The Mountain Goats recently made a song about a famous moment in found footage horror history that I've written about on here before. In 1985, a full 14 years before "The Blair Witch Project" introduced the mainstream to found footage horror, a really gory found footage movie called "Guinea Pig 2: Flower of Flesh and Blood" was released in Japan. This faux snuff film eventually made its way into the VHS tape trading underground of the United States, where, several years after its release, a copy found its way into the hands of a young actor by the name of Charlie Sheen.
Sheen watched the movie and, believing it to be a genuine version of the snuff film that it's pretending to be, alerted the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The FBI apparently took the movie seriously until they found a documentary about the making of the movie that detailed how they did their gore effects.

I lead the agents back to the screening room And in the dark, we watch the blood flowers bloom And then the credits seem to roll on forever I know people who can find out who put this thing together After a while, one of them said "Listen, Charlie, you're from Hollywood And the moving pictures aren't what they used to be, it's true But I'm not sure what you think the Bureau can do?" "Gentlemen, the camera doesn't lie How many more innocent women must die?"
There’s no containing him.

Watching the scene in Riffing (2029) where Rick Millin has vigorous yet tender sex with his ex-lover/former cohost on the set of the Alan Freeman Show
it's kind of a shame that talk shows are going extinct because there are so many unexplored possibilities for set designs. most talk show sets, if they look like anything, tend to look sort of like a living room. but there's so many other things they could sort of look like instead:
- the control room of a spaceship
- the floor of the senate
- an mc escher nightmare
- the cab of a pickup truck
- a haunted house
- the interior of an airplane
- docks on a foggy night
- rick's bar from casablanca
- candyland
- a jail cell
- the throne room in a palace
- a carnival
- a diner
- a cave
- a dusty attic
- the titanic
- a bank
- a pharaoh's tomb
- a freud-era therapist's office
- a bus station
- atlantis
- a locker room
- a bunker from wwi
- a butcher shop
- a monastery
- an old west saloon
- a barber shop
- a casino
- a dollhouse
- the dmv
- a construction site
- the war room from dr strangelove
- a desert oasis
- a hospital surgery room
not every single one of these is guaranteed to be a success, but wouldn't it be fun to try?
talked about this with some friends tonight and between the three of us we came up with some good additions
- a school classroom
- a school principal's office
- a sex dungeon
- the pearly gates
- a villain's lair
- some kind of factory
- mission control at nasa
- a moon base
- inside a convenience store
- just outside a convenience store
- a broadway diva's dressing room
- the deli counter at a grocery store (the host would be behind the counter and the interview would happen while they were slicing the guest's order)
- the lobby of a luxurious hotel
- the lobby of a dumpy motel
- a room at a dumpy motel
- the swimming pool at a dumpy motel
- the site of an occult sacrifice
- an airport
- a pirate ship
- a dairy farm, with lots of cheeses and big milk bottles
- a back alley
- a submarine
- a campground at night (instead of a desk they'd sit around a fake campfire; the guests would enter the set by climbing out of a tent)
- a library, complete with on-set librarian to shush them if they're getting too loud
- the set of cube (1997)
- a magical gnome village but in real scale so everything's way too tiny for the host and guests to use
- an old west saloon
- gettysburg after the battle, littered with corpses
- a high school gym
- a public pool
- an aquarium
- the parking lot of a suburban applebee's
Not quite the same thing but a few years ago I had an idea for a talk show that looked like this

@betweenthescarletmoon I know this was like a decade ago but this comment is driving me insane. They walked, man

It seems like a lot of conflict, on both micro and macro levels, derives from a widespread sentiment that every group deserves its own "space". My ethnic group deserves its own nation. My sexuality deserves its own online space that no other sexualities can interact with. Gamer spaces are being invaded by feminists!
And I don't know if that's 100% wrong, but like... it seems not 100% right. Or like one of those urges that's not really evil but always leads to bad outcomes regardless. It's not a given, at the very least! Like, all these complaints always come with the implicit claim of "everyone else gets their own space, why not me?" And I just don't think that's really true! Or like, maybe it's true sometimes but that doesn't make it some kind of moral law of the universe? You gotta rub shoulders with the outgroup sometimes, you know
