I wrote two things for Yuletide.

The Spoiler and the Bat-Girl versus the Mechanical Menaces - Batgirl (DC Comics) - Steph/Cass, G. 1,180 words. An entry from Steph's diary in a steampunk AU. Our heroine is joined by a dashing and mysterious figure while fighting a troop of evil clockwork men. Full of Florid Victoriana. (The recipient mentioned steampunk AU and Jane Austen. I realized after I wrote it that what I was pastiching most was actually probably the girl's diary in To Say Nothing Of The Dog by Connie Willis.)

Rules Of The Hunt - Alien vs. Predator - Alexa Woods, Scar, gen. 276 words. Two beings' thoughts in two moments. (Because I defaulted my recipient got two full stories for two of her prompts that she liked more than what I would have done if I'd been able to finish anything.)

And I got one fic.

each new morning in heaven - by butforthegrace - Archie Comics, Veronica Lodge, teen, 3,650 words. Considering my prompt was all about sleeping around and shenanigans, this is actually a really deep, amazing story about growing up and becoming yourself (and travel). I totally love it. You should go read it.

And one thing I realized while making the prompt and reading the fic... Okay, we all know I love Lex Luthor. And in Primeval: New World my favorite character so far is Ange (with Toby a close second). And I've definitely been thinking of Ange as a Lex type of businesswoman. She's very good at what she does and she's very ruthless in a way but she's also so very human and caring. Toby of course is the scientific genius. And I know this is a type of mine for fictional characters. But then this fic about Veronica and what I said in my prompt details... It made me realize this has been a type of mine for even longer than I had thought.

(And speaking of Canadian Primeval, I was thinking it was going a little slow, and wondering if they had an overarching plot... and then they showed they did! And I am totally looking forward to it! Even if I'm not really into the shipping and no one is Helen Cutter yet. (Speaking of my types. Or like I said, how I quite enjoyed all of S1 of Warehouse 13, and then they introduced HG, and it was, OH THIS THING GOES UP TO ELEVEN.))
ciaan: (Yuletide)
General info: Hello, and thank you for offering to write me a fic! I like Yuletide to make me happy. One of my prompts contains some inherent angst, but I generally just request that you write something you enjoy, that is fun and hopefully cheerful at the end to read. A couple of my main squicks/triggers to avoid, please, include killing off my requested characters, amnesia, pregnancy, teacher/student relationships, infidelity, and breakups (unless these are canonical). There are more public posts on my DW than LJ but LJ goes back further into history.

Fandom: Actor RPF
Characters: Sandra McCoy and Nicole Gale Anderson
What you need to read/watch: ten minutes on IMDB and Google images?
Optional details from request: I would especially like an AU, but reality-based is fine, anything where they are friends or lovers or teammates or relatives or archenemies or some combination, and maybe also superheroes or secret agents or space pirates or crimefighting con artists or epic archaeologists or elves or.....
More details: Not many more details to give here. I emphasize the F over the R in RPF, I totally love Sandy immensely, I just want to read the epic adventures of Sandy and Nic, have fun, they're pretty. (Though, please don't mention Jared Padalecki, I have... lingering issues.)

Fandom: Alan Grant Series - Josephine Tey
Characters: Liz Garrowby and Leslie Searle
What you need to read/watch: one novel, To Love And Be Wise
Optional details from request: What does Liz Garrowby think and feel when she learns the truth about Leslie Searle? Or does Leslie Searle ever take Alan Grant up on his invitation? Any missing scenes between them? Or anything else about one or the other or both of them or any other Josephine Tey character would be awesome.
More details: I've made some pretty long posts about why I like these novels in previous Yuletide letters. I received Tad Cullen/Bill Kenrick (OTP) in an earlier year and [personal profile] kinetikatrue got a lovely fic about Mary Innes last year. So this time around I requested these other characters. Seriously, anything about them or any Tey novel is awesome. I am always trying to increase this miniscule fandom. I also think there could be a great compare/contrast between Leslie Searle and Mary Innes.

Fandom: Archie Comics
Characters: Veronica Lodge
What you need to read/watch: at least a few issues of the Veronica's Passport series
Optional details from request: Veronica in... world travel adventures and sleeping around!
More details: You would think that as a geeky little girl I would have preferred Betty. But I actually liked Veronica better. It was all because of the series I thought of as Veronica In... but learned from Wikipedia when I was planning this request was actually called Veronica's Passport. The cover every month said something like Veronica In... Germany! Veronica In... Mexico! Veronica In... Australia! I loved the stories being set all over the world and the reader-submitted clothing designs. Every issue we got to see Veronica go to a new country, flirt with a new boy, and learn about the local history, culture, food, geography, and so on, while frequently solving a crime or being engaged in some hijinks and shenanigans. Looking back on it now as an adult I also appreciate that there was never any slut-shaming about how she had a boy of the month all over the world (sometimes two, like in Greece). So what I'm requesting here is adult Veronica, still traveling the world for business and pleasure, saving the day, and being all self-aware about how she hooks up with loads of guys and that's fine (maybe some girls too if you want). Something like that.

This Saturday, May 5, is Free Comic Book Day. Everyone should attend and get some comics for me, since I have to miss it and two different people's birthday parties to do filming for the 48 Hour Film Project (yay!). Which means that info about our screening will be coming up shortly.

Also this month I've been reccing Smallville fic in [livejournal.com profile] crack_van. SV used to be a regular fandom over there but was retired in 2009, so I signed up to do it as a small fandom. No one has done that in the intervening period, and thus I think other people should go do it in future so we continue to have SV recs there.

Also remember when I talked about being into the idea of Lex/Kon? Well, I FOUND SOME. (Actually [personal profile] sansets found it for me because she is cool like that.) Someone else wrote it (!!!) and I read it and really liked it.

I really ought to update on my life and explain why I haven't been around, but this week I'm very busy prepping for the 48HFP and my German final exam. (Hint: Ich habe kein Zeit, weil ich Deutsch lerne. Ich lerne gar nicht gern Deutsch, weil es mich kein Zeit haben macht. Et l'Allemand est plus dificile que le Français. Also I realize there are a load of errors have I mentioned that I am not getting the hang of this whole German thing argggghhhhhh leave me comments in German so I can practice augh.)
ciaan: (come crashing in)
So my birthday weekend consisted of less fun and productivity than I had wanted and instead way more of being sick and sitting around feeling grumpy and icky. :/

DC Comics Nielsen Survey - If you are a current or former or possible reader of DC Comics, especially if you fall outside their target 18- to 35-year-old straight white male audience, tell 'em what you really think.

And, we all know I like HGTV, right? The Urban Oasis Sweepstakes ends soon.

They also have a new show called House Hunters On Vacation, where the premise is, they take a family to a dream vacation location, show them three fancy houses, and then the family gets to pick which one to stay in for a week while HGTV pays for it. In the episodes so far it seems they are making a point to pick families who can't pay for vacations on their own. So, if you haven't been able to afford a get-away and you want/need one, maybe HGTV will give you a free and lavish one. It can't hurt to apply.

Runaways!

ciaan: (the way of the world)
I started reading it last week and I am really liking it so far! I like the writing, the art, the characters, the little meta jokes, the demographics, the premise, the interrelationships, pretty much everything. I also like that it is clearly set in the Marvel universe but is fairly standalone, as I do not know much about the Marvel universe yet (indeed it feels more like an indie comic that is commenting on the superhero genre than like an actual superhero comic, I mean it feels like a normal real comic to me, not like all this wtf why am I reading superhero stuff I've been feeling (yes, indie comics are normal real comics and superhero comics are a weird outlier to me, a lot of the stuff I'm liking about Runaways (like the kids looking like their parents and the girls having varied body types) I would take for granted in a normal indie comic, and yet I am surprised and impressed by it being the case in something from The Big 2 (holy shit I really have had my standards lowered by reading this stuff for a year, haven't I? *facepalm* (fuck you Dan "we only hire the best" DiDio)))).

I bought the first TPB last week on Thursday evening (because I am actually going to the comic store weekly to pick up some of the new DCnU #1s this month, which is not really the best life choice). I finished it Friday on the bus on my way home from work, and then was really sad that I had to wait a whole week to read more. Which, if you have any idea how dead my sense of suspense is, says a lot. I frequently just stop reading things if I'm interrupted for a while in the middle of them, because my need to know "what happens next" has been mostly killed. Then on Wednesday I went back to the comic store, and this time I bought two TPBs, so that I would have more to read.

So I finished another TPB last night and went to start the next one, and that was when I discovered that I had not bought TPB #2 and TPB #3, as I thought, because apparently in the 8 years the comic has been running it's been renumbered TWICE and is on volume 3 now. Dear Marvel: I really appreciate that the back of the TPB says which issue numbers it collects but it would be super nice if you would indicate that there have been multiple volumes, so that I know (for example) which issue #11 I'm getting! Cue much wailing and gnashing of teeth. The upshot of which is, I had to set aside the other book I bought and now I need to wait a week AGAIN to read more.

Apparently the first volume, 18 issues of it, is all written by Brian K. Vaughan, who I haven't read anything by before, to the best of my recollection, but I am liking his stuff here. And then it is written by some other people later, the other TPB I bought is by a woman I am unfamiliar with, some of it is by Joss Whedon (I hear his run is maybe not as good?) and then some of it is by Terry Moore. I really loved Strangers In Paradise, so I am looking forward to seeing what Terry Moore does here and how he handles pre-established characters.

So, uh, no spoilers please, but I am totally on the bandwagon of the Runaways at the moment. Reading through the DCnU #1s is kinda feeling like a chore now, a lot of it I am just doing so I know for sure, but can it please be Wednesday already so I can get more Runaways?
ciaan: (W! ASH! ING! TON baby! D.C.!)
On Tuesday there was an earthquake. Now, I've felt lots of earthquakes before, but they've never been more than a little shake-shake for a few seconds. This was the first time I ever felt one that went on and on and on and was violently shaking and really really loud and made me imagine three stories of brick building falling on my head. (Or, you know, wonder whether someone had bombed DC.) (Though I am also surprised by the number of people who say they've never felt an earthquake before, given that many of these people have been through some of the same earthquakes I have, like the one we had earlier this year.)

Then on Saturday night we had Hurricane Irene, which actually wasn't that strong a storm around here on the scale of wind and rain storms, but did still put out our electricity for over 24 hours. AND NOT THE COLLEGE'S ELECTRICITY, damn you Pepco, worst of both worlds scenario. Neither the earthquake nor the hurricane got me out of work at all, yet we ditched a bunch of food when the fridge was out.

But between those, on Friday evening, I went to a trapeze show [personal profile] v_greyson was in, and it was so cool. Now I want to try that someday! It was a student show, so it was very much, hey look, normal people doing amazing things! You don't actually have to be a hyper-fit professional to pull it off, though the hyper-fit professional instructors looked awesome (and [personal profile] sansets and I totally discussed how certain comics characters ought to be played by real aerialists in live-action versions).

Now the semester has started, so speaking of which, I can finally go to the gym again! And I am super duper glad that there were no students in here when the earthquake hit, let me tell you that. And now I have read more stuff and have a better idea of what to do if I am ever in a big earthquake again.

Other than that, am going sailing, rereading Josephine Tey, dreading the DCU reboot, and so on as usual.

Celebrating 18 years of Superboy! Kon-El! Conner Kent! The once and future Superman!

18 years of publication history. His name has changed... his costume... his powers... his parentage... his location... his relationships... He's died and come back to life. He's just made his TV debut this season. And through it all, he's still helping people, saving the world, and spreading awesomeness.

So let's throw a party!

[community profile] kon_a_thon: a super epic party of fun, games, fanworks, and love, now through the end of June!
ciaan: (evil bunnies)
Having just watched the latter of these last night, I must say that Minion from Megamind and the minions from Despicable Me should hang out. It would be the cutest thing ever!

Well, possibly still surpassed by the SDs from the Spyboy/Young Justice storyline, which left me flailing and grinning constantly on the bus while reading it. So adorable! Even more adorable because they're trying to kill everyone! Evil chibis!
ciaan: (half-assed)
So, remember this post about how [personal profile] sansets and I were worried that we'd had a fanboy conversation? Yeah, after that we went on at one point to have a long discussion about how it is not actually at all intellectual to discuss who would win in a fight, and also boring besides, and can never be conclusively proved.

Then the other day there was this...

C: *is reading a comic where villains force Tim and Cass to fight each other and are betting on it, with 2:1 odds in Cass's favor* Dude, what, there is a 100% chance that Cass would beat Tim in a fight.
S: Yeah, totally.
C: Tim would have to be, like, hidden in a fortress with remote-controlled lasers or something to have any chance against her.
S: Cass would beat 99.9% of normal humans in a straight-up fight. Only people like Batman and Shiva are real opponents. You need to get into metahumans before there's any doubt of her winning.
C: That one prompt in the kink meme did convince me about Kara's Kryptonian body language and all.
S: Yeah, and heat vision...
*ten or so minutes pass as we discuss who would have a good chance of beating Cass and why*
C: Wait...
S: Uh...
C: DID WE JUST REALLY SPEND THE LAST TEN MINUTES DISCUSSING WHICH SUPERHERO WOULD WIN IN A FIGHT????
S: FUCK, WE DID.
C: FUCK MY LIFE.

The devolution continues, y'all.
ciaan: (Yuletide)
1. For Yuletide I wrote How Horses Came To The Desert, worksafe gen about Diana Wynne Jones' Tough Guide To Fantasyland. I received The Things We Say Are True by be_themoon which is Gwen/Penny from Sky High and is awesome, and an anonymous femslash ficlet based on the song Boys Boys Boys by Lady Gaga. I always get better than I give for Yuletide.

2. I have been reading Cass' run of Batgirl and I would just like to say that Cassandra Cain is made of awesome and amazing and perfection.

3. I have now made up two totally different, totally AU, totally self-indulgent Lex/Kon scenarios because there is something wrong in my head.

4. But of all the characters in the DCU the one who is the mostest embodiment of purity and goodness and wholesomeness and love and nobility and helpfulness and generosity and sweetness and light and stop me now before I really get into hyperbole is Bart Allen. I was trying to graph his thought processes... )

And then I finally realized who his voice most reminds me of. So I decided I should write a scene where they meet.

Title: Bart Meets Delirium
Summary: Worksafe gen and the title says it all. And I probably got Bart's powers all wrong because I don't really understand the speed force as a force/place/thing and I've only just started reading canon and I have no right to write fic for this fandom augh what am I doing.

Bart's running across the Atlantic when he notices the girl walking next to him. )
ciaan: (the bat-birds and the bat-bees)
I'm getting really annoyed at this string of ill-health. First I was sick for A WEEK, which is just unfair. I normally don't get colds/flus/stuff like that much and they don't tend to last more than a day or two, so while I can cope with my chronic things like migraines I get incredibly sulky and upset to be abnormally sick. Then yesterday I did something, maybe "threw out" my back (omg I'm getting old?). I don't even KNOW. It was yesterday morning and I got up to hit the snooze button on the alarm twice (I keep the clock on the other side of the room from my bed so I have to actually stand up and walk over there) and then when I got up the next time to actually turn the alarm off it just HURT. So apparently I hurt myself by sitting up in bed? I don't even. But today it STILL hurts. And all together I haven't been to the gym in two weeks, first on account of not being able to breathe and then on account of not being able to stand. And I took two days off work last week when I was sick but I'm also just going to go home at noon today. Well, go do early voting and then go home and have a hot bath. I haven't had a bath in the new house yet. (I don't find them acceptable for cleanliness purposes and I only rarely do them recreationally.) My boss is out this morning so I had to come in and cover but once he gets back I'm skipping out argh. Because I need to be healthy to party this weekend.

In other news that is not new, I'm making my way through Young Justice and I still can't believe that a) I'm reading DC Comics (after all my years growing up as an indie comics snob and then all my years being in SV fandom and avoiding the superhero parts of it), b) I'm enjoying reading DC Comics, and c) I'm getting pissed off at things they do and instead of just thinking how I should read/write fic instead I keep thinking they should HIRE me because I could do it BETTER. No, seriously, it is the weirdest response. I just want to run an Elseworlds-style anthology comic series for them and make crazy AUs and hire fan artists and writers off the internets. And do better movie versions about the next generation. I think it is possibly because the canon treats itself as fanon? I mean, when the REAL writers are so obviously picking and choosing and making AUs and doing their own fic, why the fuck can't they get BETTER FIC AND ART published? It is like reading in a fandom with no canon, just some major BNFs. It's weeeeiiiirrddd.

Also I want Kon's leather jacket with the S-shield on the back, except not leather obviously, and the design would have to be red and not yellow. Because silver glitter is probably going too far. (Though that one fic did convince me that Adam Lambert and early Kon have the same hair and that Tim is totally Adam's type.) Hmm, or black on black could work. Very Luthoresque. WHY HAS THIS HAPPENED TO MY BRAIN?
ciaan: (not amused)
So I'm reading Young Justice and [personal profile] sansets and I have been having a lot of conversations about the DCU recently, and they mostly go like "OMG, what crack is this even on? They did a what now? It makes no sense!" or "How is [character] so adorable!" or "Someone needs to write that threesome! All the threesomes!" (yesterday's addition to the list: Kon/Cassie/Cissie) or "Bart on Smallville is not Bart! He needs to be BFF with Kon and Tim in the future! Shut your face SV! And Bart is the sweetest and NOT A RAPIST! Shut your face Kyle Gallner!" But the other day we did this:

Me: So speedsters are faster than Superman, right?
S: I think so. I don't know if it's canon, but I think so.
Me: And Superman can turn back time by flying around the Earth really fast.
S: I don't think that's canon anymore.
Me: Whatever, it was canon. So could Bart turn back time by running around the Earth really fast? Or are the superstrength and flying necessary parts of it?
S: Maybe.
Me: ...Wait, are we having a fanboy-type conversation right now?
S: Augh! Nooooo! Uh, um, they're all in love! They're all sleeping together! *flail* Okay, better.
Me: But I still want to know if Bart can turn back time by running really fast!
S: He could punch Wally in the face.
Me: That's why he needs to turn back time! So Wally forgets about it.
S: Someone should write that fic.
Me: There, you fixed it.

Because seriously, normally when I read/watch stuff if I care about it at all I will spend loads of time trying to figure out how it works and how the worldbuilding all fits together and exactly what people could do with their powers and etc. BUT YOU CAN'T EVEN DO THAT WITH THE DCU. Because it's just got too many layers of congealed crud from where they threw everything in and never even TRIED to make it make sense. So there's no point in analyzing it that way really rigorously.

And the fanboys would totally mock OUR conversations... *le sigh* WHATEVER.
ciaan: (notice when you begin to disappear)
The news is that I have rejoined the staff of [community profile] sv_ledger. I felt like I should be doing SOMETHING to contribute to fandom somehow, since I haven't been posting fic, and plus I missed working with the other editors, who are all aces. So I'm on-duty for that right now and getting back into the link-gathering swing of things.

Also and otherwise, after my summer fling with the Adam&Tommy stuff came to a fickle end I, for reasons that I have no idea how it happened, started reading DCU stuff. Various bits of canon as filtered through [community profile] scans_daily and what [personal profile] sansets has in the house, plus fic. I still have a dislike *coughcough* for Superman and Batman, but the next generation entertains me, so I've been checking out Kon/Tim and various versions of hot Robin-on-Robin action (plus assorted Barts and Batgirls and Wunderkinder (needs moar threesomes and foursomes with girls + boys)). This has also involved much household discussion of the WTFness of DCU canon and the need for various types of fic. (I just. I cannot take that universe SERIOUSLY.) Amused myself with imagining Kon ending up in S1 Smallville and going 0_o at it. Then next amused myself by way AUing everything and trying to figure out how Lex/Kon could work (apparently it does not exist anywhere on the internets? wtf?), but lost the plot entirely in id-ficcy HE THINKS LEX IS THE MOST AMAZING PERSON EVER and giving him long hair and a lip ring. This is an important difference between imagining and writing, folks, when you imagine you don't have to make it make sense. (Though from reading fic I realize not everyone makes this distinction, but my thoughts have to reach a certain threshold before I will actually call them a story for the public.)

But what I'm really talking about here is superpowers. Now, from my years of reading in SV I'm used to things having long and elaborate discussions of the possible dangers of Clark's powers during sex, and also some very creative uses of his powers during sex for fun and pleasure. And though I have found more of this now, at first I kept not seeing any of it in DCU fic, and I was boggling at how there were all these superpeople and it was like the writers didn't even notice? So then I wrote this little ficlet that is not, as I said, hardly even reaching the threshold of being anything and plus it's rough and unbetaed and like, ha ha, I am one of those people who wrote a fic without really reading canon.

Title: Lurkers Support Him In Email
Rating/Pairing/Stuff: worksafe gen with references to Tim/Kon and other pairings
Summary: 250 words and did you read my babble above?
Warning: Did you read my babble above?

A mysterious email... )
ciaan: (glare of flaming doom)
1. The Washington Post had an article this morning about the backlog in the copyright office (apparently their new faster system for registering stuff is actually slower) and it was incredibly frustrating, talking about how people were "waiting sixteen months to get their copyrights" and saying things like "you don't need a copyright to publish or perform a work, but registering it provides legal protection and is the only way to keep people from copying your stuff" and I was yelling back like "These people already have copyrights! They aren't waiting to GET them at all!" Argh, fail, Post, fail.

2. There are more and more Big Bangs springing up, and somehow the average wordcount they require has shrunk from the 50,000 it originally was to 15,000 for almost all of the new ones. Since when is 15,000 words a huge long story?

3. Bandom/CW crossover in real life: Leighton Meester doing vocals on Cobra Starship's new single.

4. I was watching Angel the other day and suddenly there was surprise!JDM, playing some guy whose boyfriend had been killed by vampires.

5. I've also been watching reruns of various CSIs and have seen surprise!Lucas Luthor, Emmanuelle Vaugier, Megalyn Echikunwoke, a Ghostfacer, Brendan Fehr, Adrianne Palicki, and Sandra McCoy.

6. I went out last night to watch Star Trek again and then ended up making it a double feature with Wolverine. Because I'm able to do that kind of thing now. Also they gave me a free popcorn. Wolverine was indeed fairly meh: it wasn't a very well-structured story and I didn't think it added very much to the movieverse overall. Mainly it just made me think a) movie-Gambit/movie-Rogue would indeed be hot (hey, they are a classic, I liked them together when I was little (though the other movies have made me appreciate the Rogue/Bobby/John of course)) and b) Lynn Collins taking Taylor Kitsch home to Steven Strait for a little reunion and by "reunion" we mean "hot threeway sex." Because you guys, I learned a few weeks ago that Steven Strait GOT MARRIED last year at AGE 22 (to a woman who is 29, I'm just saying). And she was in the Wolverine movie so of course it was like "hey, honey, someone in my movie is someone you've worked with before." "Oh reeeaaaaallly." And I feel very dirty for thinking this, yes I do, but still. Somehow the pure innocence of Sky High was washed out by the obvious slashiness of The Covenant here.

7. Speaking of feeling dirty, if you had asked me a week ago whether I'd ever be reading porn about Captain Kirk enjoying being dominated and roughed up and choked during sex, I would have said a) totally OOC and b) I don't read fic about those people, oh god my childhood! Fandom, what have you done to my brain, apparently the new Enterprise is a big orgy where everyone is part of a happy team with benefits and especially Kirk, Spock, and Uhura have lots of sex all together. Team with benefits, I just. (YouTube is not cooperating and finding kissing clips for me.)

8. Apparently there is something wrong with me on the internets.

9. Am also trying to hash out a concept for a mainstream sci-fi action blockbuster with a majority female, majority of color cast and a happy queer romance subplot. Because the day I go watch a blockbuster with surprise!homoerotic plotline will be a happy day, and no one else seems to be moving faster on it. Plus, have gone back to working on Gilgamesh, though that has fewer women and no overt gay sex. It does have a more complete plot at the moment, though (so far I am stealing viral aliens).

10. This entry is apparently all about threesomes.
