Biography

Jefferson "Jeff" ^[1] or "Big Jeff" ^[2] Treece was born January 16, 1856 in Claiborne County, Tennessee to John Treece and Charity Drummonds. He was the youngest boy of the family, and he was too young to serve in the Civil War. His eldest brother, Squire, older by about twenty years, and his father both served in the Civil War on the Union side, so war was quite impactful on the family.

Jefferson was about eleven years old when his father died in 1867, and Jefferson no doubt had to do many of the farm duties.

He married Narcissus Day 10 Dec 1876 in Claiborne County, Tennessee ^[3] and they had twelve children ^{[4] [5] [6]}. In addition to their own children, Jefferson and Narcissus substantially raised at least two others: Hazel, daughter of Lillie Belle Treece and Minnie, daughter of James Zachariah Treece ^[2].

Religion was a big part of his life. He was a faithful member of the church, and he served as a clerk of the Red Hill Missionary Baptist Church for forty-five years. He also read the bible every night ^[2].

Jefferson died at age 82 on 23 March 1938, in the house of his oldest son, Moses. He wrote a will about a year before he died, leaving money and property to Moses. Jefferson is buried at Old Red Hill Cemetery in Speedwell, Claiborne County, Tennessee ^[7].
