Program Notes
Wagner wrote this march of homage for the nineteen-year-old king Ludwig II, who ascended to the Bavarian throne early in 1864. He became Wagner's most loyal patron, spending a fortune on his gifted friend. The work was composed for military band, and in that form it was premiered as a serenade to the king in October 1864 at the royal castle at Hohenschwangau. For the occasion, three infantry bands from Munich were combined and conducted by Johann Siebenkäs, the bandmaster of the First Infantry (the King's Own) Regiment. A transcription for orchestra was begun later by Wagner; it was completed by Joseph Raff in 1869. On Wagner's 57th birthday in May 1870, the Military Band of Lucerne granted a request by Cosima von Bülow to honor the composer with an early morning performance of this march. It was played again by a military band at the laying of the cornerstone of the Wager Theater in Bayreuth in 1872.
