A/N: Hi! So it's been a while, things have been somewhat rough in my personal life. My grandma died 2 weeks ago (i live with her and has been more of a mother to me then my grandma) so I didn't have the energy or the time to spend time on this fic.

"Sixteen," Jesper said. "Kaz said sixteen." He hadn't thought much about this when it had just been a name on a piece of paper. He was thinking about it now, sitting on the floor outside a room where a sixteen year old was sleeping off something that should not have happened to a sixteen year old, or anyone, or-
"Jesper."
"I'm fine."
Nina looked at him in the particular way she had that communicated, without words, that she had an extensive vocabulary and could deploy it if necessary but was choosing not to for now. "Okay," she said.
Wylan would definitely be a person that stress-bakes. The Crows learn quickly that if there are fresh stroopwafels on the table, something is wrong with him. Nina usually is the first to notice as the smell of the delicious baked goods lure her to the kitchen, she would snatch one before going to grab Jesper.

The first letter arrived at the tannery, which meant his father had found him already, which meant the labour board, which meant the name he'd put on the form because he hadn't thought quickly enough to put a different one, which meant he'd made a mistake before he'd even properly started. The foreman handed it to him at the end of a shift, squinting at the fine paper and the elaborate seal with an expression that was clearly recategorizing Wylan in real time. Wylan took it. He stood outside in the cold for a long time, holding it. The paper was heavy. Good paper, the kind his father bought in quantities, the kind that announced the importance of what was written on it before you'd read a single word. The seal was the Van Eck family seal, the one pressed into every document and letter and legal instrument that had passed through that house for three generations. He couldn't read it. He stood in the cold and held the unreadable words from his father, feeling the stone that lived permanently in his chest grow heavier, the way it always did when this specific thing happened, when the gap between what he could do and what the world required of him became impossible to step around or minimize or pretend wasn't there.
headcanon that when jesper was younger he kept his hair longer and colm would meticulously braid his hair for him (jesper never had the patience to do it himself) and it was a whole father-son bonding time/tradition thing
the reason that canon & post-canon jesper’s hair is always close-cropped is because when jesper came to kerch, he had to cut his hair short cause he had no one to braid it for him and he couldn’t take care of it properly because of it
I feel like later when he's been together with wylan a bit he would start growing it out again and wylan would braid it for him
