A large open-cut mine, active from the late 1980s to 1996, known for a wealth of secondary mineral species, that worked the remaining oxide portion of the southern end of the Broken Hill Lode.

The pit was named after the old Kintore shaft, which was part of the Central mine (Block 9). The Kintore open cut and Block 14 open cut, a kilometer to the north along the line of lode, were operated from the late 1980s to 1996 by Normandy Mining. Normandy Mining was subsequently taken over by Newmont Mining and then ceased operations in Broken Hill.

The Kintore open pit encompassed the old Kintore shaft along with various other old workings, including the Block 10 mine and much of the Central Mine (Block 9) and a portion of the [Broken] Proprietary Mine workings (Blocks 9-11). See http://www.mindat.org/loc-23201.html for more discussion.

When Normandy shut down the oxide mining operation in 1996, the various historic mining claims in the central portion of the Broken Hill Lode were consolidated into a single mining claim, CML 7, by Consolidated Broken Hill Ltd. They had a plan to mine the Western Lode from declines in the bottom of the Kintore and Blackwood pits. It never happened. They became CBH Resources and instead reopened the old Endeavour deposit north of Cobar. CBH in turn got taken over by a Japanese company, Toho Resources, who then went back into Broken Hill in 2012 and developed the Western Lode from the north end of the old Proprietary mine lease, calling it the Rasp Mine. This mine works entirely in sulfide mineralization, although some stockpiles of oxidized and transitional oxide-sulfide remain.

Note: Material from this open cut (and also the Block 14 open cut), which was fairly rich in secondary minerals, could be collected in the 1990s on designated dumps on the mine site of the Pinnacles mine (http://www.mindat.org/loc-5752.html).

Description: In Birch and van der Heydon (1997) tocornalite was described as "seams of a compact canary-yellow mineral were found with iodargyrite in kaolin-rich lode rocks from 3 Lens, on the 260m N level in Kintore. The mineral rapidly darkens to greenish grey then dark grey after exposure to sunlight for several minutes. These properties are similar to those of the poorly described silver mercury iodide tocornalite".
