idk i make this post every few months worded differently but I'm just so so sick of the popular opinion seeming to be that a character i like experiencing trauma i relate to is taboo and gross and fetishising. idk maybe some people just want to tell a story about a thing that happens to people. a lot. im going to start whining that any character with a dead parent is romanticising grief and wank off material for grief fetishists
also interesting that male characters with sexual trauma are almost always lauded as Progressive examples of Good Writing but you can't even point out the obvious signs that a female character in the exact same media has gone through the same thing without people crawling over each other to explain to you that actually that's shallow shock value writing so we should ignore it. because obviously a woman's trauma is only there for men to jerk off to and men's trauma is Real and worth exploring

Way too many people on here (but also in general) love making the act of protest sexual. "Writing horny fanfics is a form of protest against censorship". "Endorsing incest and pedophilia is pushing back against purity culture". "Placing dildos and sex toys outside an ICE facility, aka a place where women and girls of color are getting raped and impregnated by the agents, in order to protest, um well.... just to protest". I'm going to need people to take a moment and truly think about
- What censorship ACTUALLY is, and whose projects are actually at risk (usually queer stories, and the work of BIPOC struggling to make it to the mainstream without diminishing said stories)
- What purity culture actually means, what is often used to enforce it within the family, and WHO it actually impacts (hint: not your fucking incest pedo shotacon bullshit)
- Why everything has to always come back to sex. What is it about hearing people getting brutalized, taken from their homes, being wrongfully imprisoned, and being sexually assaulted that makes you think about making sexual innuendos and jokes?
The whole Wattpad users moving to Ao3 thing is so fucking funny to watch because why do Ao3 users have such an ego on them?
The same thing is going to happen every time there is a huge influx of users: some people will learn how to use it and stay and some people will never learn how to use it and have such a miserable time they'll leave. Sure, there will be some annoying and malicious comments from people who don't know how to filter, but god damn the way Ao3 users are acting like this is the fall of Ao3 or Wattpad users are some special scum of the Earth coming to invade their lands or something and we need to armor up and fight against them to ward them off.
The Wattpad users aren't oppressing you. You sound stupid. This is an overreaction. We all know Ao3 is firmly on the side of write whatever you want.
As someone who used Wattpad before moving to Ao3, I can't help but think about the teenager I was when I did and how I'm sure plenty of these Wattpad users moving over now are people who just want to read and write fanfiction and need a second to adjust to an archive set-up after using nothing but algorithms for most of their life.
