Program Notes

Axiom - a statement or proposition which is regarded as being established, accepted or self-evidently true.

I want students to make a bold statement with this piece for younger students. The piece begins with a strong maestoso fanfare gesture that should be punctuated with full accented notes, but with carefully placed staccato notes to set off this style to come for the main section of the piece. The work then moves into the main theme of the piece that begins with a light staccato accompaniment in the flutes and oboe. This is followed by the angular main theme first stated in the trumpets and alto saxophones. The fanfare returns but at the faster tempo, which is then followed by the lush and more sustained B section of the piece. The students should take special care to shape the long notes with the rise and fall of the melody. We then move to a pseudo-development section with interplay of the main theme between the upper and lower voices and percussion. The B section returns, then the fanfare, then one last time through the main theme before the short coda.

It has been my pleasure to have the opportunity to write this piece. I hope you and your students enjoy it and find it useful for your program.
