About Cleiophane
Formula:
ZnS
Name:
The name was proposed before 1851 by Thomas Nuttall and first appeared in print in a publication by Thomas H. Henry, who credited Nuttall as the discoverer. The etymology is uncertain, though it is thought to derive from the Greek κλέος (“fame”) and φαίνεσθαι (“to appear”).
First Recorded Locality:
Cleiophane is colorless to white or green sphalerite due to low contents of Fe2+ and Mn2+. Yellow gemmy sphalerite is called "golden sphalerite."
First reported from Franklin, Franklin Mining District, Sussex Co., New Jersey, USA.
