Support for PM's party falls to five-year low

The opposition Social Democrats lead Helsingin Sanomat's latest voter sentiment survey.

Support for Finland's ruling National Coalition Party (NCP) has fallen to its lowest level in more than five years, according to the latest polling by Helsingin Sanomat.

The party of Prime Minister Petteri Orpo now commands 16.7 percent support, its weakest showing in the newspaper's survey since April 2021.

The opposition Social Democratic Party (SDP) leads the poll, with 23.8 percent support.

The Finns Party, a partner in the governing coalition, ranks third on 14.2 percent, followed closely by the opposition Centre Party at 13.7 percent.

The poll, conducted by the research firm Verian, surveyed more than 3,500 respondents through an online panel. The margin of error is ±1.7 percentage points for the largest parties.

The PM has faced weeks of growing controversy over the government's approval of €35m in support for a sports venue project led by former NCP cabinet minister.

The attacker published a manifesto saying that he intended to kill as many "immigrants, leftists, transsexuals and homosexuals" as possible.
