Dear DJs, thanks for your prompts, submissions, and pinch hits!

All pinch hits are either in, or on schedule to be posted, so we are hopeful we can open the collection for reading/viewing/listening on the 12th of July. To ensure a pinch hit buffer, we will open at 11:59pm New York time.

You are very welcome to post further treats - see prompts here and post to the collection here (make sure you fill in your recipient's name).

Packing

silver_chipmunk: (Default)
Woke up at 10:00 to my alarm, but didn't get out of bed til 11:00. Then had breakfast and coffee.

Puttered around online for awhile, then showered and dressed.

Then I started packing for my trip. Since I'm leaving Tuesday, and I'm going to be busy tomorrow and Sunday, this was my best time to get the nuts and bolts done.

First I packed my clothes, which meant I went through all of my tee shirts and picked out first the ones I didn't want to bring, then picking specifically the ones I did. I found my pajamas that I'm going to wear, and two pairs of jeans plus what I'm wearing up, seven pairs of shorts, and one long sleaved shirt just in case it gets chilly one day, and my bathing suit.

Then after I packed all that I came out to the living room, and fit the three boxes of ashes into the other suitcase. They fit no problem, I also put in the three photos I'm bringing, two of Oldest Brother, and one of my parents together. I'm pretty sure I will be able to fit my computer in that suitcase too. But that doesn't get packed til Monday. I did put my pair of fake Crocs in too. I need them as beach shoes.

I packed some other stuff too, my Nook in my computer bag, also my Fitbit charger, and so on.

Anyway, I did that for most of the day. I made out a list of stuff not to forget, too.

Finally at 5:00 I left for my Al-anon meeting in the Bronx. Got a 25 bus pretty fast, also a 50, so I got in with plenty of time. Had my pizza and then went to wait for the meeting.

Very good meeting and we actually had 7 people for the second one. Very good!

Didn't get a ride to the bus stop but made it with plenty of time. Then only had to wait a few minutes in Queens for the 25.

Got home and Teamed the FWiB. While we were talking, one of the two light bulbs in my ceiling light died. I'll have to change it tomorrow or Sunday. I hope it's easier than the last time.

Anyway, Teamed the FWiB almost an hour and a half, then fed the pets and started here.

Oh BTW the turtle food I ordered Wednesday night from Amazon arrived yesterday, no problem.

May be going to the Mets game tomorrow, if [personal profile] mashfanficchick decides ze's not going. Ze will let me know tomorrow.

Gratitude List:

1. The FWiB.

2. Mostly all packed.

3. The ashes fit in the suitcase.

4. Pizza.

5. My meetings and the people there.

6. Bed soon.

Challenge: Art Is an Explosion

Warnings: None, unless "absolutely kicking ass" is a content warning.

Comment: Hey, as soon as I saw the challenge, I knew I was going to pick an X Japan song. Their stuff is the kind of thing that sets your heart on fire, and they love to start songs off quiet before absolutely exploding into kickass 80s power metal/rock. Desperate Angel, specifically, really rules, a good passionate pulse-pounding classic rock tune that is absolutely guaranteed to make your 40+ male relatives go "holy shit who are these guys and why has the world been keeping them from me" (I speak from experience). Also, the instant I heard the first few notes I was like "oh, this is a Taiji song, isn't it".

Okay, I'm crowd-sourcing here.

Trying to decide at least five moments of slight (not major, nothing that would crash a burgeoning relationship) points of discussion or contention between two people who are Jewish. I've got one scene where health overrides food issue (but the food issue is the strange one because this is future sci-fi and the food is synthetic).

I kind of would like these minor points to be spaced over a growing closer to one another (the pair argue canonically to the point it looks like ritual or courting). So I am asking those of you who ARE Jewish, or actually close to the community:

What points are open for debate/minor arguing between traditions? I am MORE than willing to look up the points themselves to educate myself, but I keep banging my head against "I am NOT Jewish, and I have only a bare-bones awareness of key points that differ between traditions".

Point the second that might be needed: both would be North American/European-derived in their heritage.

Hey! You over there! Can you help me practice my shooting? If you do, I'll give you some meat!

Oh, you don't want any meat? You prefer cards? Who would choose cards over meat?

That's okay, we can still help each other! You just throw some of your cards for my target practice, and I'll swap them out with new ones when I'm done. Everybody wins! And then we can all eat some meat together.

Rules:
- You can play up to four cards and one crayon per weekly round. You'll lose these cards & crayons.
- Ochette will replace the cards with other cards of the same deck but with a different number.
- Ochette will replace your crayon with another of a different color.
- Please list the card names and crayon color so I can swap them easily.
- There's no special criteria that'll decide the replacements. Everything's going to be randomized. You're only guaranteed to not get the same exact things in return.
- If you have a reward coupon that guarantees you more cards from answering a round, you can use it to get more plays.

This round ends on Friday, July 17th.

Kotomi is the smartest student at Hikarizaka Highschool, and one of the smartest in Japan, but she has a difficult time making smalltalk and opening up to new people. Reading is her usual hobby, but she won't say no to Rubik's cubes or a game of chess. What better way to make some new friends than to work together on a challenging jigsaw puzzle! Though these ones aren't quite the 10,000 piece puzzles you hang up on your wall.

Last week's results:

Anne Shirley [4] - [12] An Shiraishi
Anna Kushina [7] - [9] Anna Williams
Anne (Rage of Bahamut) [5] - [11] An Onoya
Anna Liebert [1] - [15] Ann Takamaki

Good day, Colors players. My name is Elizabeth. I am here to host the most amazing battle tournament in existence - the Colorseum!
Don't worry, no one will get hurt, at least as long as I don't want them to... The battles will not be decided by strength or strategy, but rather by the ability to win the crowd's hearts! And the judges... will be you!

Want more details? My pleasure!
- Each 'round' will consist of 5 'sub-rounds', posted weekly. They will be First Round A, First Round B, Quarterfinals, Semifinals and the Final!
- Each round will have a theme - they work in a similar way to the Scrapbook things you use here.
- Each round will have 16 characters from various series fighting in one-on-one battles, in a form of a knockout tournament.
- You decide who will advance to the next round by casting your votes.
- The votes are unscreened, and every player participating will get the same prizes, regardless of the final results! That means you can always vote for the characters YOU like the most!
- Feel free to try to convince other players to vote for your favourites! Bribery, threats - anything goes! Just be civil about that.
- I will always vote last, just before closing the round. If two characters are tied after that, the one with the higher seed advances to the next round.

Now, let's see today's battles!

-apparently there is an article that has some trash-talk about one of the guys from one of the primaries I'm working on--I can't read it because I don't pay for the newspaper's shitty website.(Oh, well, guess I don't have to make room in my brain then. Which is not a thought my college self with her pink sweaters and "The truth will set you free," would be into, obvs, but she didn't know how bad it could get.)
The healthcare group that runs my doctor's practice sent an automated e-mail all "Time for your mammogram,"
but I still don't know how someone like me, who can't stand, even a little, gets screened anyway.(I asked my doctor and he said "Huh!" which is always confidence-inspiring. Not like I want it anyway, not that I believe that Catching It Early, even, would be anything more than an unqualified nightmare, but my biggest fear there isn't even cancer but rounding up an "entourage"(Where's Drama when you need him?) struggling through in an inaccessible environment, and then not being able to prove that I'm all right or something. Even though I said, right? I wrote some of that in an e and got it back.(Are there times I don't really care if my "muddle-through years" get cut short? Yeah, but medical trauma drives it more, I swear.

Continued my short story kick with a new collection by Louise Erdrich, Python's Kiss; I particularly liked her unexpected* foray into sci-fi with a pair of stories set in a San Junipero-like digital afterlife, one about a woman plotting vengeance on her father (also dead, in the same afterlife) and the other about a woman whose version of heaven includes raising a construct of her daughter through (but not past) childhood, over and over, until the current version – the "8037th Caroline" – refuses to fade away and takes over her mother's (after)life instead. Two of the other stories I liked best also shared a thematic link, of women surviving abusive marriages: contemporary fiction played straight in "Wedding Dresses" – the titular dresses a story framework for a woman telling her niece about her four prior marriages – and with a magical-realism twist in "Borsalino," in which the main character's encounter with a ghostly thief in Venice decades before helps her leave her abusive husband. Snakes are another recurring theme. Cool black-and-white illustrations by Erdrich's daughter at the beginning of each story, frequently blurring line between drawing and comic strip.

* It came as a surprise to me, anyway— I'd forgotten about/haven't read her dystopian speculative fiction novel Future Home of the Living God.

This video by 8BITJOYSTICK recently crossed my Youtube recommendations, and BOY do I feel targeted.

If you're looking for recommendations on what to do, I would suggest expanding from this. The general idea of physical reminders and limited choice is such a boon, and I kinda hate how it took this long for me to remember that that's an option.

I spent a bit of time this evening cleaning out an old bin full of Pokemon cards (didn't toss them, just transfered them) and collecting some stuff to throw in the the bin. So far, I have some books/comics, video games, physical games, and movies/TV series. The idea will hopefully be that I'll at least work through some of these pieces of media bit by bit and stop falling into wholes on Youtube.

My current list includes:
  • Dragon AGE TTRPG (solo play)
  • Hunter/Hunted (duo/solo journalling game)
  • 20 Strong (solo card game)
  • Crown of Vengence (physical book)
  • Prince Freya Vol 1 (graphic novel)
  • Stone & Steel (novella)
  • Dororo (TV series)
  • Weathering With You (Movie)
  • Natsume's Book of Friends, Season 1 (TV series, borrowed from a friend)
  • Fire Emblem: Shadows of Valentia (game)
  • Myth VI: Revelations (game -- already started)
  • Kingdom Hearts: Melody of Memory (game -- borrowed from a friend)

Is this an excuse for me to finally play/watch the stuff I've borrowed for the last few months so I can get them back to my friends? Yes, yes, of course.

I'll probably do progress reports as I work through/on them.

Update

The Costco drug acquisition went as smooth as butta. The pharmacy opens at 9 but Costco does not open til 10 for the poor folks. The fancy membership people get in at 9. I breezed in at 9:40 with my poor people's card and they just said 'welcome and good morning!!'.

I had already paid for the Wegovy before I got there so pick up was easy peasy.

I swung by the mail place and picked up a package and dropped mine off and then came home to track down the UPS guy. Missed him! daggone it. So I'll see the new tablet maybe today, maybe this weekend, doubtful Monday, maybe Tuesday. Fuck their broken system.

Then I had lunch and we back to the mail place for another package that had been delivered. There are two more coming today and one tomorrow. I'm going to wait until tomorrow's comes and then go get them all.

And that should be it for the barrage of packages for a while anyway. Logged me some decent steps.
