Donate to the Collection
The curatorial team at Tullie have their work cut out for them, as they care for a collection of almost 1 million objects. So that we can continue to give our objects the care and attention they deserve, we have to be selective about any new objects that become part of the collection. We need to make sure that the objects we care for and share with our visitors and community tell the story of Carlisle and Cumbria. To help make the decision-making process easier we discuss potential new acquisitions as a team and assess them against a variety of criteria including our Collections Development Policy.
If you have something you think we might be interested in, email curatorialenquiries@tulliehouse.org with as much information about the object and its history as you can. If you could include a photograph, that would be even better!
Please note, we can’t take objects on permanent loan or guarantee that objects will be displayed.
Interested in using the collection?
We want to share the incredible objects we care for to encourage research, exploration and discussion in relevant and meaningful ways. There are various ways to use the collection.
Wildlife Records
Tullie hosts Cumbria Biodiversity Data Centre, which holds over two million wildlife records and is the oldest record centre of its kind in the country.
Archaeological Recording
Tullie hosts Finds Days for the Finds Liaison Officer for Cumbria and Lancashire, as part of the Portable Antiquities Scheme (PAS). The PAS has over 1 million records from across the country, all recording finds discovered by metal detectorists and members of the public.
Depositing Archaeological Archives
Tullie is still collecting archaeological archives from excavations which fall into our collecting area and under our deposition guidance. We ideally would like you to notify us before you begin excavations within our collecting area and keep us informed of discoveries.
