Character musical chairs

If the Buffyverse characters were mapped onto the Firefly characters, who would be who's doppleganger? The funny thing is that as I got halfway through the list I was suddenly reminded of [insanejournal.com profile] eliade's brilliant final (well it's seeming pretty final these days) chapter to her Season Noir. Which, if you haven't read it, you should. By suddenly seeing the characters in different roles I started considering things I hadn't noticed before. (No promises of originality).

In order of how they came to mind:

River/Fred, Simon/Wes - This seems so clear to me it's remarkable I didn't think of it after just a few episodes. But then, AtS S5 hadn't happened yet. Crazy River is not unlike crazy Fred, brilliant and resourceful, bearing up under horrible conditions. Of course in River's case it's understandable why she's rather childlike given that she is young, but Fred has to be in at least her mid 20s by the time we see her, given her level of education. Of course maybe she's a prodigy herself. Wes certainly thought so in "Supersymmetry."

Speaking of Wes, the rather brainy and talented man hopelessly devoted to River, er, Fred. We know Wes would kill for her, die for her, and I am quite sure, give up his own ambitions to rescue her if it came to that. In fact Wes was pretty willing to go against his family for his own reasons, at least after a while. But then, Simon seems to have had a better relationship with his family than Wes did. Certainly early Wes is like a more cartoonish version of Simon, although both also have the ability to go pretty Bondish when push comes to shove. As for superpowers, Fred does become Illyria...

Greatest Hits

In the interests of bringing more content over here I thought I'd go through my LJ and either repost items such as meta here or rethink and update older posts. Even though I've had an LJ for three years now, I never posted much the first year or two so it's actually not that daunting a project. And it's interesting to see how my use for the blog has changed over time. One thing I'm really glad of is that tags got introduced fairly early on because I rely on them a great deal in finding things.

And for the first post I thought I'd do a pointer to past recs I've done, both on my journal and on Buffyverse Top 5.
Video Recs and Other Recs. I'd also start by repositng my two Firefly content posts. First up is my review from a preview screening of Serenity Collapse )

Things going in and out of my brain

Just an odd collection of things that got my attention today:

1) Jane Espenson wants to work for FNL next. I find myself unsurprised by this given its writing reputation. Also, I would guess she wants to move in and out of genre shows so that's a better choice than, say, Heroes (which I'm not sure she's mentioned on her blog yet). If you want to hear a Q&A Jane just did it's here (spoilers for BSG S3 finale).

2) Supernatural is the show most watched by families on any network. Color me surprised, as my first thought wouldn't be that it was family viewing. OTOH, there's probably few shows on TV as centered on family as this one, so...food for thought.

3) Firefly a hit in space. Have to say the photos made me smile.

3) spn_j2_bigbang has to be the most amazing ficathon ever -- novellas (with artwork!) at a time when longer stories don't get written as much. I've only gotten to a few of the stories so far but they've been really engaging. I'm still seeing longer stories in the Buffyverse but generally they're series that have been going on a while and have thus developed a high page count. To have a whole bunch of them rolling out one right after the other? Pretty awesome.

LJ Banned from Libraries?

Maybe. Just gacked this from witling. In addition to the problems which are being raised in the Net Neutrality debate we now have a bill which has passed in the House, the the Deleting Online Predators Act, or DOPA (should just be DOPISH) which would affect libraries and schools. According to the NY Times:

LiveJournal would be specifically affected by this part of the definition of prohibited sites:
(iii) permits registered users to create an online journal and share such a journal with other users;

The Senate may vote as early as next week.

On a completely different note, I came across these Serenity binders on clearance at Wal-Mart last week.

Between the dotted lines

I should be working on something else at the moment but my computer (for the third time in the last week) shut down my word processor and thus lost about 10 minutes worth of writing and I am a little too annoyed at the moment to start recreating it. So I thought I’d ramble a bit here instead before going back to work.

It just occured to me that in the last year I have been reading more stories about a post-Shansu Spike. Given the ending of AtS that isn’t really a surprise. There were stories about a Shansu!Spike before AtS S5 even started. But I’m still hoping for a definitive version of one. I’ve read wonderful interpretations of Souled!Spike and Chipped!Spike, PreChip!Spike, newly raised Spike, William, Jerk!Spike and Romantic!Spike. But so far, while there have been some enjoyable takes at Shansu!Spike, I don’t know if any of them have been completely satisfying. And I wonder if this is because, well, we really have no idea what he’d be like. We’ve seen all those other incarnations in canon, but from the sound of it we will never see a Shansu!Spike, so that one is left Collapse )

I don’t know how many other people have gotten the Serenity Visual Companion. I was interested in it because it incuded a history of the verse by Joss. Unfortunately I found that rather brief and with less new information than I’d hoped. On the other hand, I learned that one of the worlds in the Fireflyverse is called Angel. Heh. And that there is a typo in the name of Londinium in (what I assume is) an image of River’s desk computer display.

The book is decently priced though, considering the many color images ($14 on Amazon). I also thought having the “Serenity” script would be handy, and was expecting it to be reproduced in script form. But it’s actually wrapped around many photo illustrations for the film. I’ve only read one deleted scene so far but I look forward to going through it all more carefully soon.
