Wendigo - ep 1.02
The first scene with Sam in episode 2 shows him bringing flowers to Jessica’s grave. He kneels down, saying he should’ve protected her, he should’ve told her the truth. She knew nothing about his hunting life, monsters, or anything supernatural. He tried to run away from it all, but after what happened to Jess, he can no longer hide.
Sam grieving...

edit by me
An arm reaches out from the ground and grabs Sam, and that’s when he wakes up and we know it’s a nightmare. Dean is concerned, and Sam replies that he’s ok, but he’s not.
They follow dad’s coordinates hoping they’ll see him there (they don’t), and end up helping Haley search for her brother Tommy.
Once they figure out it’s a Wendigo that they’re hunting, Sam wants to get Haley and the others back to safety, but none of them want to leave. He’s on edge, and as Dean says later on, “like a powder keg”. Dean wants to continue working the job, but Sam is determined to find dad, and find Jessica’s killer. He’s desperate for answers, but Dean tells him to be patient, because "all that anger, you can't keep it burning over the long haul. It's gonna kill you."
After thinking it over, Sam decides to focus on “saving people, hunting things” for the rest of the ep. And he’ll be even more motivated when the Wendigo captures Dean. It’s a beautiful brother moment when protective!Sam finds Dean and frees him. When the Wendigo corners them later on, Sam shows how much he cares by standing in front and protecting the others behind him.
I’ll be asking questions with each ep. I’d love to hear your answers :)
SPN questions for Wendigo.
1. What do you think is fueling Sam’s anger during this case?
2. Favorite Sam moment?
3. Favorite brother scene?
My answers...
1. I think it’s the way he’s channeling his grief over Jessica’s death, wanting to find her killer and looking for answers. Everything else (including hunting) is seen as a distraction which takes away that goal. But he does end up shifting his focus to “saving people, hunting things”. It could also be partly because of something he hasn’t revealed yet… that he had dreams about Jessica dying, before it happened.
2. After Dean is captured by the Wendigo, Sam freaks out and yells “Dean!”

3. The iconic “saving people, hunting things” scene, which feels like a sacred moment when the brothers and their purpose is defined. It’s them being open and sharing how they feel, and it helps Sam shift to the space where he can focus on the case and help others. I also love the moment when Sam rescues Dean, and they’re both so glad to see each other!
