Title: Puffy Pot-stickers!
Ratings & Warnings:
Gen
Fandom:
LEGO Ninjago
Details:
Recipe is just a combo of a couple different ones I found online and put together
Summary:
Some pot-stickers I made from scratch based off Chen's Noodle House's special puffy pot-stickers!
Notes:
They sort of came out inconsistently sized, and some of them were bigger than I meant, but I think that just matches them being called puffy pot-stickers (also it meant I could give my friend, whom I forced to go to the store on his way home from work, the puffiest one)

Challenge: Art Is an Explosion

Warnings: None, unless "absolutely kicking ass" is a content warning.

Comment: Hey, as soon as I saw the challenge, I knew I was going to pick an X Japan song. Their stuff is the kind of thing that sets your heart on fire, and they love to start songs off quiet before absolutely exploding into kickass 80s power metal/rock. Desperate Angel, specifically, really rules, a good passionate pulse-pounding classic rock tune that is absolutely guaranteed to make your 40+ male relatives go "holy shit who are these guys and why has the world been keeping them from me" (I speak from experience). Also, the instant I heard the first few notes I was like "oh, this is a Taiji song, isn't it".

We spotted a second set of ducklings on the lake! This was somewhat distressing at first because the babies were following mama to the retaining wall, which she flew up onto and they were stuck below.

effulgence

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for July 10, 2026 is:

effulgence • \ih-FULL-junss\  • noun

Effulgence means “radiant splendor” or “brilliance.”

// Guests oohed and aahed at the sudden effulgence of the pagoda, as the last of its hundreds of candles were finally lit.

See the entry >

Examples:

“No one knows who suggested that the building be lit at night. But the obvious inspiration was Times Square, an area famous for its nighttime effulgence.” — Robert Sharoff, FastCompany.com, 7 July 2025

Did you know?

Need a shiny word to bust out at your next disco party, planetarium visit, or fireworks gathering? How about effulgence? It’s not a shiny “new” word, having made its English language debut in the 17th century, but it’s unusual and has a lovely Latin pedigree: the verb fulgēre, meaning “to shine.” Effulgence isn’t used for bog-standard brightness, however; it’s reserved for shininess that dazzles, inspires, leaves you gobsmacked—in other words, “radiant splendor.”

Before we left Washington DC after our brief but packed visit, my colleague and I paid a visit to the Smithsonian’s National Air & Space Museum. We decided to walk from where we were staying, forgetting that the park around the capitol was completely blocked off for the fair. This turned what would have been a 13-minute walk in the sweltering heat into 35-minute walk in said heat. By the time we got to the museum queue, which stretched beyond the shade of the building, we were melting.

At least we had an odd aerobatics display involving parachutes and upside-down flags to entertain us while we queued.

Epilogue: I didn’t end up replacing my SR-71 blackbird hoodie, because I thought most of the designs in the shop were rather tacky. Everything’s gone to these big screen-printed images that take up the entire front or back (or both) of the item. My old hoodie just had an attractive sewn logo on the top left side on the front. I settled for a t-shirt that had a similar printed logo on the front.

Every Thursday, we have a community post, just like this one, where you can drop a rec or five in the comments.

This works great if you only have one rec and don't want to make a whole post for it, or if you don't have a DW account, or if you're shy. ;)

(But don't forget: you can deffo make posts of your own seven days a week. ;D!)

So what cool fanvids/fanart/podfics/other kinds of fanworks/fics/fancrafts have we discovered this week? Drop it in the comments below. Anon comment is enabled.

BTW, AI fanworks are not eligible for reccing at recthething. If you aware that a fanwork is AI-generated, please do not rec it here.

tacit

Jul. 9th, 2026 01:00 am
[syndicated profile] merriamwebster_feed

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for July 9, 2026 is:

tacit • \TASS-it\  • adjective

Tacit is a formal adjective used to describe something that is expressed or understood without being directly stated.

// As roommates, we had a tacit agreement that we would never pry into each other’s affairs.

See the entry >

Examples:

“Where modern documentaries are slick productions filled with preconceived notions, embedded narratives, and tacit approval of their subjects, [Frederick] Wiseman’s work is slow, contemplative, and refreshingly slant-free.” — Kevin Slane, Boston.com, 24 Feb. 2026

Did you know?

In the first chapter of Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights, the narrator Mr. Lockwood recounts warily encountering three dogs. Although he was sure to sit still, he admits that “imagining they would scarcely understand tacit insults, I unfortunately indulged in winking and making faces at the trio” (one subsequently leapt onto his knees in fury). His tacit insults were, by the relevant definition of tacit, not expressed with words (instead he used facial expressions). Tacit can also mean “implied or indicated (as by an act or by silence) but not expressed,” as when a tacit agreement is understood without being directly stated, and tacit approval is silently granted. Tacit traces back to the Latin verb tacēre, meaning “to be silent,” which is also the ancestor of the English adjective taciturn, used to describe someone who tends to be quiet.

[personal profile] stepnix

HeartQuest is an early 2000s FUDGE-derived system for shoujo manga-style campaigns. Steel Roses is the expansion that adds mecha. Supposedly it's inspired by Escaflowne, Rayearth, and Sakura Wars, but i got a lot of loose Evangelion vibes from it.

I'm just kinda amused and amazed that this exists. fascinating artifact. who convinced all these writers that mech games need AI rules. why are they Asimov again

I wrote about the different effects of creating a GIF (moving image) or a collage (compilation of multiple images into one static image out of frames from the same scene, which I thought might interest other photo editors. While writing it, I came across the Fanlore entry on the picspam that likens picspams to fanart. It's a first for me to see picspams described that way!
