I saw this excellent video from Terrible Writing Advice (a great channel where advice is given sarcastically), and thought you might all enjoy it. It shows how complicated and how trite rebel groups can be. You might recognize the Varden being described in here.

Yeah, quite recognise the Varden in there. Because why bother with such pesky things as logistics and rebuilding when you rather focus on fight scenes that don't make any sense?
Snark aside, the Varden are honestly a quite good example of an evil rebel group. The only thing they do is completely tear the country apart for the "greater good", while no one wants them.

Some time ago I posted a short "fix it" scene which rebrands the Varden as a State-controlled false flag operation basically run by Galbatorix for the purpose of scaring the population into supporting him instead of any potential opponents of his. Basically a version of the "nice farm you have here, it would be a shame if something happened to it" kind of deal.

With the way the Varden behaved and operated, you basically have to change nothing about the story to make them fit with this reframing.

What I love about the Eragon books is that they are novels written as though they followed all of that Terrible Writing Advice completely straight.

Really, huh? There's massive amounts of padding, retcons every other page, the emotions are terribly written, the characters come off as the opposite of what was intended, there's loads of Deus Ex Machinae, the worldbuilding is bizarre...
These books are valuable, in that they're a great example of what NOT to do, and they're an exercise in how to control subtext.

Watch some more of these videos. The inheritance books all follow the sarcastic advice perfectly. Every lazy step of the way. They are either the product of zero artistic skill, or the most cynical effort to maximize profit to effort and therefore zero artistic integrity. Or both. That’s pretty much the options though. One of them three things.

Goddess, yes. Every line of this video I was thinking of the Varden. Only thing we were missing was a love triangle.

Actually, aren't most love triangles actually corners that the woman is backed into?

The love triangle could have been Nasuada, Roran and Eragon. I don't think it would have ended well at all.

Actually, aren't most love triangles actually corners that the woman is backed into?
That makes quite a lot of sense. I'll call them "love corners" from now on.

Exactly! A love triangle would imply that the two guys could also potentially get together.

Now I'm imagining a story where it's a love pentagon - two guys, two gals, and an eternal otherworldly being above the concept of gender - and all of them are stressing about the fact that they love four people but they have to pick one and it's such a distraction from the plot that the antagonist finally snaps and goes "I have two husbands! You can just all love each other! Now sit down, shut up, and listen to my monologue!"

Wow. This video reminds me how well the Bajoran and Maquis rebel groups were written. (Star Trek DS9)

This was meant to be a reply to Torylltales, the text of the original post should now be in a reply to Torylltales. So, um, how about that weather? Also it's still incredibly gross that the varden pokes around in people's heads at the door.
