Program Notes

A brief, light hearted (yet schizophrenic) work that rapidly trespasses through a frantic series of band and anti-band dream states. The title is drawn from the works' many atypical band sounds, techniques and effects...such as dangerously 'irregular' keys (B Major, F# minor, etc.), restless solos, slow, winding chromaticism and a brief, irreverent vocal reference to Wagner's Tristan und Isolde. Illegal substances and exports, as might first be suggested by the title, are acknowledged only by a fleeting reference to Eliott Ness and The Untouchables in the closing moments of the piece

Commissioned by the Indiana University Band.
