2.

What I'm reading: The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald*, Ariel by Sylvia Plath, and Trust: the social virtues and the creation of prosperity by Francis Fukuyama.

What I recently finished reading: Spring Snow by Yukio Mishima, Your Royal Hostage by Antonia Fraser, Cordelia's Honor (Shards of Honor/Barrayar) by Lois McMaster Bujold, the Identical series by Lanning, Omiai by toomuchplor, the latest issue of Archaeology magazine, and lots of various other fanfic and articles.

*Apparently everyone else is reading Gatsby too since I just saw it at #2 on the Washington Post bestseller list. What happened was that they showed a preview for the movie when my mother and I went to see Oz the Great and Powerful and I mentioned to her that I still hadn't read the book. Well she told my father and later that day he came into my room with two copies of it and offered to lend it to me. Now my father is a bit of a Fitzgerald fanboy, you see, and the upstairs of the house is the Fitzgerald Suite (they got this plaque from an old B&B that was shutting down; it was actually better in the last house when the Fitzgerald Suite was the tiny bookshelf area at the end of the hallway). Fitzgerald is actually buried about two blocks from the house and my father goes to his grave a lot and brings home the stuff people leave there and he has a whole collection of these offerings in a closet in the basement. Though I think he hasn't been going as often recently and hasn't added anything to the collection in a while once the closet got pretty full. So Papa came in with these two copies of the book and was like, "Your mother says you still haven't read this classic of American literature. Want to borrow it? This copy is off Fitzgerald's grave but Mama said you might be creeped out by that, so here's another copy, too." And I was like, "Okay, I will take the other copy." And now I'm actually reading it. So that my father won't hassle me anymore. It's not quite like I expected. But I'm not done yet so I need to see how it goes. Also, the reason my mother and I went to see the Oz movie is because my grandmother was the biggest Oz fangirl ever so it was like our duty to keep up. Grandma would probably have been horrified by the retconning to be honest. Although then again it was only movie continuity and every true fan knows that sucks anyway and the books are what counts. No lie, the Oz con she took me to when I was 14, one girl in the costume contest was movie Glinda and the whole room sighed in outrage.

Well Psych is supposed to be just a happy fun entertaining show but the last two episodes have made me cry. Sigh.

I'm still watching Doctor Who but I don't really care about it. It's there, whatever, I don't have any thoughts on it.

I watched all of Warehouse 13 in one go last year just in time for it to hit a 6 or 7 month hiatus, so I don't actually know what to think about it starting up again next week. It's sorta like, wait, there's more? Really? Huh. I do want to see more, though.

I have magical timing like that with TV shows, I think. I discovered that the 22 episodes of Switched At Birth I watched last summer were not all of S1, because S1 was 30 episodes, for some insane reason, so I finished that and watched the first 10 eps of S2... just in time for them to go on hiatus. I was like, oh, now I am caught up, when is the next episode? Oh, not for a couple months? Really? Okay.

I guess I'm also sorta watching Bones because my mother has it in the DVR but I care about that way way way even less than Doctor Who.

I've been watching CSI Miami streaming on Netflix as I fall asleep (because I am not doing so well with just dark and silence at night lately) and am now into the final season, S10, and I don't know what I'll do once that ends. HGTV streaming is probably better for sleeping, but still. Although EVERYONE in the world has guested on the CSIs, it is constantly like, oh hey, it's so-and-so. But let me just say that the amount of totally illegal search and seizure and police intimidation and brutality keeps notching up and up.

Just these past few weeks I watched all 3 seasons of Lost Girl. It is indeed very cheesy and a little sexploitational but quite entertaining. And oddly enough all Emmanuelle Vaugier's normally annoying traits (bland listless expressions, voice tone that always sounds fake, asymmetrical eyes and eyebrows) all really actually WORK WELL as the Morrigan. It's like they invented a role where her flaws become strengths. It's kinda miraculous.

Oh, fandom

Possibly the amount of cooing, awwing, and squeeing I do over the words "tube" and "vat" in fic is odd. Or possibly it is totally valid.

I signed up for [community profile] comics_bb. We'll see if I finish anything. Such Shaping Fantasies sadly isn't eligible since I've posted parts of it public already, so I need to decide what else to focus on (and keep going with that anyway). I'm trying to figure out what is most likely to get an artist: Lex/Kon, girl-Kon, or multiple Kons.

I'm also thinking of doing another round of [community profile] sv_remix. Because. It would be fun. If other people would play.

Last week I went to Miami for the BIG GAME between Alabama and Notre Dame, by which we mean, I went to Miami and when I got there discovered that billions of other people were causing traffic and so it took ages to get from the airport to my hotel. I was like, football game? What? Really? Oh, that explains why there seemed to be a lot of football people in the plane (like the guy next to me reading a rules book who may have been a coach). Then I wandered amongst the crowds to find food. They had their game and cleared out shortly thereafter and I was left to spend a few days on the beach. Much swimming was had. I wandered around looking at architecture and parks and memorials and art and the world's least-lit tiny lighthouse. Went to the Wolfsonian FIU to see art deco and art nouveau and the World Erotic Art Museum to see lots of nudity (and some very dubious information on artifacts that I sincerely doubt was anywhere near correct).

Now I'm back at work again but on the plus side there's video footage of a giant squid in its deepwater habitat for the first time ever. Also [personal profile] oxoniensis has opened prompting for the porn battle.

Right before I left I was reading this Charles/Erik college AU fic (where everyone was American and no one had powers) and my main response actually was that it would have been much more in character if it were Clex. I'm certain that if someone did a simple find/replace on the names in this fic and posted it somewhere (not that I ever would do this, it would be wrong, but just bear with me here as a hypothetical), readers would go: "Oh, Lex has hair and an adopted little sister and no one cares about his evil father? Willing to roll with that. And the Kents are Jewish and not from Kansas? Sure, okay, if you say so. And Clark needs to pay for college and so Lex is his sugar daddy and they have sex? Right! And hey, this is a totally acceptable fic that falls absolutely within the bounds of typical fanon characterization!" Which was disconcerting, because it's one thing to find myself thinking that every sentence out of Charles Xavier's mouth could easily have been said by Lex Luthor, but I really should not be thinking that Erik Lehnsherr is acting too much like Clark Kent, you know?

(And in other news, I recently found out what Lehnsherr means. It's like I'm learning German or something.)

I wrote two things for Yuletide.

The Spoiler and the Bat-Girl versus the Mechanical Menaces - Batgirl (DC Comics) - Steph/Cass, G. 1,180 words. An entry from Steph's diary in a steampunk AU. Our heroine is joined by a dashing and mysterious figure while fighting a troop of evil clockwork men. Full of Florid Victoriana. (The recipient mentioned steampunk AU and Jane Austen. I realized after I wrote it that what I was pastiching most was actually probably the girl's diary in To Say Nothing Of The Dog by Connie Willis.)

Rules Of The Hunt - Alien vs. Predator - Alexa Woods, Scar, gen. 276 words. Two beings' thoughts in two moments. (Because I defaulted my recipient got two full stories for two of her prompts that she liked more than what I would have done if I'd been able to finish anything.)

And I got one fic.

each new morning in heaven - by butforthegrace - Archie Comics, Veronica Lodge, teen, 3,650 words. Considering my prompt was all about sleeping around and shenanigans, this is actually a really deep, amazing story about growing up and becoming yourself (and travel). I totally love it. You should go read it.

And one thing I realized while making the prompt and reading the fic... Okay, we all know I love Lex Luthor. And in Primeval: New World my favorite character so far is Ange (with Toby a close second). And I've definitely been thinking of Ange as a Lex type of businesswoman. She's very good at what she does and she's very ruthless in a way but she's also so very human and caring. Toby of course is the scientific genius. And I know this is a type of mine for fictional characters. But then this fic about Veronica and what I said in my prompt details... It made me realize this has been a type of mine for even longer than I had thought.

(And speaking of Canadian Primeval, I was thinking it was going a little slow, and wondering if they had an overarching plot... and then they showed they did! And I am totally looking forward to it! Even if I'm not really into the shipping and no one is Helen Cutter yet. (Speaking of my types. Or like I said, how I quite enjoyed all of S1 of Warehouse 13, and then they introduced HG, and it was, OH THIS THING GOES UP TO ELEVEN.))

ciaan: (kiss like a collision)
I was watching some Clex vids yesterday and at once point I was like, "oh, yeah, it's that same scene of Lex and Clark kissing that everyone uses, again." Then I stopped myself and thought, no, wait, it's Lex and Desiree. It's just that everyone does use that clip in everything to be Lex and Clark (and thank you, Smallville, for giving Lex such a consistent type, and using such a nice angle and close-up in that shot). And it's like, if you're making a Clex vid, and you want to indicate Lex and Clark kissing, bam, use that clip after a scene of them staring at each other or hugging, and problem solved.

Except maybe that easy solution has cut down on some creativity?

Because I then remembered a Wincest vid that came out pretty early in the fandom, and I no longer remember what it was called or who it was by, but you know the one. With the kissing vid manip of Sam and Dean, footage of Sam kissing someone and Dean kissing someone melded together so it's them kissing each other.

And I can't think of any Clex vid manips like that. There are loads of image manips that do the same thing, but any vid ones? (Of course now I have the feeling someone is going to point to one, and I'll be like, duh, I've watched that vid a million times, how could I forget it.) But if there aren't, anyone wanna take a crack at it?

Around Town

Local billionaire businessman Lex Luthor was spotted at the upscale restaurant Le Rêve Épicurien dining in the company of a teenage boy whom he introduced to the maitre d' as his son. Twice divorced with no heir this comes as quite a shock, though maybe it shouldn't given the number of women this famous playboy has been seen with around town, especially if you go back about fifteen or sixteen years in the Lifestyle section of this paper. No details have been forthcoming, but if you want to date Metropolis's most eligible bachelor, ladies and gentlemen, from now on you might need to be prepared to be a step-parent.

...I really think they were not ready for slash fandom. :/

First, they made the mistake of allowing unlimited voting in the poll. Very foolish move.

Next, they made the mistake of putting pairings from the same fandom up against each other in round one. Invitation to major ship wars, go go go!

Then, when people started using bots, they put a once-per-hour-per-IP voting limit on only one bracket. Accusations of bias began. Finally they put the vote limit on all other brackets, but closed voting on that single bracket. Cue even more accusations of bias.

And the tourney has received way more comments than most of their posts seem to get. Many of them very wanky.

Slash polls: Not something to be posted lightly by the unprepared.

The femslash poll on the other hand, not getting even a quarter of the votes, comments, wank, etc....

Go vote for Clex! They're on page 3. They're currently at 49.9% and they deserve to win! Stuff of legends! Destiny! They have a son together! Vote until Friday midnight.

This Saturday, May 5, is Free Comic Book Day. Everyone should attend and get some comics for me, since I have to miss it and two different people's birthday parties to do filming for the 48 Hour Film Project (yay!). Which means that info about our screening will be coming up shortly.

Also this month I've been reccing Smallville fic in [livejournal.com profile] crack_van. SV used to be a regular fandom over there but was retired in 2009, so I signed up to do it as a small fandom. No one has done that in the intervening period, and thus I think other people should go do it in future so we continue to have SV recs there.

Also remember when I talked about being into the idea of Lex/Kon? Well, I FOUND SOME. (Actually [personal profile] sansets found it for me because she is cool like that.) Someone else wrote it (!!!) and I read it and really liked it.

I really ought to update on my life and explain why I haven't been around, but this week I'm very busy prepping for the 48HFP and my German final exam. (Hint: Ich habe kein Zeit, weil ich Deutsch lerne. Ich lerne gar nicht gern Deutsch, weil es mich kein Zeit haben macht. Et l'Allemand est plus dificile que le Français. Also I realize there are a load of errors have I mentioned that I am not getting the hang of this whole German thing argggghhhhhh leave me comments in German so I can practice augh.)

Happy 2012 everyone! I actually wrote a lot of fic, comparatively, in December, and fulfilled multiple writing requirements I had signed up for. I wrote three fics for [community profile] yuletide, that's three count 'em 3, the first time I've ever written more than one fic for Yuletide. And I did a [community profile] kink_bingo mini-challenge. And I wrote something for [community profile] clexmas. And we had Yuletide write-ins which were really fun and helpful!

Now I've signed up for [livejournal.com profile] recast_bigbang, which still needs more artists to sign up, so artists! Who want to do art for a recast/fusion/crossover Big Bang! You should sign up! I'm going to write a fic with the X-Men: First Class characters translated onto Darkover. You're looking at me like I'm crazy, but it actually works perfectly. The Ages of Chaos, when many new forms of laran were developing, pre-Compact, chieri, and two words: Charles Alton. Also, bredu and breda are still apparently pretty much the most romantic terms I can think of.

Um. Anyhow. Back to Yuletide.

Stories for me

Postcards by Leyenn - Bring It On, Torrance/Isis, worksafe, 1,708 words. I have been wanting this pairing for ages and not been able to find any of it, and this is a beautiful little story that gets them together nicely!

Reemergence by Taelle - Miss Pym Disposes by Josephine Tey, Mary Innes and Beau Nash, worksafe, 4,514 words. Technically this was written for [personal profile] kinetikatrue, but whatever, it was basically one of my other requests. So so so good and true as a sequel to the novel, I cried, it is gorgeous.

Stories by me

Mayhem At The Mall - Sky High, Layla, Magenta, Warren, gen. A Christmas shopping trip takes a slight turn for the worse. 2,177 words.

Reunion - Sky High, Layla/Warren, worksafe. A Homecoming dance, five years after graduating from high school. 766 words.

Experiments In Intelligence - Octopus Steals My Video Camera And Swims Off With It While It's Recording, gen. Three Quick Flickers And All Arms Waving is young, but she is not reckless, nor is she a coward, either. She is an observer of humans. She experiments with them because she wants to solve the ancient, controversial question of whether the humans are intelligent. 1,017 words. (This story has been amazingly popular, considering that if I had posted it at any other time of the year I would have been hard-pressed to get even three readers. Instead it's in the top 40 Yuletide fics in terms of hits and has an unbelievable over 1/5, almost 1/4, of those hits translating to actual positive feedback. I am happily boggled.)

Tomorrow morning I fly off to Puerto Rico, see you when I get back!

Waaaaay back in the day I started answering the 20 Days Of Vids meme questions, and then didn't come anywhere near finishing them. I am now going to resume answering those! You can find my previous answers under the vidding tag.

Day 8 - A vid you had to watch multiple times to understand

I can't actually think of any vids that I didn't feel I got until I'd watched them multiple times (though there's always more to find every time you rewatch something), so instead I'm listing a vid that I've watched multiple times and still don't get.

Us by [livejournal.com profile] lim (multifandom)

When this vid was first posted it was an instant and major hit. I watched it after seeing about a dozen recs in a row on my friendspage. All of them said this vid is so happy! and joyful! and full of squee! such a wonderful celebration of how fandom is awesome! and creative! and squee! And yes, I can understand the argument the vid is making. It's really well edited, with amazing effects, very pretty and very creative and very smart and all that. But dude, this vid feels so sad and claustrophobic and depressing to me.

Mostly it's the song, which I had never heard before I saw this vid. The singer's voice just seems pained and sad, and it's full of violins, which are always tragic. But it's also kinda the scratchy greyness of the visual effects. This vid just makes me feel like it's about a world where things suck really bad and no matter how hard you try to escape to somewhere better you just can't get out. And I'm willing to admit I'm in the wrong if 99% of people think it's a joyful celebration, but I still can't feel that. And I've tried. I've watched this vid multiple times. I've watched it with no sound to see if that made a difference. I've watched it at cons and discussed it with people. I've read analyses of it. I've read the vidder's own discussion of making the vid. Nothing changes it.

So yeah, joyful celebration, I still do not feel it, I do not hear it, I just don't get it. :(

Day 9 - A vid that makes you cry

Now after talking about a vid that makes me sad in a bad way, I'll talk about some that make me sad in a good way. Ones that make me cry and I love them for that.

Pet by [livejournal.com profile] linzeestyle - Smallville, Lex, Lionel, Clark/Lex. Lionel is an evil, evil father. Augh, this vid has gone offline since last time I checked! Come to my house and I will play it for you! (\o/ Now it's back!)

Emmanuel by [livejournal.com profile] sockkpuppett - Smallville, Lex, Clark/Lex. Lex worships Clark, and Clark fails to save him. And sadly this vid is not online anymore either! Come to my house and I will play it for you! But don't be like [personal profile] sansets who kicked me in the shin for making her cry with these two vids AFTER I TOLD HER THEY WOULD MAKE HER CRY.

Big City Life by [livejournal.com profile] halcyon_shift - Dark Angel, Max, ensemble. Summary of transgenic struggles. I'm not even sure why this one makes me cry every time, because it's hopeful too, it just always does.

And because so many of those were offline (whhhyyy???) a bonus.

Counting Bodies by [livejournal.com profile] millylicious - Angel The Series, Angel, Connor, Darla, bit of Cordelia. This is actually to a different remix of the same song as Pet, and the two versions of the song as well as the different characters and editing styles contribute to two different feels for the vids despite the same themes. Which is really fascinating and there could be a great vid show of vids that use the same song differently.
