this post makes me feel a complex mixture of love for the people around me and consternation about what "patriotism" entails politically and ethically

imagine being a criminal in gotham doing your criminal thing and it’s 2:45am and you see a shadow towering over you and you’re like yeah cool it’s batman i have a few new toys i bought off ebay that i’m pretty sure the joker was auctioning for 12p including shipping. and then you turn around and batman’s there alright, stupid bat ears and all, let’s see if this ends with you on gotham general’s porch or comically tied around a lamp post with a sticky note on your forehead for the police. but. you notice batman is smiling. even worse it’s not the bad creepy smile you’ve heard about, the one like he was asked by the school photographer to show some teeth for picture day before he unleashes some mortal kombat left arrow right arrow, up, up, A, A, B, left arrow moves. it’s a genuinely warm smile. friendly. naturally charming even. and you’re pretty sure that’s not how it works. what is going on mr. bat. did a superman enemy decide to play tourist again with poor gotham city after the scheduled wednesday metropolis kidnapping went without a hitch and now you’ve got some brainiac type of shapeshifter in your midst? could that be it?

and then Possibly Brainiac Batman cracks a joke and it’s kinda funny. if you told bob about it he’d laugh and bob never laughs so that means it’s legit. bob’s a dick. and then Could Be Brainiac Batman does a little whirl in the air before landing in front of you with a flourish. it’s kind of very good actually, there was no leg shaking at landing or anything. that’s impressive that takes some real skill. and it starts clicking. the grace. the poise. the talent. the panache. the lull in the air giving a taste of the entailing vexation of what you know is about to be one of most annoying fights of your life because this kid has never shut up in his life no matter what

The soil testing equipment on Curiosity makes a buzzing noise and the pitch of the noise changes depending on what part of an experiment Curiosity is performing, this is the way Curiosity sings to itself.

So some of the finest minds currently alive decided to take incredibly expensive important scientific equipment and mess with it until they worked out how to move in just the right way to sing Happy Birthday, then someone made a cake on Curiosity’s birthday and took it into Mission control so that a room full of brilliant scientists and engineers could throw a birthday party for a non-autonomous robot 225 million kilometres away and listen to it sing the first ever song sung on Mars*, which was Happy Birthday.

This isn’t a sad story, this a happy story about the ridiculousness of humans and the way we love things. We built a little robot and called it Curiosity and flung it into the star to go and explore places we can’t get to because it’s name is in our nature and then just because we could, we taught it how to sing.

That’s not sad, that’s awesome.

*this is different from the first song ever played on mars (Reach For The Stars by Will.I.Am) which happened the year before, singing is different from playing

BON "COMEUPPANCE" THEORY

Alright, perhaps calling this a "theory" is a bit disingenuous, it's more like a thinly veiled hunch, but I still want to talk about it.

In short: I believe that Jack is one of two spirits possessing Bon the Hare, the other being the ambiguous "Bon". Jack did something (perhaps intentionally, perhaps not) that resulted in "Bon" dying. "Bon" later trapped Jack inside the Bon animatronic with him and is forcing him to watch as he systematically kills his family and friends as a form of revenge.

As unlikely as that might sound, I think there is a lot of evidence to support this line of thinking. First and foremost, Jack is absolutely possessing Bon to some degree, that is neigh impossible to deny at this point. Even if you somehow don't think that, just indulge me whilst you're reading this.

Okay? Okay.

First and foremost, it's likely that Jack killed someone in the past, and I think that person is "Bon."

Compare "Bon" to the deer in the second image. Is it not suspicious that both he and the deer bare identical wounds? Jack shooting the deer could absolutely be symbolic of him taking his own life if the deer instead represents himself, but I personally do not think so. If Jack did merely take his own life, then why are his wounds later in this sequence so severe? If it were merely a suicide, he wouldn't look so roughed up.

They also chose to linger on the blood covering Jack's hands, perhaps symbolising the guilt he feels over shooting "Bon". This could also relate to the "test" that Jack claims God is giving him. I interpret this as Jack believing that God is punishing him for the sin he committed. Also, if the deer earlier did represent him taking his own life, then focusing on the blood on his hands here suddenly doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

This line of thinking also explains why Jack tore Sophie's drawing up: because it's a reminder of what he did. There's also what appear to be tears on it, again showing residual guilt over what he did. Also, why didn't Jack press charges against Felix? Perhaps because he would think of himself as a hypocrite if he did.

As for why I think "Bon" has Jack trapped and is making him watch, consider the following pieces of evidence:

The tape in TWF2 labelled "06/11/7X" (the date of Jack's disappearance) features what I consider to be a hit list of sorts. It says, "Jack, Susan, Charles, Rosemary, Sophie." It's a list of victims. We know this because all of the people mentioned have either been targeted or are currently being targeted by Bon, and it's in the order of their deaths/disappearances, too. In the context of this theory, this tape suddenly makes a lot more sense. It's "Bon" meticulously planning out the order in which he is going to kill.

In TWF1, this text appears, which is most definitely Jack if you consider the context of the sequence. "Let me out of here" reads as a desperate call for help. If Jack is the one doing the killing, why is he asking to be let out? If he's not in Bon, where else could he be trapped? It's because he is in Bon and he's not in control; he's trapped. He's being held captive inside the suit by "Bon," who is forcing him to watch as he murders everyone he holds dear.

Why is Bon sometimes shown crying when he kills someone? Because they're Jack's tears. Because Jack is being forced to watch innocent people, including his loved ones, die.

This right here is my smoking gun piece of evidence that I always bring up when I'm talking about this theory. Jack's head appears in little Bon's backpack in TWF2, perhaps symbolising that he is merely "luggage." In other words, "Bon" is the one in control, whereas Jack is just along for the ride with little control.

There are also numerous instances that all suggest there are two presences inside of Bon. Bon's eye colour constantly shifts (similar to Rocket), Bon's personality can quickly go from erratic and insane to calm and loving, there's the changing voice (one of which is absolutely Jack), etc.

Also, Jack being the killer is just questionable from a writing perspective. I think it would work, yes, but these writers are competent. If Jack is the one doing the killing, they wouldn't give us so many hints for it being Jack whilst simultaneously keeping it a mystery just for it to end up being him. Even if it works, it's a lame reveal. Despite this, it's neigh undeniable that Jack is inside Bon.

But why would he do this? Not only does Jack not seem like the type of man to do this, but he also wouldn't work with the shadow man (who is most definitely Felix). Why would he give Rosemary (his loving wife) the most brutal death when he absolutely doesn't have to? This has always been the biggest roadblock in the Jack = Bon theory, but this theory allows for all of that evidence to be true without the contradiction to Jack's character.

Why does Bon do all of those things if Jack is inside of him? Easy, because Jack isn't the one in control!

There is likely more evidence for this as I'm definitely not the first one to propose it, but it's been a theory I've had for a few years now. I feel so vindicated that other people have been coming to this conclusion, too! If you have any additional notes or evidence you'd like to add, please feel free to share !!

Lots of discourse about how good/bad of people Jack and Rosemary are is completely missing that a lot of the story's characters are shaped by the circumstances and era they're in, and that a lot of the point of Faces of Grief- as I saw it- is how Jack and Rosemary failed each other and Sophie in the face of such a devastating loss.

"Jack is patriarchal and thinks he should be stronger than his wife and daughter" yes, and he was raised in the 1950s and is trying to take on the role of the protective family man because it's what he learned and he believes it's what his family needs. Misogynistic and rooted in misogynistic ideals, yes, but it doesn't make him a raging sexist, it's just a way he fails his family because that's what the episode is about. Arguably, by not allowing himself to grieve to keep up the image of the strong patriarch of the Walten family, he's also failing himself.

"Rosemary doesn't get any help for her obviously deteriorating mental health and is a worse mother to Sophie for it" yes, and it's 1974 and that kind of thing was way more stigmatized, and also Rose's mental health is so violently bad that she believes she doesn't deserve help and no amount of Sophie needing her is going to change those factors. This doesn't make her an irredeemable person because she didn't put her daughter first when she was not capable of it, it's just a way that she fails her family and herself. Y'know what I mean
