Warnings: The lyrics discuss death, but it's pretty subdued for a menhera kei band.

Comment: The vocalist is amazing, his voice is the perfect heartbroken longing desperately-trying-not-to-cry that this song needs. I adore the frantic, racing drumbeat in the background, as well as the very classical-Japanese sounding intro. Definitely going to be checking out more of this band's stuff.

It's July now, so this time around I've chosen a challenge inspired by the fireworks displays that light up summer nights. Okamoto Tarō (and absolutely nobody else) once said that "art is an explosion," so let's prove him right and share some songs that absolutely explode. A song that starts quietly and then explodes a few seconds in is just as valid as a song that saves everything for the final chorus. I'm looking forward to watching the fireworks with you all 🎆

Obligatory template:
elyusion: orange tabby cat wearing headphones, screaming (actually probably yawning) (music)

Warnings: Nudity, a lady is butt naked.

Comment: I wanted to post something else for the challenge last day of June, but I blanked. Can't remember any gaybaiting suddenly. So instead please take Hakuei looking like he has been possessed by the ghost of 70s shoujo manga and men just generally writhing around in agony for reasons that might make sense if you watched all the MVs in order. But probably not. (This and this have the same setting and woman, so these definitely are supposed to be telling a story, but I haven't made time to look into it all yet.) Burying the homies alive... or whatever they're doing in the B-plot is probably a little gay if you think about it?

Fun MV to watch in my opinion, but I do like the song too. Big fan of when the chorus comes in :]

Challenge: Kissing the Homies Goodnight

Warnings: boyxboy don't like don't read

Here's a performance at Club Citta in 1990...

And here's one at Tokyo Dome in 1989, cut down to only the most important parts.

Comment: You have no idea how long I dragged myself through the depths of YouTube trying to find a better-quality upload of the first video. I love it when you're watching a live recording where the bandmen Do A Stagegay and you can hear screaming on the live audio. Live Fujo Reaction. Also, I had to share this fanart. Truly adore how Atsushi is always putting his whole pussy into the seduction and Imai's like For Legal Reasons I Have To Establish That I Do Not Know This Man, Have Never Met This Man, And Am Not Participating In This Nonsense He Has Decided On. oh and also the song's good i guess

Challenge: Kissing the Homies Goodnight
Warnings: Making out, necking, etc.

Comment: The song starts at 2:04, the challenge fill is technically interspersed throughout the whole MV but the real jawdropper is at 4:53. Hope you like it as much as I did when I first saw it ^v^!

Warnings: Imagery of forced feeding and forced restraint in a mental hospital setting

Comment: You know, in JPN-speaking fandom, they call them kamiban. The term comes from the idea that they were simply too good to exist in this world, that the gods had to take them away, visit misfortune on them. It sucks so profoundly what happened to Lyrica, especially because it feels like they were capable of so much more. They were only able to release a few songs, but they're all solid bangers. They had plans to perform overseas! Anyways, picked this song because it's a song I chose for a "characters from X franchise as vkei songs" post I'm planning on making*, but it's really wonderful, I love the pounding background beat and Usagi's almost-pained vocals- he may have had Standard Vkei Voice (tm), but he knew how to use it, and in all of this band's MVs, he looks like he's having the time of his life acting his little heart out. Wherever he is now, I hope he's doing all right.

(*If you can guess the franchise and character, you get Internet Points. Hint, it's a joseimuke...)

Warnings: Menhera kei-typical Mental Illness Themes (tm)

Comment: Ai continues to be a Fucking Good Lyricist and a Fucking Good Singer. The atmosphere of this song is so heavy, it feels like an iron stake to the heart. I love it.

Warnings: Lyrics are kind of warlike

Comment: Been digging into more Pierrot lately, so I've been wanting to post a song of theirs for a while, but it's hard, because there's very little overlap in the songs that I find musically interesting and the songs of theirs that I find lyrically interesting. GOD BLESS xmexxxx falls in the latter category, as the main thing I like about it is the guitar bit at the end (it's just a bit too slow for me), but the lyrics.. Hey, if you find another vkei song that's probably about critiquing the US's actions in the Middle East after 9/11, then by all means, send it to me!

(kirito-sama i'm very sorry that my main mental association with you was "that bandman who got shipped with his brother a lot" you seem very cool and #based sir and i am sorry i misjudged you even a little bit sir)

[personal profile] wintermintly told me to name it this, blame her.

The challenge for June (and the rest of eternity if you so please) is sharing music or concert videos where the members are.... rather touchy-feely with each other, to say the least. We all love homoerotic fanservice around here, surely. Well now's your chance to show your favorite moments! Have fun and don't forget to be yourself 🖤🎶

Here's the template if you're into that sort of thing:

Comment: It appears to be my sworn mission in life to get more people into BabyKingdom. And I have chosen to do this by... reccing a song that's the complete opposite of their typical ovre? Eh, it's a good song. It honestly reminds me of a lot of kote kei stuff, until you glance at the MV and see Monyo rocking out in his cute little lamb outfit and remember that this is BabyKingdom.

Comment: This song is so damn fun and peppy and bouncy. Taiji's bass riffs here do things to my ovaries.

Warnings: Yoshiatsu shoots himself in the head at the end of the MV.

Comment: This song's lyrics are very striking and sad in their simplicity. This isn't just a War Is Bad song, but a War Is Bad And It's Our Fault, We Are The Ones Doing This, Stop Shooting And Crying You Assholes song. The translation is great, getting across the message while not being too clunky or unnatural. Yoshiatsu does a great job here, both with his voice and as a physical actor on the MV. He might have Standard Vkei Voice, but he's got a wonderful artistic range.

Warnings: None particularly.

Comment: Dadaroma were artists who dared to ask the question of "what if we direct our vkei decadent gothic energies towards making a song about being a stray kitty cat? And it fucking rules.

princessal: A picture of Draculaura, a pink-skinned vampire girl with black and pink hair tied into pigtails. She is looking over her shoulder and smiling. (Default)

Warnings: Flashing lights, profanity

Comment: For ages I misheard "are you honest, are you honest / is this what you wanted?" as "I own it, I own it / it's this much, you want it?" like we're at Sakurai's weird and scary flea market table lol

Challenge: Do Not Pass the VKei Fan the Aux

Warnings: There is no music video but I can not adequately explain how fucked up the lyrics are if you chose to go seeking them out. TRIGGER WARNING FOR CSA. TRIGGER WARNING FOR CSA. TRIGGER WARNING FOR CSA.

Comment: Senketsu A-ko-chan is a band that dares to ask the question "does music have to be good?" Is it not enough to be four edgelords with some fake blood, school uniforms, whatever props they can make out of stuff they find around their homes, and a probably-pirated copy of Windows Movie Maker? Their music, for me, firmly falls into the "makes no damn sense, compels me though" category of art. I see why the TikTok newgens like it- "Music To Freak Out Your Parents To" is a fundamental part of any teenager's range of musical tastes, and it warms my heart to think about how somewhere, some clueless parent is being subjected to Hiro-kun's atonal gurgling with absolutely no idea that he's singing about deeply deeply fucked shit. God bless. (Honestly, should have probably picked something with a music video to truly show off their... unique energy, but I like this song. Sue me.)

Three Weeks for Dreamwidth is over, so the raffle has ended, and a winner has been chosen. And that winner is......... someone who I will let announce themself if they so choose!

But thank you so much to everyone who participated in the community in the past 3 weeks, or ever. Even though I'm not tossing out any more points, I really do hope you all continue participating in whatever ways you can. The amount of activity recently has left me overjoyed, and I pray it was no fluke.

Challenges are open indefinitely (except the non-vkei ones, which I need to make a rule for but I'll worry about that later), so there likely won't be a new one until June. I hope you all have a good day, I hope things get better for you all, and I hope we all can keep having fun here in [community profile] vkotd ^_^!!

Comment: Ah, this song is lovely, a nice blending of lullaby vibes and rock/metal drums and guitar. Ai, as usual, sounds amazing here, I love every opportunity he gets to really show off how powerful of a vocalist he can be. The lyrics really stuck me in the heart- it's a song about an abused child turning to delusion (and sleeping pills) to cope with their mother's abuse. I've noticed that a lot of gulu gulu songs seem to be written from the perspective of a child. (If Ai crawling around under the bed was too scary for you, feel free to check out the making-of video on their YouTube channel, where all the members proceed to act like giant dorkasses and fool around in the big house they rented)

Comment: I'm doing a new thing on my vkei Tumblr where I post and analyze an iconic vkei visual once a week, and as I was digging through Jrocknews' "new look" tag for ideas, I kept seeing this band over and over again and I just sort of... fell in love with their visuals? (And maybe their bassist. He's so damn cute!) So I decided to check out their music, and oh my god, their music is what happiness sounds like? I think I might be in love... This song is cute and poppy, but it's got nice strong electric guitar and a very motivational feeling. Listening to it, I feel like an anime protagonist setting out on their journey, and the lyrics fit this theme too, it's about facing the future no matter how scary and rejecting convention (or at least I think that's what they're about, they're using a lot of complicated old Japanese..)
