it's kind of a shame that talk shows are going extinct because there are so many unexplored possibilities for set designs. most talk show sets, if they look like anything, tend to look sort of like a living room. but there's so many other things they could sort of look like instead:

  • the control room of a spaceship
  • the floor of the senate
  • an mc escher nightmare
  • the cab of a pickup truck
  • a haunted house
  • the interior of an airplane
  • docks on a foggy night
  • rick's bar from casablanca
  • candyland
  • a jail cell
  • the throne room in a palace
  • a carnival
  • a diner
  • a cave
  • a dusty attic
  • the titanic
  • a bank
  • a pharaoh's tomb
  • a freud-era therapist's office
  • a bus station
  • atlantis
  • a locker room
  • a bunker from wwi
  • a butcher shop
  • a monastery
  • an old west saloon
  • a barber shop
  • a casino
  • a dollhouse
  • the dmv
  • a construction site
  • the war room from dr strangelove
  • a desert oasis
  • a hospital surgery room

not every single one of these is guaranteed to be a success, but wouldn't it be fun to try?

talked about this with some friends tonight and between the three of us we came up with some good additions

  • a school classroom
  • a school principal's office
  • a sex dungeon
  • the pearly gates
  • a villain's lair
  • some kind of factory
  • mission control at nasa
  • a moon base
  • inside a convenience store
  • just outside a convenience store
  • a broadway diva's dressing room
  • the deli counter at a grocery store (the host would be behind the counter and the interview would happen while they were slicing the guest's order)
  • the lobby of a luxurious hotel
  • the lobby of a dumpy motel
  • a room at a dumpy motel
  • the swimming pool at a dumpy motel
  • the site of an occult sacrifice
  • an airport
  • a pirate ship
  • a dairy farm, with lots of cheeses and big milk bottles
  • a back alley
  • a submarine
  • a campground at night (instead of a desk they'd sit around a fake campfire; the guests would enter the set by climbing out of a tent)
  • a library, complete with on-set librarian to shush them if they're getting too loud
  • the set of cube (1997)
  • a magical gnome village but in real scale so everything's way too tiny for the host and guests to use
  • an old west saloon
  • gettysburg after the battle, littered with corpses
  • a high school gym
  • a public pool
  • an aquarium
  • the parking lot of a suburban applebee's

it is genuinely mind-boggling how significant an effect on my life it would turn out to be when i made the decision to buy a something awful forums account at age 22 to gripe about my retail job

reasons i wish i was dating someone

  1. lonely
  2. horny
  3. would be more rested if i had to share a bed with someone who had a normal human sleep schedule

the thing about riffing on a movie while you're watching it is that you have to actually be funny
