The End of Everything

Appropriately, Mike is currently programming our replacement DVR. After a technical failure we had to change devices and luckily for us it happened when most of our viewing was going on hiatus, because we've been watching stuff like crazy to clear its memory. I haven't said much about some of these shows but for what it's worth:

1) Avengers Age of Ultron Collapse )

2) Agents of SHIELD finale Collapse )

3) The ongoing departures at the Daily Show are getting a little depressing. Collapse )

4) Although I've generally been enjoying The Nightly Show, the recent appearance of Vincent Kartheiser was a total waste of time. Seriously, could no one think of anything more interesting to discuss with him than the finale of a show 3 days away?

5) Mad Men finale Collapse )

6) Gotham finale Collapse )

7) Once Upon a Time's finale Collapse )

8) Forever Collapse )

9) Arrow Collapse )

10) Castle Collapse )

11) Brooklyn Nine-Nine Collapse )

In with the new, out with the elderly

Monday was certainly a good night for TV. Besides a particularly good Castle and an interesting interview with Anand Giridharadas (who I happen to have heard in a different interview earlier that day), they had one of their best correspondent segments ever. This is why diversity in your cast is important.

I ended up reading a slew of Wall Street Journal articles yesterday. I can't call it the FOXification of news since it's conservative but not hysterical. It's certainly Murdochian though. Witness the following quotes:

From a news story on Disney providing content for Yahoo TV: "The ESPN widget could include short clips with scores and statistical information, while the Disney widget could include items such as movie trailers or clips from Disney Channel, the people said. The ABC widget could offer limited content from TV shows…The new Disney widgets would be free to consumers"

OMG, they would give us their ads and non-proprietary content for free! We are the luckiest of lucky consumers! Collapse )

Shows and surprises

When I saw the headline Twitter + Random Acts of Kindness = A Successful Social Campaign I thought it was about Misha Collins' charity. Uh, no, just a marketing strategy by a razor corporation. A clever one but it would have been more rewarding to see something about an actual charity than this relatively lengthy article helping a company promote itself.

Speaking of promotion and crowd sourcing, I'll be curious to see how this experiment pans out: Startup Offers Bands a Record Label Run by Fans

Some thoughts about The Cape and Castle with asides to Being Human and Chuck. Collapse )

It made me wonder though, what it is about characters (whether in "bromance" shows or ship shows) that make us care about whether or not they do get together. Obviously we must like them, but is it simply a matter of whether or not we see chemistry between them? Is it the type of relationship they already have vs. might have? Is it just that we want to see the story go to certain places?

The past few weeks in TV

Still behind on viewing anything but SPN really. Some observations:

30 Rock: The live episode was not as entertaining as the typical episode, although the guest star appearances were a highlight. We were wondering if the writers were worried enough about Tracy Jordan going off script that they wrote his part that way deliberately.

Community: Continues to kick the ass of most shows on TV, although the last episode was as much product placement as show. Tone it down guys!

The Office: Still feeling kind of meh, but not enough to take it off the schedule.

Castle: Is it my imagination or is the show going into an increasingly jokey mode? Also, isn't this the 2nd episode on LARPing we've seen so far?

Glee: Collapse )

Mad Men: Collapse )

Speaking of SPN earlier, I finally saw House of Wax and while less than blown away by it as a film, I have to admit it was more unnerving than I expected. Not so much creepy as filled with "Ew." It did make me wish that shows would do video commentaries more often though, as it was kind of amusing to watch the cast watching their pseudo-gag reel.

General TV stuff …

…because I'm going to spend this season permanently behind on a lot of shows and discussion.

Chuck: Collapse )

Community: Collapse )

30 Rock: Collapse )

The Office: Collapse )

Castle: Collapse )

Covert Affair: Over now, but I think I'll keep it on the schedule. The general plots were so-so, I haven't been taken with them. But I like the cast of characters and the coming fight of the married partners for their roles in the agency seems promising. The sister and her family continue to be an ill used footnote to the show, and I hope the central drama of the lost love affair goes by the wayside because it didn't grab me. But I think there's a chance the show will grow on me.

There's a bunch of new shows I've been seeing reviews for that sound interesting, but things are so full on the viewing schedule now that I don't know as I'm going to be able to follow up on any of them. I'm watching 7 other shows in addition to the above, not counting stuff like the latest Ken Burns' documentary, the return of Caprica, or the eventual return of shows like Leverage and White Collar. I definitely can't relate to people who have nothing they want to watch on TV; my plate has been too full for years.

Love means never having to scream for help

Post title taken, by the way, from a line in this review of Boxing Helena.

I feel frustrated about watching women on TV. It seems that there are shows I enjoy, there are characters I enjoy, and there are storylines I wish were different.

This week I tried out Rizzoli & Isles, the new procedural on TNT. I did like the characters. I was not particularly captivated by the plot, (and the Charles Malik Whitfield appearance was way too brief). For one, I figured the story out about 30 seconds after the killer appeared on screen. For another, there is a reason I don't watch most procedurals – I just find them dull. I will try it out again next week but I am not feeling optimistic. So far I've seen about six minutes of the Mad Men season debut and it already made me laugh several times (and it's not a show noted for its likable characters or its humor).

Another new show I've been watching is The Good Guys. I've been enjoying it. It's a cop show, but it has a quirky take, and the two leads work well together. It's even lighter than Leverage or White Collar, which I don't mind at all (SPN is my primary fandom right now, after all). But after several episode I am less than thrilled about the token female characters in it. Collapse )
