Genealogical Interests
Communication Preferences: I am interested in communicating with cousins and anyone else with an interest in genealogy.
Here is my family tree.
I am interested in finding possibly-related Treece, Wall, and Pittman surname male testers who are interested in doing Y DNA testing.
These are active research projects going back to at least Colonial America, with various Y DNA lines that may match.
I'll help research DNA connections and on-the-ground genealogy research as best I can.

Biography
- As of April 2026: I am in West Lafayette, Indiana
Brief intro
- Hi, I'm Jef Treece. I work regularly on genealogy for myself besides volunteering to help others. I assist with a few DNA Projects, and I'm knowledgeable in genetic genealogy. I regularly update wikitree for a range of profiles - often Walls. My genetic Y-DNA goes back to a Wall, and is also connected to the "Captain Thomas Pitman" lineage, which includes many Pittman and Wall DNA members. I have written some software programs for helping with DNA matches. Besides genetic genealogy, I also have a hobby of growing giant vegetables. Common concept with genetic genealogy: growing a giant vegetable requires keeping track of the pedigree of the seed.
Autosomal DNA Project - Captain Thomas Pitman and Joseph Wall
- If you think you are a descendant of Thomas Pittman or Joseph Wall and have DNA results at gedmatch, please request to join the ancestor project there (under "Free Tools" at the main menu) - look for Ancestors connecting back to Captain Thomas Pitman or Joseph Wall of Colonial Virginia. Include why you think you are a descendant in your join request.
Recruiting for DNA Projects!!
- Jef helps with several Y DNA project (generally aligned with researching certain surnames).
- The Pittman DNA Project seeks new Y-DNA testers. Please contact Jef, if you're interested, and we can see if yours is a good fit for the project. If your lineage may be part of the "Captain Thomas Pittman" line (see CTP DNA Study) there may be funding available to sponsor the expense. This is an international project, so it doesn't matter where you're located. See also the project page.
- Also, the Wall DNA Project needs new testers in certain lines. I'm also interested in talking to Wall/Walls potential testers around the globe. project page.
- Jef also actively recruits testers for the Treece DNA Project and the Shuman DNA Project.
- If you have interest in any of these projects, even if it's just to ask questions, please contact Jef, and he will be happy to talk to you.
Bio
- Jef Treece is a graduate of Purdue University (home page), and he worked in Electrical and Software Engineering until retirement. He is knowledgeable in software, databases, and associated technologies, including SQL, Python, Linux, spreadsheets, scripting and automating and web.
- His hobbies include growing giant vegetables (current Oregon record-holder for giant field pumpkins URL, as well as a few Indiana records - field pumpkin, long gourd, and bushel gourd; previous eggplant record holder) and of course, genetic genealogy.
- He is a volunteer co-administrator and research analyst of the Treece[1], Pittman[2], Wall[3], Clegg[4], Shuman[5] and Place[6] surname projects at FamilyTreeDNA. In this role, he assists with the Y DNA and autosomal DNA study, matching, reporting and test advice. He also helps research records and genealogy of family lines represented in the projects. His top area of expertise is Y DNA and NGS tests such as Big-Y.
- Based on DNA results and genealogy, he's a known patrilineal descendant of John Treece, b.1812 in Surry County, North Carolina. John, his 2nd GGF, is an active puzzle. John's biological father was likely an unknown Wall of Group A in the Pittman project. Ultimately, this line is thought to connect to Captain Thomas Pitman of Colonial Virginia.
- Traditional genealogy has John as a son of George Treece, b.1787 in North Carolina, making John a grandson of Michael Treece, b.1759 in PA. These patrilineal connections do not hold up to DNA scrutiny. Numerous descendants of Michael, George, and John have DNA results available for comparison.

Please help us build one Collaborative Global Family Tree, with only one profile per person. It's important that no duplicates are created and profiles are properly sourced- if you have pre-1700's ancestors please read our Pre-1700 profiles.
Drop into our friendly Genealogist to Genealogist (G2G) forum to introduce yourself - you can access the G2G by selecting G2G Profile from your My WikiTree menu at the top right of most pages.
WikiTree may be overwhelming at first, so don't hesitate to ask questions in the G2G or seek assistance from a Mentor.
