So, we all know what Rapunzel's art looks like.

But the longer I think about it, the more I think that the closing credits are supposed to be specifically Eugene's art style. Let's start with the map:

It's sparse, not too detailed, and includes things like a picture of Maximus labeled with "avoid this' and an arrow in the ground labeled "got shot here." If it was a pre-existing map, he'd have more pictures of trees to contend with, not a piece of parchment that's clearly being filled in as it goes.

Also, the art during the credits are all things that he was present for or knows well, even if he wasn't involved.

There's even a few things that didn't make it into the movie!

So given this, I say that if Claire Keane is the official artistic hand of Rapunzel, Shiyoon Kim is the official artistic hand of Eugene Fitzherbert. (And that the series blatantly got wrong/is not canon-compliant with how well he draws.)

At the end of Kingdom dance, Rapunzel seems to get startled and detaches herself from Eugene and then they smile at each other. What was that about? 🤔

I actually have a whole analysis of this! Not that precise moment, but this has to do with the fact that Rapunzel was raised not to seek physical affection. (This post is my Tumblr legacy. Look at how many notes!)

To quote that part of the post linked above:

In fact, the first time she realizes she’s touching him, and he’s touching her, and there’s affection and enjoyment buzzing between them, she’s the first to pull away.
She’s alarmed at first, then apologetic and sheepish. Sorry I was touching you, Eugene. And he politely takes a step back, tuned in to her discomfort and giving her a little more space.

This entire interaction is just another step, another example, of Rapunzel feeling like she's not allowed to seek physical affection, and has to be offered it before she can take it.

I also have a follow up post (not nearly as popular) that addresses the "I've Got a Dream" sequence and her relationship to the Pub Thugs.

Imagine a female Pub Thug could have been a potential new friend for Cassandra 😭

Why Cassandra? Why not Rapunzel? I mean, I know Cassandra doesn't have any other female friends besides Rapunzel, but Rapunzel doesn't have any other female friends besides Cassandra, either, because the showrunner couldn't be bothered to involve more female characters who actually had lasting impact on the story.

Besides, I would hate for a female Pub Thug to be the token Smart One in the Snuggly Duckling just so that they'd make someone who Cassandra could actually tolerate. The Pub Thugs are, as a unit, pretty unintelligent, and I say let more women characters fill that role, as well.

My personal headcanon is that they were all there for their bi-monthly get-together. But the ones we see in the Series are just always there.

Avatar

Headcanon whatever you like, but the canon of the series is that they didn't use that vast majority of the Pub Thugs, even those named in the song. (Not sure how the villagers in the series could be mistaken as the Pub Thugs, when they have very distinctive looks, and the unnamed Coronans are mostly conventionally attractive.)

When Brad Garrett made himself unavailable to play Hook Hand on a regular basis, instead of making him a series-only brother, they could have used one of the many other already existing Pub Thugs.

I 50000% get why they needed to pare down the number of Pub Thugs from the ones that were in the movie, but it's really a shame, because there's some very iconic Looks amongst them.

Not to mention the ones with names that didn't make it into the series!

Tor

Gunter

Bruiser (knits) and Killer (sews)

Fang (who we don't see, except for his puppets, so any of them could be Fang)

The guy with that shield is named Thorny (according to the art book)

I just noticed the big guy with the shaggy beard has a peg leg!

IDK, the Snuggly Duckling always seemed really empty in the series when it was only the Pub Thugs in there, because there weren't nearly enough of them. They had budget to make all these extras for various gangs, Challengers of the Brave, and townspeople in Vardaros, but they couldn't have made any of them be extra Pub Thugs?

Underrated leftist aspect of Tangled is how it portrays a bunch of violent criminals as human beings with non-violent hopes and aspirations that simply need to be nurtured in order to lift them out of a life of crime

Why did hook hand hated Eugene in the series was there something I miss in the movie or the show that explains why he hated him and if not then it feel a little weird and off that the choice to do that for no reason (also I just came up with a head cannon that maybe he did something to hook hand during the week long celebration in the movie and he doesn’t remember and so he never apologized and that why hook hand hate him idk what do you think)

Avatar

Hook Hand never really liked Eugene.

It was Rapunzel he warmed up to, not Eugene. He and the other Pub Thugs helped Eugene escape because he was going to help her, not for his own sake. "I'm malicious, mean, and scary." Eugene follows his rule, Rapunzel is the exception to his rule.

Like I said in this post yesterday, they’re just not vibing with him. And they never claim to be nice people, just multidimensional people. The rest of the Pub Thugs had the six months between the end of the movie and TBEA began to get to know Eugene better and start to like him more.

Why is it that in Tangled during “I’ve got a Dream” and Flynn Rider is singing his bit, the ruffians are only fully content once he says he wants to be surrounded by enormous piles of money.

First off, if you’re on an island that you own, tanned and rested and alone, why does he need money? Unless we’re to assume this is for traveling back to the mainland to get food and possible materials for repairs? Otherwise I would assume in his ideal paradise he needs contact with absolutely no one, but maybe that’s just the internal bias of wishing there was a world where we could live alone forever and be fine

Second off. How do I say that feels like capitalist propaganda without getting flamed.

Are you watching the movie or just listening to the song? Because in the actual film, they're more like waiting for him to finish his thought before they cheer.

(Should be queued up to his verse, for reference.)

Also, he literally did just steal one of Valdimir's ceramic unicorns right out of his hand. They're grumpy with him.

Not to say that you don't have a good point about the Disney Corporation putting capitalist propaganda into a cheerful song about dreams.

With the pause and the way it’s sung it feels like he finished his thought imo, it kinda feels like they threaten him into adding more though I guess you also could say they just wanted him to do it to then do the toss thing, but given their expressions it feels threatening, shrug. I was thinking of both but also the ceramic unicorn thing is a good point, rude of him

Yeah, he's not really the one who won them over, it was Rapunzel. Even after the song, when they're helping them escape, it's clearly her who they're enamored with. "Your dream stinks, I was talking to her." They're just not vibing with him. And they never claim to be nice people, just multidimensional people.

Even at the end of the movie, Maximus convinced them to help Eugene for Rapunzel's sake, not his own (though they seem to like him better because he wants to race to her rescue).

I love all these little potential adventures they conceived of. Some of them seem to have been developed into actual episodes!

Eugene wanted still, outside of Corona? - "The Eye of Pincosta"

Fighting a sea monster? - "The King and Queen of Hearts"

Someone getting bowed to by tribal folk? - I think this got turned into "King Pascal." I also think it might be relevant to this one:

Can you name all of Rapunzel’s crimes 😂

Avatar

Not off the top of my head, no. I'd have to go through the movie and entire series.

What was that? "What crimes did she commit in the movie?" you ask?

  • Assault and battery (hitting Eugene with the frying pan multiple times, well past what would be considered defending herself and her home)
  • Accessory to grand theft/treason (she hid the satchel containing the tiara, knowing he was a thief and had stolen it)
  • Resisting law enforcement (evading the guards in/after the Snuggly Duckling)
  • Obstructing law enforcement (hiding/hiding with Eugene in the kingdom)

Hell, just associating with a known thief (several known criminals, in fact) might have counted. Frederic was notoriously hard on criminals, after all.

I almost added "bribing a cop" to the list, but she didn't bribe Max, she sweet talked him into holding off on arresting Eugene (or allowing him to be arrested).

Hey, can we talk about what crimes Max has committed?
