Dark Synchro Monsters (Japanese: ダークシンクロモンスター Dāku Shinkuro Monsutā) are a type of Monster Card exclusive to the anime, manga, and Yu-Gi-Oh! Tag Force video games. They are a type of Synchro Monster that all have Negative Levels (in the anime and video games), represented by blue orbs with purple stars. The color of their card frame is a dark gray with a brownish tint.
They are Dark Synchro Summoned by sending 1 Dark Tuner monster and 1 non-Tuner monster to the Graveyard. The non-Tuner monster's Level minus the Dark Tuner monster's Level must be equal to the Dark Synchro Monster's negative Level.
Dark Synchro Monsters are still treated as Synchro Monsters, and effects that apply to Synchro Monsters, such as "Synchro Destructor", also apply to Dark Synchro Monsters. Similarly, Dark Synchro Summons are still treated as Synchro Summons, such as for the effect of "Dark Tuner Catastrogue".
Dark Synchro Monsters debuted in Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's episode 27: "A Web of Deceit, Part 1". They are also present in the Yu-Gi-Oh! Tag Force video game series from Tag Force 4 onwards.
Because of the greater difficulty in Summoning them, Dark Synchro Monsters are generally more powerful than Synchro Monsters of their equivalent positive Level.

In the animeEdit
Dark Synchro Monsters are summoned by most Dark Signers as a prelude to summoning their Earthbound Immortal monsters. Shadow Drones controlled by Roman Goodwin also have their decks temporarily modified to incorporate Dark Synchro Monsters. Dark Synchro Monsters generally have a Type and effect that correlates with their respective Dark Signer's deck, although Dark Synchros used by Shadow Drones have only been shown to be Fiend-type.
The only Dark Signers to not utilize a Dark Synchro Monster are Carly Carmine and Misty Tredwell. No dialogue suggests whether they did or did not possess any such monster.
On the card layout, the Negative Level Stars are left-aligned (similar to the Ranks of an Xyz Monster) as opposed to the right-aligned Levels of other monsters. Unlike the text on standard Synchro Monsters which lists their Synchro Material requirements Tuner-first, the text seen on Dark Synchro Monsters in the Japanese anime lists the Tuner monster requirement last. In the Japanese anime, the card frame is colored dark gray, serving as a contrast to regular white-bordered Synchro Monsters. In the dub, the card layout is primarily dark brown.
In the mangaEdit
In the Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's manga, "Ultimate God Ultimaya Tzolkin" and "Ultimate Phantasm God Ultimitl Bishbaalkin" are Level 0 Synchro Monsters that have to be Synchro Summoned using a Minus Tuner monster to obtain a total Level of 0. Although they are not specifically stated to be Dark Synchro Monsters, this process of Summoning them resembles the way Dark Synchro Monsters were Synchro Summoned using a Dark Tuner in the anime. Both of these monsters are representations of the Ultimate God summoned by Rex Goodwin.
In the OCG/TCGEdit
No monsters are designated as Dark Synchro Monsters in the OCG/TCG. All Dark Synchro Monsters have been released as regular Synchro Monsters, with either regular (but highly specific) Synchro Summoning requirements or a special Summoning condition that simulates a Dark Synchro Summon.
Dark Synchro Monsters from the anime (except "Moon Dragon Quilla") require 1 DARK-Attribute Tuner monster (instead of Dark Tuner monsters) and non-Tuner monsters of the same Type as then non-Tuner monster that was used for their Dark Synchro Summon in anime (e.g. in the anime, Grady Dark Synchro Summoned "Frozen Fitzgerald" using "Blizzard Lizard"; as such, the OCG/TCG card "Frozen Fitzgerald" requires Beast-Type non-Tuner monsters).
When "One Hundred-Eyed Dragon" was printed for the OCG/TCG, its effect was redesigned to specifically support the "Earthbound Immortal" archetype, simulating how it was used by Kalin Kessler in the anime.
In Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Links, dialogue from Dark Signer Carly Carmine indicates that "Fortune Lady Every" is a Dark Synchro Monster. Carly Carmine never performs any form of Synchro Summon in 5D's, and "Every" was printed eight years after 5D's finished airing. Although "Every" does not require a DARK-Attribute Tuner monster, it still requires non-Tuner monsters correlating with the Type used in Carly's deck (the Spellcaster-type Fortune Ladies).
"Ultimaya Tzolkin" and "Phantasmal Lord Ultimitl Bishbaalkin" require sending 1 Tuner and 1 non-Tuner with the same Level as each other from the player's field to the Graveyard, resembling their summon condition in the manga. The levels of these sent monsters need to be relatively high, analogous to the high levels of Dark Tuners in the anime. Flavorfully, these two Synchro Monsters are Level 0 to match their depiction in the manga, although they are always treated as Level 12 due to the condition in their texts.
"Ursarctic" Synchro Monsters also have a special Summoning condition where the difference between the Levels of the pseudo-materials is used to perform the Summon, as that is what has to match the Synchro Monster's Level rather than the sum. The first Level 1 Synchro Monsters, something impossible to Synchro Summon, belong to this archetype, and do not care which Level is higher. Higher-Level "Ursarctic" Synchro Monsters require the Tuner to have a higher Level than the non-Tuner.
The method to summon "Ultimaya Tzolkin", "Phantasmal Lord Ultimitl Bishbaalkin", and the "Ursactic" monsters are not treated as a Synchro Summon; the monsters sent to the GY are not considered Synchro Materials, unlike in the anime and manga. These monsters are also the only Synchro Monsters that cannot be Synchro Summoned.
The OCG/TCG printings of the Dark Tuner monsters "Catastrogue" and "Nightmare Hand" can Tribute themselves and another monster to Special Summon a Synchro Monster with Level equal to the Tributes' difference, replicating the process of using them for a Dark Synchro Summon.
In the Tag Force video gamesEdit
Despite their summoning procedure requiring the Level total of the non-Tuner monster and the Dark Tuner monster to match a specific negative value, Dark Synchro Monsters themselves have a positive Level, and are affected normally by Level-based effects. They can be used as Synchro Material as well, both for normal Synchro Monsters and for other Dark Synchro Monsters, and they can also be used as Xyz Materials following the introduction of Xyz Monsters in Tag Force 6.
Dark Synchro Monsters remain playable as such in the Tag Force video games even as they began to be released as normal Synchro Monsters in the OCG/TCG. Both versions of the cards can be included in the same Deck, but they still follow naming rules, and only up to 3 cards with the same name can be used at once.
