been listening to the Murderbot diaries recently..i like it a lot

got so deep into project hail mary that the only logical next step is to advance to the murderbot diaries

with all this new info about the show coming out, let's please remember to use "murderbot tv show" or similar for posts about the show, and keep "tmbd" and "the murderbot diaries" for posts about the books so everybody can still find the content they want!!

Booktober: The Murderbot Diaries

For Fanlore’s Booktober, we’re highlighting The Murderbot Diaries, the sci-fi book series written by Martha Wells.

The series follows the adventure of the self-proclaimed ‘’Murderbot’’, a cyborg guard that has secretly gained freewill after hacking and disabling its governor module. With its new-found autonomy, Murderbot explores the galaxy and tries to figure out what it wants to do with its life.

Reflecting Murderbot's distaste for romance, the fandom mostly creates gen fanworks that focus on the friendship between Murderbot and other humans/artificial intelligence beings.

In September 2022, the Murderbot Diaries was still considered a Yuletide fandom, having under 1000 completed works on Ao3. After the release of the TV adaptation in May 2025, the Ao3 tag has been steadily growing and currently has over 4000 works.

Made a few murderbot posts that seem to resonate with the fandom so i got to find out there's a variety of tags

• Murderbot -normal and what I use
• Murderbot Diaries -also normal and provides clarification between the character and the series, which is respectable but i can't be arsed to go to this level of specification because I come from superhero comics
• The Murderbot Diaries -fine. You have more free time on your hands than I do to include the "the"
• TMBD -teenage mutant binja durtles

I learned so much from the Murderbot Diaries fandom over the years. Stuff about capitalism, about other approaches to justice, about amatnormativity, about gender, about infosec, hell, even about coding.

But the most essential thing I learned that I use in my day to day is finally figuring out its vs. it's.

I won't say it's, like, the series' best feature, but on a personally relatable level my favourite thing about The Murderbot Diaries is the repeated implication that most of SecUnit's success as a hacker stems from the fact that it keeps bumping into mission-critical systems where nobody's bothered to change the factory default wi-fi password.

THE MURDERBOT DIARIES: A Fan Animation

In early 2021, as talk of a Murderbot Diaries adaptation was underway, fans of the series started asking each other questions like, "What would we want to see from an adaptation of our favorite book series?" and "Wouldn't it be cool if this or that scene was animated?" and "Hey, don't YOU know some things about animation?" and "What if a bunch of fans got together to make a Murderbot fan animation?"

Two years of teamwork later, the Murderbot Diaries Fanimation Project presents our labor of love: a fully realized animation adapting scenes from the first four novellas into a trailer, dedicated to showcasing everything we love about the story of our favorite rogue SecUnit.
