The Hobo Love Tour in St. Louis

Waltzing Matilda and Emchy are thrilled to be bringing their own brand of drinking songs and accordion lore to Pop's Blue Moon in St. Louis. Sharing the stage with them is the charming, illustrious and kick ass musician Pete Kartsounes who is and has been a full timin', singin'/songwritin', mountain hikin', dog walkin', Colorado dwellin', festival goin', bluegrass pickin', ramblin' man.

Pop's is at 5249 Pattison Ave, St Louis, Missouri. See you there!

Who the heck is the Hobo Love Tour?

The Hobo Love Tour is an accordion poetry tour adventure.

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and ghouls, tramps and tricksters and traingels – step right up and get ready to be amazed by Waltzing Matilda the One Beer Prophet (formerly known as J. Wilber and Reverend Jess Duggan) and Cindy Emch (aka Emchy) of Vagabondage and Rhubarb Whiskey as they embark on the Hobo Love Tour!

That's right, folks – these two talented tattooed ladies are following the harvest moon during the month of September, starting out in Beer City and then following the curve of the big river down to St. Louis and New Orleans.  Then, they'll be cutting back east to descend upon Louisville, Kentucky and, of course, the City of Big Shoulders.  They'll be spilling drinks and breaking hearts through the rust belt and the south.  Whatever you do, don't miss this daring duo!  It's a once-in-a-lifetime experience that you'll never forget!

Waltzing Matilda

Waltzing Matilda hails from deep in the heart of the Rust Belt, a melancholy yet ruckus-raising clowngirl if ever there was one!  See! her do pseudo-stripteases to the sounds of Dixieland jazz!  Hear! her squeeze and strum her twisted take on Americana!  Listen! to her cut up jackpots, yarns spun about her traveling adventures!  Watch! as she makes you laugh and cry with her silly hobo-clown antics!

You can hear her songs at
myspace.com/onebeerprophetand find all of her information and ephemera at www.sadandbeautifulworld.net

Emchy

Emchy comes from the lonesome, fog-drenched port of San Francisco, an accordion-playing beauty beyond compare!  Hear! her play songs of hard-drinkin' and hell-raisin' on her accordion!  Listen! to her share with you poetry that'll set fire to your soul!  Watch! her closely, for she has surprises in store!

She is the nefarious accordion mastermind behind the bands Vagabondage and Rhubarb Whiskey. Her adventures with Vagabondage are legendary including performances at the Hubba Hubba Revue (2008 Best of the Bay Variety Show), and other sordid venues in California.  You can hear her songs on the myspace pages of
Vagabondage & Rhubarb Whiskey.

A Good Deed Anyone Can Do

I just came back from 7-Eleven via my neighborhood firehouse. Y'all might think of doing the same.

I went to the 7-Eleven because it happens to be across the street from the firehouse, but you could go to any grocery or convenience store nearby. I dropped about 26 bucks on one of every flavor of Gatorade in the store and took them across the street to give to the firefighters.

It's ninety-something degrees here in St. Louis today. Y'know how great a sweet, cold drink feels after a time in the sun on a day like this? Think how even more so it would be for those men and women after responding to a call, on a day like this.

For me it's personal. My dad's parents and my great-grandfather bought a house in this neighborhood in the 1940s. My dad and uncle grew up here. My brother and sister and I grew up here. I moved back to this neighborhood and am raising my own sons here. Firefighters from this station have been standing watch over members of my family through five generations and sixty-plus years.

I hope it can be personal for you, too. Where we run away from, they run toward. What we run out of, they run into. And here in St. Louis, they don't do it for much.

So I bought 'em a buncha bottles of Gatorade on a hot summer's day. Can I get you to do likewise for the men and women who stand watch over your home?

hello

Is this community alive at all?

I'm moving to St. Louis in a couple weeks, just put a deposit down on an apartment in the loop. Just figured I'd say hi, and solicit any suggestions on things to do in the city. Not that I expect to have much trouble finding entertainment.

Pin Up Bowl

Meh.

I've been there a few times to get a beer (never to bowl) and wasn't really impressed with the place. Yeah, the architecture is nifty and you have to love a place that beams Adult Swim on projected TVs above bowling lanes, but it just had this "too cool for you" feel to it.

Well, I figured it was just me - maybe I'd had a bad day all the times I'd been there. So, after getting a nifty gift certificate from parkview properties, I decided to host a bunch of friends for a few games while we watched the Rams play.

Never again.

First of all: 2 lanes for 2 hours on a Sunday afternoon costs $160. $160. That's quite a chunk of change, and it doesn't even include shoe rental ($3 per person). I have no problem paying a premium for good things, but they had damn well better be worth it. This includes getting zero attitude from the waitstaff and reasonably functioning lanes, neither of which we got. The fact that we were the only people there only compounds things.

I don't feel like going into detail right now - ask me about it in comments if you're interested.

In short - forget Pin Up Bowl. Saratoga Lanes isn't far away and you'll get far far more bang for your buck.
