Acknowledging that “critical thinking” means “thinking about things in a thorough way from different perspectives” and not “finding every flaw in a thing and fixating on it until all the joy is gone” is so liberating.

It’s supposed to be about intellectual curiosity, not about finding ways to devalue things that aren’t perfect or that we personally dislike.

personally I'm annoyed by the socioeconomic conditions that made words like "unalive" necessary but simultaneously impressed by the linguistic adaptations young people have made to continue talking about important things while subject to those conditions and I think if you can't hold both of those thoughts in your head you might just be old man yelling at cloud

I’ve been seeing this clip of Zara Larsson floating around Twitter with people saying “body goals”, talking about how they need to lose weight to achieve this, so I need to tell y’all:

This isn’t a starving woman. Zara gets lots of cardio in because of that dancing, which keeps her lean, but those legs come from WEIGHT TRAINING.

Zara Larsson is going to the gym and hitting legs. Those quads? Bulgarian split squats, leg extensions. She’s doing deadlifts, leg abductors, squats. Those aren’t starving cardio bunny legs babe, those are the legs of a woman who lifts and eats food!!!!

You’re not going to get this body by starving yourself. You’re going to get this body with both cardio and weight training. Zara Larsson is eating all the calories she needs to survive, and then some. Proteins, carbs, fats. And then she’s going to the gym and lifting weights.

Even more:

Zara Larsson is going to live longer and better than most women because of this. Women (both cis and trans btw!) lose 3-8% of their muscle mass every decade after 30. After menopause this loss only accelerates.

With muscle loss comes bone density loss. Women are 4x more likely to get osteoporosis than men. Elderly women fall about as much as men, yet they’re ~75% of all SEVERE fall related injuries.

But you know how to prevent this? Eating enough food and lifting weights. Weight training at least 2-3x a week and getting plenty of protein in your diet significantly reduces your risk.

By eating and lifting, you’re not just looking good. You’re making sure that in a few decades, taking a tumble won’t shatter every bone in your body. You’re making sure that you can stand, lay down, bathe yourself, pick things up on your own.

Zara Larsson is (almost certainly) going to live longer and better than Ariana Grande, or any other woman starving herself thinner and who doesn’t weight train. She’s going to be an old lady that can pick up something from the floor when she drops it. That can stand, sit, lay down on her own. Whose hip won’t shatter like glass with a tiny fall.

Eating enough food and weight training will do that. Not ozempic, extreme dieting, and endless cardio.

The reason your snacks are unsatisfying is that you need both carb and protein.

Carb starts your engine, protein keeps it going.

No carb, engine don’t start. No protein, engine dies out fast.

Easy carb add on:

  • Cookie
  • Fruit (canned or fresh)
  • Chips
  • Piece of bread
  • Popcorn
  • Crackers

Easy protein add on:

  • Nuts
  • Spoonful of nut butter
  • Cheese
  • Roasted chickpea snacks
  • Glass of milk (dairy or non dairy)
  • Small canned sausages or similar

Sugar in there.

I am pleased by people messaging me telling me that after adding a carb or protein to their snacks or meals they feel more satisfied all day. Yes, my plan is working. People are getting through their days with less hangry.

It's the Royal Academy of Art Young Artist's Summer Show. One of my favourite exhibitions of the year. Like. Not only are the older kids insanely talented, the younger ones' artist statements will just punch you right in the face.
