Girl Power + Football = :)
I love it when two or more of my favorite things come together, like books & zombies or sci fi & bad-ass chicks or sci fi & romance or movies & zombies . . .
But it's not every day I get bad-ass chicks & NFL football. Tonight I was able to watch the first woman ref officiate in the NFL. Shannon Eastin is definitely one of the most awesome ladies I've come across in a long time. Sure, she's getting her chance because of the lock-out & normally would have one more year of college officiating before she'd be eligible to ref in the NFL (click the link,-it's really cool, i promise), but conditions & caveats don't take away the fact that she did it. Had I known beforehand I would've watched every down, but at the time I thought it was just another Chargers v. Packers game so I watched the bookending quarters. If I hadn't spent the rest of the time writing I'd feel like I seriously missed out. As it is, I'll make it a priority to find out if she, or any other bad-ass chicks, happen to be officiating while everyone waits for the inevitable return of the usual suspects.
I love football. I used to have a picture of myself at about 18-20 months old wearing a frilly dress (I heard it was pink, but the pic was b&w so who really knows?), ruffly socks & black patent-leather Mary Janes, sitting on my dad's lap watching football. Yes, watching. Motives aside, he spent a lot of time explaining the finer points of football to me during my first fifteen years of life. Mine is a football family (my dad's brother was Career NFL the way another uncle was Career Navy) & even if that's about the only thing I claim from my paternal lineage, it's more than enough. For reasons that may or may not be obvious to the casual reader, I miss the days when games went on for (what seemed like) twice as long, and it was as likely the camera would focus on the cheerleaders as on the sidelines during any time outs or similar slow times. Despite my general lack of affection for football officials in general, female refs would enhance my enjoyment of the game on many levels.
One more thing, then I'll get back to the NFL network (which I can't really afford but am treating myself to this year anyway). I've given a lot of thought to words lately, specifically words I like and use frequently. Since I used a word that some women still consider negative while cheering for a pioneering gal, it's only right i think about it a little before committing it to the tubes. Chick. I've been on the receiving end of a lot of crap for using this word. I've used it forever and will probably continue to do so. To me, it's just like the word "girl" -- sometimes it's appropriate & sometimes it's not. I like to think I know the difference. Just sayin'.
