This is a draft for an upcoming proposal I am working on. Due to the significance of this proposal, help working everything out would be appreciated.

Current Proposals[edit]

Part 1: Standardize documentation of all media appearances[edit]

This is part 1 of a large set of changes, which is spread across multiple proposals due to the large number of options to vote for. The winning options from this part of the proposal will not go into effect until the future proposals have finished.

Recently, I started thinking about how inconsistently coverage of non-game Kirby media has handled on the wiki. Kirby: Right Back at Ya! and the Kirby novel series are the only two series that have their own sections on game-focused articles, while all other media, such as other videos and literature, mobile apps, merchandise, etc. is either relegated to trivia, galleries, or not covered outside of their own pages at all. Therefore, I am suggesting a couple changes to the wiki, in order to more consistently and extensively cover all non-game media on existing pages.

Standardize media category sections[edit]

The first part of this proposal is to standardize sections for appearances outside of the games. I think that there should be a consistent way to cover noteworthy appearances of characters, locations, objects, etc. outside the games on the main subject's article, in one or more unique/combined sections. What I consider noteworthy is any unique appearance of the subject. This would mainly follow the existing (unwritten?) rules on how to handle game appearances, include all unique appearances in media.

After many discussions in the Discord server, myself and others have come up with three different categories to split appearances across all forms of media between. These are:

  • Game appearances - The main Kirby series as already extensively documented on the wiki, and possibly other types of games depending on the results of the second part of this proposal
  • Adaptation appearances - A wiki-specific definition of the word will be used as defined by a policy, in order to include the "main" pieces of Kirby side media, specifically animation and literature
  • Other appearances - Everything else

The following is a non-exhaustive and subject-to-change list of examples of the different subjects that would be covered in these three categories:

Games
  • All Kirby series video games
  • Other games, depending on the results of the second part of this proposal:
    • Canceled video games
    • Browser games
    • Crossover games
    • Tabletop games
Adaptations
Other

What I think should be excluded would be completely unnoteworthy appearances, such as:

Any noteworthy exceptions to these examples could discussed case-by-case.

Note that, while the order of the primary "Game appearances -> Adaptation appearances -> Other appearances" category sections likely won't be changed, for certain pages, the order in which these categories are covered will be different if the page is primarily focused on one of the categories that would otherwise come later in the order. For example, Escargoon's page will still cover all of his info from the anime in the primary sections that already exist there before his minor game appearance in Kirby Mass Attack, since the page is primarily focused on his anime appearance, as proven by the opening paragraphs, anime character infobox, and other primary sections ("Personality" and "Relationships") focusing on his role in the anime.

I (with help from some people in the Discord server) have come up with four different options on how this change could be handled:

  1. Alongside the "Game appearances" section, split non-game appearances between "Adaptation appearances" and "Other appearances" sections.
  2. Alongside the "Game appearances" section, add all noteworthy non-game appearances to just an "Other appearances" section. This section will not be split between the three new categories mentioned above.
  3. Alongside the "Game appearances" section, add all non-game appearances to an "Other appearances" section, but split this info between sub-sections of "Adaptation appearances" and "Miscellaneous appearances".
  4. Add all game and non-game appearances to an "Appearances" section, but split this info between sub-sections of "Game appearances", "Adaptation appearances", and "Other appearances".
  5. Continue only primarily covering game, anime, and novel appearances (A.K.A. change nothing).
Option 1: Four sections: "Game appearances", "Adaptation appearances" and "Other appearances"
Option 2: Two sections: "Game appearances" and "Other appearances"
Option 3: Two sections: "Game appearances" and "Other appearances", with the latter split into "Adaptation appearances" and "Miscellaneous appearances" sub-sections
Option 4: One section: "Appearances", split into "Game appearances", "Adaptation appearances", and "Other appearances" sub-sections
Option 5: Continue only covering the games, anime and novels

Discussion[edit]

Standardize ordering of media sub-sections[edit]

Currently, while appearances across all forms of media are typically sorted chronologically on the wiki, there has been no decision made on how exactly this works if a subject is only introduced to said media long after its release, to the point where another piece of media has already been released. This will be important to standardize if the first change in this proposal were to go into effect.

For example: The first volume in the Kirby novel series released in 2013. The first book in the Find Kirby!! series released in 2019. However, Bugzzy's first appearance in Find Kirby!! was in 2019, which predates his first appearance in the Kirby novel series in 2020. Now, in the "Adaptation appearances" section of Bugzzy's article, there are two options to choose from:

  1. Sort appearances chronologically based on the media's first release date. In Bugzzy's article, this would place the Kirby novel series section before the Find Kirby!! section, since the Kirby novel series began first. This order of media sections would stay consistent between all other articles as well, but would mean that the history of Bugzzy's adaptation appearances on his own article is out of order.
  2. Sort appearances chronologically based on the debut of the article's subject in the media. In Bugzzy's article, this would place the Find Kirby!! section before the Kirby novel series section, since Bugzzy appeared in the Find Kirby!! series first. This would put the history of Bugzzy's adaptation appearances on his own article in the correct order, but would mean that the order in which the different media sub-sections are listed is inconsistent between all articles.
Option 1: Sort chronologically based on media's release date
Option 2: Sort chronologically based on the subject's debut within media
Neutral

Discussion[edit]

Part 2: Unique game appearances[edit]

This is part 2 of a large set of changes, which is spread across multiple proposals due to the large number of options to vote for. This will likely be the last part.

While there is a generally agreed upon set of games part of the core Kirby series, there are a notable number of edge cases where either no decision on how to document them has been made, or there have been discussions to change how they are documented. This part of the multi-part proposal will cover multiple very similar changes related to this.

Note that some of the possible options to vote for may have a couple exceptions (such as unused music tracks still being documented in the List of internal names of Kirby series music, even if the option to not cover them in other pages is voted for in Change 2). This proposal primarily focus on the general standards across the wiki, and any specific exceptions may be discussed separately.

Change 1: Canceled games[edit]

This change will standardize how subjects' appearances within canceled games (such as various enemies' appearances in Kirby for Nintendo GameCube) are covered. I am suggesting the following options:

  1. Cover canceled game appearances within "Game appearances" as regular Kirby games.
  2. Cover canceled game appearances within "Game appearances", in a sub-section specifically for canceled games.
  3. Cover canceled game appearances within "Game appearances", in a sub-section for both canceled games and unused appearances within released games (see #Change 2: Unused appearances in released games).
  4. Cover canceled game appearances within "Game appearances", in a sub-section for all miscellaneous games (except those voted to have their own sections)
  5. Cover canceled game appearances within "Other appearances".
  6. Don't cover canceled game appearances at all, outside of the articles specifically for these canceled games.
Option 1: Cover canceled game appearances in "Game appearances" like any other game
Option 2: Cover canceled game appearances in "Game appearances" in a sub-section for canceled games
Option 3: Cover canceled game appearances in "Game appearances" in a sub-section for canceled games and other unused appearances
Option 4: Cover canceled game appearances in "Game appearances" in a sub-section for miscellaneous games
Option 5: Cover canceled game appearances in "Other appearances"
Option 6: Don't cover canceled game appearances
Neutral

Change 1 discussion[edit]

Change 2: Unused appearances in released games[edit]

This change will standardize how unused appearances of subjects within released games (such as "Candy Mountain"'s appearance in the files of Kirby Star Allies) will be covered. I am suggesting the same options as Change 1:

  1. Cover unused game appearances within "Game appearances" as regular Kirby games.
  2. Cover unused game appearances within "Game appearances", in a sub-section specifically for unused appearances.
  3. Cover unused game appearances within "Game appearances", in a sub-section for both unused appearances and canceled games (see #Change 1: Canceled games).
  4. Cover unused game appearances within "Game appearances", in a sub-section for all miscellaneous games (except those voted to have their own sections)
  5. Cover unused game appearances within "Other appearances".
  6. Don't cover unused game appearances at all, outside of the articles specifically for these games.
Option 1: Cover unused game appearances in "Game appearances" like any other game
Option 2: Cover unused game appearances in "Game appearances" in a sub-section for canceled games
Option 3: Cover unused game appearances in "Game appearances" in a sub-section for canceled games and other unused appearances
Option 4: Cover unused game appearances in "Game appearances" in a sub-section for miscellaneous games
Option 5: Cover unused game appearances in "Other appearances"
Option 6: Don't cover unused game appearances
Neutral

Change 2 discussion[edit]

Change 3: Browser games[edit]

The Kirby series has a fair amount of browser games (many of which are not yet properly covered on the wiki), which are not considered part of the core Kirby series. Once again, I am offering a similar set of options to the first two changes:

  1. Cover browser game appearances within "Game appearances" as regular Kirby games.
  2. Cover browser game appearances within "Game appearances", in a sub-section specifically for browser games.
  3. Cover browser game appearances within "Game appearances", in a sub-section for all miscellaneous games (except those voted to have their own sections)
  4. Cover browser game appearances within "Other appearances".
  5. Don't cover browser game appearances at all, outside of the articles specifically for these games.
Option 1: Cover browser game appearances in "Game appearances" like any other game
Option 2: Cover browser game appearances in "Game appearances" in a sub-section for canceled games
Option 3: Cover browser game appearances in "Game appearances" in a sub-section for canceled games and other unused appearances
Option 4: Cover browser game appearances in "Game appearances" in a sub-section for miscellaneous games
Option 5: Cover browser game appearances in "Other appearances"
Option 6: Don't cover browser game appearances
Neutral

Change 3 discussion[edit]

Change 4: Crossover games[edit]

One final type of video game which is inconsistently documented on the wiki is crossover games. This mainly includes the Super Smash Bros. series; there have already been discussions about whether or not these games should be listed among Kirby games. This also includes other official appearances of Kirby content within other franchises, including Taiko no Tatsujin, Donkey Konga, etc., most of which are currently only covered on the List of references to the Kirby series page.

  1. Cover all crossover game appearances in "Game appearances" like regular Kirby games.
  2. Cover all crossover game appearances in "Game appearances", in a sub-section specifically for non-Kirby games.
  3. Cover all crossover game appearances within "Game appearances", in a sub-section for all miscellaneous games (except those voted to have their own sections)
  4. Cover all crossover game appearances in "Other appearances".
  5. Continue exclusively covering Super Smash Bros. series appearances like we (mostly) do currently.
Option 1: Cover all crossover game appearances like regular Kirby games in "Game appearances"
Option 2: Cover all crossover game appearances in "Game appearances" in a sub-section for non-Kirby games
Option 3: Cover all crossover game appearances in "Game appearances" in a sub-section for miscellaneous games
Option 4: Cover all crossover game appearances in "Other appearances"
Option 5: Continue only covering Super Smash Bros. appearances
Neutral

Change 4 discussion[edit]

Change 5: Arcade games[edit]

Three arcade games are listed on the wiki as "other games": Kirby: Sparkling Medal Land, Kirby: Magical Tower of Medal Land, and Kirby: PakuPaku Gourmet Race. I don't have a lot of knowledge about these, but they are not considered part of the core Kirby series, and seem to feature varying levels of interactivity. The options are the same as usual:

  1. Cover arcade game appearances in "Game appearances" like regular Kirby games.
  2. Cover arcade game appearances in "Game appearances", in a sub-section specifically for arcade games.
  3. Cover arcade game appearances within "Game appearances", in a sub-section for all miscellaneous games (except those voted to have their own sections)
  4. Cover arcade game appearances in "Other appearances".
  5. Don't cover arcade game appearances at all, outside of the articles specifically for these arcade games.
Option 1: Cover arcade game appearances like regular Kirby games in "Game appearances"
Option 2: Cover arcade game appearances in "Game appearances" in a sub-section for arcade games
Option 3: Cover arcade game appearances in "Game appearances" in a sub-section for miscellaneous games
Option 4: Cover arcade game appearances in "Other appearances"
Option 5: Don't cover arcade game appearances
Neutral

Change 5 discussion[edit]

Change 6: Tabletop games[edit]

Tabletop games (such as Kirby no Copy-toru! and Kirby's Sweets Party) are obviously games, but not video games, which is currently the only kind of game covered in the "Game appearances" section. So, here are the options:

  1. Cover tabletop game appearances in "Game appearances" like regular Kirby games.
  2. Cover tabletop game appearances in "Game appearances", in a sub-section specifically for tabletop games.
  3. Cover tabletop game appearances within "Game appearances", in a sub-section for all miscellaneous games (except those voted to have their own sections)
  4. Cover tabletop game appearances in "Other appearances".
  5. Don't cover tabletop game appearances at all, outside of the articles specifically for these tabletop games.
Option 1: Cover tabletop game appearances like regular Kirby games in "Game appearances"
Option 2: Cover tabletop game appearances in "Game appearances" in a sub-section for tabletop games
Option 3: Cover tabletop game appearances in "Game appearances" in a sub-section for miscellaneous games
Option 4: Cover tabletop game appearances in "Other appearances"
Option 5: Don't cover tabletop game appearances
Neutral

A Kirby ability made when Kirby inhales a sword-wielding foe or a sword itself. Doing so provides Kirby with a rapid sword slash, a jumping sword spin, or even the energy-beam blast of the Final Sword. It wouldn't be a stretch to say that this is the #1 Copy Ability in terms of accessibility. Kirby's Adventure

Trophy
American English:
That green cap sure does make Kirby look heroic, doesn't it? Maybe wearing it just inspires Kirby, but while he's wearing it, he gets all kinds of neat moves, like Spin Slash, Multisword Attack, and Sword Dive. He's even able to pull off these moves in the air, on the ground, or underwater!"

British English:
Kirby looks like a pretty courageous hero in that green cap, doesn't he? Indeed, this Kirby is a master of sword-swishing, fending off enemies with the powerful Spin Slash, the rapid Multisword Attack and the stylish Sword Dive. If that wasn't impressive enough, he can also use these moves on land, in mid-air AND underwater. Beautiful!
