I told my health coach that being forty means that I am a bit more than halfway done with being alive, and they told me that actually, the longer you live, the longer your life expectancy extends. Like sure the average life expectancy for a man of my approximate generation and nationality and socioeconomic status is about 76.5 years, but that incorporates people who die in infancy, and childhood, and adolescence, and that as you make it to each milestone, there are things that become increasingly unlikely to kill you.
So actually I may be a bit under halfway done. Maybe significantly under halfway done, if I'm an outlier.
And that pissed me off to be honest! I don't want to think about the prospect of living until I'm 90, let alone 100.
It's nice to have a significant portion of my life behind me. I thought it would feel awful, but it doesn't. I get to focus on what matters most to me, and I get to decide what I do with my time. There is a lot of peace in that.
i don't really want to weight in on the "using big words in your writing is ableist" discourse happening on tiktok because i'm like 90% certain it's an anti-intellectual psyop to stir up drama in online circles to promote the use of ai to summarize literally everything and thus feeding the LLMs and lowering the populace's mistrust of such tools but i also have to say: dictionaries and thesauruses are the most accessible they've ever been. if you use an e-reader of any kind you can look up a word without leaving the page. there's a plethora of online dictionaries and if you just type a word + "meaning" into google it'll usually give you a definition. we used to have pocket dictionaries we used when reading in class. i have two on my shelf right now that i used in high school. stop letting the fascists purposefully misuse anti-ableism rhetoric to trick you into never thinking again.
for your consideration
this is so awesome
If you saw me recreationally vaccinating homeschooled children with blow darts then you should be thanking me, no? Relax a little. Blow darts are cool

The Twilight Zone: Our episode "A Slot Machine Chases You Around Physically" was meant as a cautionary tale about the predatory nature of the gambling industry
The Gambling Industry: We've invented the slot machine that chases you around physically from The Twilight Zone episode "A Slot Machine Chases You Around Physically"
That’s a real episode, for anyone who didn’t know.

I know it's for a good reason -- frictionless transferring of funds from a brokerage account to an external account is actually Not Good because the security measures protecting these things are basically tissue paper in the rain -- but it is so annoying to get money out of my brokerage account and into where I can, like. Spend it.
