5. Do you have a smoke and/or carbon monoxide detector in your home?
There’s a smoke detector in all of the apartments here.

6. Today is the beginning of Great British Pea Week in the UK. Do you like eating peas? Have you ever grown them?
I can’t eat them anymore, but I loved having them fresh or in a pea soup. Many years ago I grew them on my balcony garden.

7. It’s the seventh day of the seventh month, and in Japan, it’s the day of the Star Festival (Tanabata). For one day only, wishes, hopes, poetry and dreams are written onto streamers and tied to trees. What would you write on a streamer today?
Didn’t do that on the 7th, but it sounds like a lovely idea.

Yes! She's an amazing artist.

9. It’s World Misophonia Day. A person with this disorder has decreased tolerance for certain sounds as well as the stimuli that accompany those sounds (for example, loud chewing). I’m very, very sound sensitive. Fire alarm bells bother me so much, that I carry around a set of noise cancelling headphones whenever I walk around in the building.

10. When you eat thick-cut chips/French fries, do you add a sauce such as ketchup or mayonnaise, or do you prefer a condiment like vinegar or lemon with them?
When I ate French Fries, I always had ketchup. Totally delcioius!

5. Have you learned anything new in the past year (a new hobby/craft/language/fact)?
I'm always learning new "facts' from youtube vids. I'd like to learn some new crafts or take up old ones I haven't done in ages (embroidery, weaving, etc, etc).

6. Can you swim? If so, what age were you when you had lessons?
I've known how to swim for as long as I can remember. I don't remember if I took lessons or not. I went to the swimming pool at my local community center or to the ocean at Brighton Beach.

7. Have you ever made pastry from scratch?
Probably did it along with my mom. We did a lot of baking together back in the 60's and 70's.

8. If you could share your life with any kind of animal (assume for a moment that the animal is tame and wouldn’t kill you, and you had the space and resources to care for it *g*), what kind of animal would be your dream companion (real or imaginary)?
A horse or unicorn! I've been told that a horse is my spirit animal, or the animal that I most take after..

9. Do you like wearing hats?
Most winter hats are too tight, so I usually wear a hoodie scarf in the cooler weather. But I do like wearing summer hats to protect my head from the sun in warmer weather.

10. Have you ever been to a horse race?
No, but I just finished watching Wildfire, which is about a young female jockey who loves horse racing.

11. Have you ever taken a first aid course? Do you know how to perform CPR?
No and no. But it would be a good skill to learn.

12. Is there any food you would never contemplate eating?
Eating prehistoric meat, like those scientists did back in 1984. 36,000 year old frozen steppe bison? No way! I mean, I'm vegetarian so I wouldn't eat it anyway, but even when I did eat meat I never would've done this!

13. If you could win a cash prize, what would be the minimum you would want to win?
A million for starters would be nice, lol. But I have won small cash prizes from playing Lotto.

14. Are there many people in your family who are left-handed?
Don't know.

15. When was the last time you laughed out loud?
Yesterday, when watching a youtube vid.

16. Do you still use paperclips?
Sometimes, but not as often as I used to.

20. It’s International Customer Support Day. When was the last time you had to contact customer support? Were they able to help you?
I contacted Amazon and as usual they were very helpful.

21. It’s International Tea Day – do you like a cup of tea every now and again? What type of tea do you drink?
I usually drink Chamomile tea. It’s good for my IBS, calms my nerves and helps me get a few hours of sleep at night.

It’s been so long, I don’t remember.

It would depend on the type of dog and their personality, so I’d need to meet them first before naming them. But if I’d randomly pick a few dog names, then I’d choose Bear or Luna. I also love the name I gave my childhood Cocker Spaniel… Thena. The weirdest name was the official name for my Yorkie from childhood… Wedgewood Fling!

25. It’s estimated that gaming now holds around an 11% share of the global entertainment market. Have you ever played an electronic game (on your phone, computer or a game console)?
I play games on my phone all the time.

Yes, though I usually think of them as plump lower clouds and thin upper clouds, lol.

I have done breathing exercises before, but I haven’t tried box breathing.

I don’t wear perfume and I try to avoid being around anyone wearing a lot of it. It can give me a headache and I don’t like anything that smells artificial.

Today.

30. What is your favourite way to eat vegetables?
I mostly eat them as purees because it’s easier for me to digest them.

31. Have you ever been in a self-driving car? Would you want to try it?
No and no thanks! I don’t trust the technology.

AI videos that aren’t clearly marked that they’re fake.

I used photobooths when I was younger. I haven’t seen one in ages.

3. Do you still pay for things with cash? Have you been somewhere recently where they don’t take cash anymore?
I occasionally pay for things in cash, if it’s small amount. Also, we have a tiny store in my building that’s open a few times a week, and they only take cash.

4. Is rain forecast for your area this week?

My phone and I are never parted, lol.

I've never learned first aid, but I think it's a good thing to know.

I don't drive.

Any color that's too bright. I mean, I like some vibrancy, but some colors literally hurt my eyes.

I've always loved having indoor and outdoor plants. I don't have a balcony or anywhere to do outside gardening anymore, but I still have some lovely houseplants.

I've seen the first one.

I learn new things in relation to my hobbies (coloring, crochet).

Shells or angel hair pasta.

Because I have IBS I'm on a very limited diet, so I'm not able to do this.

Coloring Table and Daily Questions

When I was shopping at Ace Hardware yesterday, I noticed that they had a coloring table for kids in their toy section. It's such a great idea, I wish more stores did this. :)

Back when I ate meat, I did like them. I’ve never had them at Ikea.

I’ve done it a few times for coloring books and once for a stuffed animal for charity.

Yes, I’ve seen pictures of this beautiful book. I don’t remember any of the flower meanings from it.

No, but it sounds like an interesting thing to do.

No plans.

I’ve had stewed rhubarb and rhubarb pie and liked it.

Baby Chicks and Daily Questions

My apologies for once again getting behind on LJ stuff. I'll start catching up today.

We have some baby chicks here! There's an incubator set up in a corner of the community living room and an enclosure in the activity room. 3 chicks have hatched so far (one of them in the pictures, the rest were hiding out). They make such wonderful peeping sounds and they're so cute. :D

Don't remember.

26. Do you still have a landline, or do you only use your mobile phone/cellphone?
I only have an iphone.

27. What sweets/candies do you remember from your childhood? When was the last time you ate some?
Lots of chocolate (plain, with nuts, peanut butter cups, M&M’s, milk duds,malted milk balls etc, etc), fruit leather, lolly pops, candy necklaces, candy fruit slices, jelly beans, taffy. I also loved ice cream. I don't eat sweets anymore.

28. In 2004, Shrek the sheep from Tarras, Central Otago, New Zealand, was finally shorn live on TV after 6 years of avoidance; the fleece weighed 27 kg (60 lb). Do you own, or have you made anything from sheep’s wool?
I’ve knitted and crocheted scarves from wool.

No, I haven't read any of her novels. I like the Nancy Drew books by Carolyn Keene (a pseudonym of over a dozen authors). I also like Josephine Tey's novel "The Daughter of Time"

I'm a big fan of her music and movies. One of the best singing voices ever! I especially like her in the movie "Yentl"

9. It’s National Garlic Month – are you a fan? If so, what’s your favourite recipe using garlic?
I like garlic, but I haven't eaten it in a long time.

10. Do you often see wild birds in your backyard/garden/nearby open spaces? What are the most common ones you see in your area?
Now that it's spring, I see birds quite often. I hear their bird calls starting very early in the morning. The most common ones in this area are robins, crows, starlings, pigeons, stellar jays, finches, wrens and hummingbirds. I'm sure there's more, I don't know all the names.

11. Have you ever flown a kite?
As a kid I'd fly small kites.

12. What’s your favourite breed of dog?
It's hard to choose, there's so many wonderful breeds. Mixed breed dogs are also awesome. I had a cocker spaniel back when I was a teen, so I'm especially fond of them. I've posted these pictures of her before, but I'd like to share them again. She was very sweet, friendly and playful. :)

13. Have you ever volunteered to do something long-term?
For awhile I volunteered to spend time every Tuesday with a senior who was dealing with depression. We would play a game or two of Scrabble and then we'd hang out afterwards and talk.

1. Have you ever been fooled by an ‘April Fool’s Day’ joke?
Yes, but lately it's harder to fool me, lol.

2. Do you prefer sweet things or savoury things to eat?
I like both, it's hard to choose!

3. Do other people shorten your given name? Do you shorten your own name?
No and no.

4. Are there opportunities to go walking where you live? Do you take advantage of that?
I usually walk around my building, which is a circular loop. The back area is next to a forested park.

5. Pineapple on a pizza – yes, or no?
No! Olives, mushrooms, tomatoes, onions, peppers, yes!

6. Is there a fashion or style from your youth that you wish would come back, or are you happy with how people dress these days?
I mostly see people dressing casually and that works to me. I like hippie fashion, I wouldn't mind seeing more of that. Or anything vintage. :)

7. It’s National Robotics Week – if you could have a personal robot, what would you like it to do for you?
My dream robot would help me keep neat and organized.

8. Have you ever played card games? If so, what’s your favourite game?

I like solitaire games, especially Gaps.

This egg opens up and has a lovely Easter scene inside. I found out that it's a vintage hinged Diorama Easter Egg. I've never had one before, I'm so glad I found it!

Daily Questions

23. When was the last time you ate some chocolate?
Chocolate gave me bad breakouts. The last time I ate it was during Halloween in the 1990’s and I had cystic acne for a month afterwards. I had already quit eating it by then and my skin had cleared up. I haven’t eaten any since!

24. Harry Houdini was born today in 1874. Are you a fan of magic shows? Have you ever seen someone perform close-up magic?
I've watched some magic shows on tv, but it's not something I'm interested in.

25. How often do you wash your hair? Do you style it, or just let it dry naturally?
Every week or so I wash it, but I’ve also started using Scrubbz bath and shampoo sponges. It works for hair without having to rinse. Tried it this week for the first time, and it left my hair clean and fluffy. I’m impressed, my hair looks like I used regular shampoo! I let my hair dry naturally or towel dry it (which you have to do when you use the shampoo sponges).

26. In 1484 Aesops Fables were first printed in English by William Caxton. Do you recall any of the fables, such as The Tortoise and the Hare?
The Tortoise and the Hare is my favorite. I also remember the Goose that Laid the Golden Egg, the Boy Who Cried Wolf, The Town Mouse and the Country Mouse, and the Fox and the Grapes.

27. It’s World Theatre Day – when was the last time you went to the theatre?
I don’t remember.

28. Have you ever been to a circus?
No.

29. Have you ever made anything out of clay?
In high school we had pottery classes. On the potter’s wheel I made some bowls. I also made various things by hand, including a pipe (which actually worked, lol).

30. Are you allergic, or have an intolerance, to anything?
I have IBS, so there’s a lot of foods that I don’t tolerate.

31. Do you regularly use your freezer? What do you store in there? Be honest – how often do you check what’s in there…?
I keep Rudi’s frozen Spelt bread in the freezer all the time.
