Biography
- George Treece was born about 1787 in North Carolina, likely Rowan County. George's uncle, Jacob, lived in southern Rowan County, near the border of then Mecklenburg County, and Michael, George's father, lived in Rowan County in 1790.
- Later, in 1810, George lived in Surry County, North Carolina[1].
- George married Hanna Crutchfield (other spellings of surname exist) in 1810 in Surry County, North Carolina. Soon thereafter, the family relocated to eastern Tennessee.
- Around 1815, the family moved to Claiborne County, Tennessee, where they remained[2].
- George died by 1840[3].
Name
- Descendants of Andreas Driess (bef.1685-) spell their name variously in America. Trease, Dreese, Treas, and other spellings are known to have the same root, from DNA testing[4].
- Treece is used as the primary alternative, as most of George's descendants spell their name this way, and this is how his wife is recorded on the 1870 census[5]
- George Trease (alternative)
- Multiple versions of his surname spelling can be found. For example, he's indexed as George Trease on the 1830 census[2]
- This spelling is also valid, especially as recorded on some earlier census records. Some Dries descendants probably didn't know how to spell their name, and they eventually settled on something.
Birth
- Date: between 1787 and 1790
- The year of birth can be pinned down from multiple census records. 1790 is consistent with the information that can be found.
- There is another George, cousin of this George, who was born a bit later, likely 1792, who doesn't fit the available records.
- Place: North Carolina, USA, perhaps Rowan County or Surry County
Marriage
- Wife: Hannah Crutchfield
- Date: 6 Mar 1810[6]
- Place: Surry County, North Carolina, USA
Children
- Children of George and Hannah were born either in Surry County, North Carolina or in Claiborne County, Tennessee. The sequence helps show when the family likely moved to Eastern Tennessee.
- Joshua Madison (Treece) Trease was born on April 2, 1810, in Surry County, North Carolina and Died 1874. Circa 1839/1840, he was in Tennessee[7]. Joshua married Nancy Mayes, who died on March 13, 1874, in Kellogg, Iowa, at the age of 63.
- John Treece was born in 1812 in Surry County, North Carolina. John passed away on April 24, 1867, in Claiborne County, Tennessee of Consumption contracted while in the military service during the Civil War.
- Lewis Jefferson Treece was born 1814 in Surry County, North Carolina and died 1 Oct 1892 Chattanooga Tennessee[8]
- probably circa 1815: family moved to Tennessee
- William C Treece was born about 1817, in Tennessee. He died about April 1854 in Claiborne County, Tennessee
- Caroline Treece born on September 13, 1823, in Claiborne County, Tennessee. Died 5 Sep 1900 Tazewell, Claiborne County, Tennessee. Caroline married Jerold Daniel Mayes (1814–1903). Her mother Hannah lived with her family after Hannah's husband George passed away[9].
- George has no other known children. In the 1830 census, there are no daughters over 10 years old. However, any child born in the range 1811-1816 or so could have been out of the house by 1830 and escaped notice.
Residence
- 1810
- Surry County, North Carolina, USA[1]
- Note that Surry County was formed from Rowan County in 1771[10].
- The specific location in Surry County is not known. On the same page of the 1810 census, there is a Michael Wall who continued to live in Surry County. It may be possible to deduce a location from available records and associations.
- No land records for George have been found in North Carolina. Michael Treece (1759-1840) was a land owner in Surry County, and at one point was taxed on 250 acres. Michael owned at least two different tracts of land, one of which was at the junction of Tom's Creek and the Ararat River. A second property of Michael was slightly east of that property, nearer the Stokes County border, on Grassy Creek. It's possible that George lived on one of these properties, though no evidence has been found.
- 1814
- Place: North Carolina, USA
- Son Lewis Jefferson was born in North Carolina in 1814
- 1818
- Place: Tennesee, probably Claiborne County, Tennessee, USA
- Son William C was born in Tennessee in 1818
- 1830
- Place: Claiborne County, Tennessee, USA [2]
- This is the last census record he is found on.
Death
- Date: before 16 Jan 1840
- He is mentioned in John Crutchfield's will establishing his death before Jan 16, 1840[11]
- Hanna is listed without George on the 1840 census.
- Place: Claiborne County, Tennessee, USA
Research notes
- There are two descendants of George who match each other on Y DNA and are in the Treece DNA project at FTDNA. One is a descendant of George's son Joshua Madison. The other is a descendant of Lewis Jefferson. These are represented in Lineage 04 in the project[12] The project results can be found at https://www.familytreedna.com/public/Treecedna?iframe=ycolorized. Other patrilineal descendants of George should be able to check for this haplotype. As of 10 Nov 2021, there are few matching testers in the FTDNA database. One matching the surname Davis, listing an ancestor in Surry County, North Carolina, might be of interest.
- George's son John Treece has descendants who match the CTP DNA Study. John's father is thought to be a Wall based on the Y DNA and autosomal DNA matches. Since Michael Treece is represented by testers in Lineage 01 of the Treece project, along with the matching descendants discussed above, it looks like John is not the biological son of George and is not a patrilineal descendant of Michael. On the 1810 census in Surry County, North Carolina, both Michael and George, along with Michael Wall and William Wall (same page). At this time, no firm connection to those particular Walls has been established.
- Henry Fricks, who shows up in some land transaction documents for Treeces and in George's marriage records[13], is likely the husband of George's sister, Mary.
- Can we figure out where George lived in Surry County? From the timeline, it appears he migrated to eastern Tennessee about the same time as Michael Treece, circa 1816, but no record of land ownership in Surry County has been found.
