Biography
Edward Ernest Joseph Spring was born on 24 April 1889 in Ballarat, Victoria, Australia, the youngest of seven children to Irish-born parents Helen (Sheppard) Spring and William Spring.[1][2] Helen had migrated to Australia in 1857 as a child, and William as a teenager in 1861.
He was awarded a Bachelor of Medicine from the University of Melbourne in 1910.[3]
In January 1912, he was resident medical officer at Melbourne Hospital.[4] By February 1912, he announced his resignation from Melbourne Hospital, with an intention to take up a private practice.[5] In November 1915 he purchased the medical practice of George Dixon Dickinson, not long after George's death.[6]
Edward married Margaret Maud Rennick on 7 October 1914, at the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Hawthorn, Victoria.[7][8] The groomsmen were Mr. Dick Dowden and Dr. W. Rennick.[9]
Edward and Madge had four children:
- Margaret Rennick Spring (1916–1997)[10][11]
- Edward Ernest Spring (1917–2012)[12][13]
- William Rennick Spring (1919–2011)[14][15]
- Ruth Spring (1926–)[16][17]
In 1948, Edward was working as a medical practitioner at a practice on Sydney Road in Coburg, Victoria.[18] Dr John Whitehead succeeded to the practice in 1956.[19]
Margaret died in March 1973.[20]
Edward died on 28 September 1974 in Malvern, Victoria, aged 85 years.[21][22][23]
