James Patrick Hughes was born on May 12, 1839 in County Armagh, Northern Ireland, United Kingdom, son of Edward Hughes (<1799–1866) and Catherine Murphy (1799–1885).^[1]

James (29) married Ellen Berrigan (21) (born on July 1, 1847 in Prince Edward Island; daughter of Nicholas Berrigan and [mother]) on August 25, 1868 in Lot 65, Queens, Prince Edward Island, Canada. Their son was James Patrick Hughes (1885–1952).

James died on May 1, 1920 in Prince Edward Island, Canada, aged 80. He was buried in Saint Malachy's Parish Cemetery, Kinkora, Prince County, Prince Edward Island.^[1]
