Catch Up!

Because it's always fun to check in on fandomy and other things, too.

But first, I finally shared my October pinup shots. I'm not as thrilled with them as the first batch - my hair and makeup wasn't as good, and I wasn't as good at arching my back and pushing my chin forward - but some of them are really fun. I especially love the ones on the TV, and I wish I had that green dress in my own collection. Liss's pictures came out better than mine (I cropped her out of the duo shots on request), and I wish I could share those. But still - super fun!

I've been doing a rewatch of Call the Midwife the last two weeks. I loved the Christmas special, watched the Sr. Bernadette/Shelagh Festivid last month and promptly undeleted the Christmas special so I could rewatch. All along, I'd adored Peter and Chummy, but I barely enough noticed Patrick and Shelagh the first time through, so I thought I'd do a series rewatch to see it develop. It really was super subtle - and didn't help that a few key scenes along the way got cut by PBS! I ordered the British DVDs, which were both cheaper than the American and uncut. Score.

I've also been rereading the books. I love how many of the stories are true. I get indignant when they change some things, though - like the s2 story about the Masters family where only one child survived TB to live to adulthood. The real story was much bigger (3 chapters) and much sadder and Mr Masters was a good man who just didn't know how to show he loved his remaining child. I got mad on his memory's behalf when they turned him into a jerk to redeem him just in time. That was a real person! Don't do that! (On the contrary, I did not mind when they changed the other S2 story about the son who in real life rejected his mother because she was poor and unkept, but in the show helped her and stayed in touch. Or the S1 story with the mom with triplets - in real life, they never heard what happened, on the show her sailor came back. Those are fine changes, hee.)

Of course, the real Sr. Bernadette probably would be horrified to learn that her character left the order to marry the Doctor. In real life, she left the order all right - in the 80s because she was so incensed that the Anglican church would allow women pastors. She ended up becoming a Catholic nun and continuing her work with AIDS patients. Sorry, Sister. I like your fictional story a little better.

Which reminds me - now that we see her out of the habit, I've realized how much she looks like my college roommate Kaycee and her sister: Laura Main. Are you Scottish, K? I do actually wonder if there's some distant relation.

Also, I've learned that Stephen McGann, who plays Dr. Turner, is the 8th Doctor's youngest brother, and Pam Ferris, who plays Sr. Evangelina, was both The Trunchbull in Matilda and Aunt Marge in Harry Potter. My mind was blown entirely.

...hmm, that basically is my fandom update. LOL I've pretty much just been watching that and the Olympics. (I still think Virtue and Moir should have won, and Carolina Kostner deserved silver.)

I am tentatively planning both an October Disney World trip (with BFF/prek combo) and a February Disneyland trip for Dapper Day with KC. Not sure if either will actually happen, but fingers crossed!

Oh, I FINALLY saw Frozen and Saving Mr Banks in a Disney theater doubleheader last weekend. I adored Frozen, and while Mr Banks wasn't what I expected, I enjoyed it quite a lot. It was lovely and very well done. I also liked that even though it was Disney, they didn't totally whitewash Walt. He was a manipulative jerk to her and it was all business. I liked that, and wished he was in it more - Tom Hanks was genius.

I've had a weird week, where I was off Monday for a migraine, went to bed Wednesday at 6:30pm and slept (on and off) until 8am, have today off from a canceled vacation so I'm meeting Meg and baby for lunch, am meeting up with Betsy-Tacy people tomorrow for dinner and a trivia competition at work, and then have to go to my grandmother's on Sunday to make sure she's settling in okay.

(Did I mention that she's being released from rehab tomorrow? With a nurse visiting once a week, but otherwise dependent on my horrid uncle? I can't believe it's happening. And I can't believe that I have to go make sure she's settled into her horrible, dirty, dusty, moldy hoarder home. I am hoping to limit my involvement to an hour, 90 minutes max.)

Lots of social stuff, so I am hoping to stay super low key the rest of my weekend. Some cleaning, some reading, some TV, finishing up Call the Midwife. Fingers crossed.

After six weeks of waiting and sending increasingly pushy e-mails, I finally got the jpgs of my Torchsong actor photos. (God only knows when I'll get the hard copies.) One of the Gareth photos has me all washed out, which is unfortunate, but the others came out pretty well. I re-sized and cropped them a bit, to get the obnoxious logo out of the way, and uploaded to Flickr. (These came absolutely huge and very high quality, which was a pleasant surprise.)

Torchsong! )

And then a bonus pic - yesterday I worked 1-9. The 1-3:30 shift was exceedingly difficult due to 10-11 year old volunteers giving attitude and I was totally worn out and hating the world. So after a quick dinner at Subway, I opted to get a manicure instead of dessert. Totally the right call - 20 minutes, $12, and I felt human again. I had chosen a lavender with sparkles, but the technician said no, it was too old a color for me. She pulled this one out and said it'd look spectacular, like I was wearing fake nails because mine were so perfect. So, what the hell, I went for it. And love it.

Pretty purple nails )

So I've been here for half a day and taken fifty pictures! I love it all. The resort is amazing, afternoon tea was delicious and amazing and we are just giddy to be here.

I really regret bringing two pairs of capris instead of two pairs of shorts, though. Today's 75 felt a hell of a lot hotter, GAH. Melting.

Tomorrow: Magic Kingdom and Epcot!

Today was utterly gorgeous and I shall miss it tomorrow. Mid 70s - I ate lunch out in the park and warm sun. I saw this completely adorable yorkie puppy, teensy tiny, on his second day outside ever. He was utterly terrified of the wind and his owner and I cooed over him quite a bit. *g* Then we had our department meeting outside as well, which I thought was fun.

What was also fun was seeing so many people in green. Parents and their kids, sure, not surprising. But nearly all of the adult patrons I saw on the third floor had green on, too. That's just awesome. *g*

I'm finally catching up on TV. Somehow, Monday's have gotten overloaded with TV shows to watch - Dancing with the Stars, House, Top Gear and Castle, plus GH during the day. So naturally, last night I only watched PBS. I just finished DwtS - big improvements over last week! I thought Ty was doing awesome until they did closeups on his face and he looked nauseated and terrified. Lil Kim was also great and I have mad lust for Gilles.

Also, John Barrowman is back on my TV! BBCA keeps showing ads for Any Dream Will Do, starting later this month. I don't really see the point of watching reran reality TV where I know the result, but hey - John Barrowman on my TV. Sold.

One of my DC photographs (Alexandria, actually) has been shortlisted for inclusion in a DC photo guide. Apparently not many people take photos of the Lee-Fendall house? Not sure, but it's still pretty cool.

Natasha Richardson's accident makes me very sad. :( That's such a awful situation and I feel badly for her family. Seriously traumatizing for her son who was there, too, I imagine.
suzy_queue: Animated rain over a rainbow (Scott + CJ = OTP!!!11!)
You know what's totally awesome? Getting dizzy and nauseous six minutes into your shift at work, apparently losing all color, going into the bathroom to splash water on your face and finding yourself so unable to comprehend the idea of walking back to your desk that you just drop to the bathroom floor and sprawl there for almost an hour, waiting for a ride home because you just can't move. UGH. This, clearly, was yesterday, a pre-show to a migraine, because I am up and about today. But still worn out and tired and so far behind in everything that I could cry. But instead am choosing to do absolutely nothing useful in order to prepare myself for a very long day of schoolwork tomorrow.

Relatedly, I have pretty much lost interest in classes. Well, one class, but that's overshadowing my love for the second one. Seriously, why I thought metadata was a good idea is totally beyond me, ugh. However, if I am able to create a hypothetical Doctor Who digital sound/visual/document archive for my final project, I may find it worthwhile again. I totally want to have coverage-temporal tags for First Doctor, Second Doctor, etc, because those are definite time tags that represent blocks of years and could be used to access Companions, villains, actors, locations, etc.

[livejournal.com profile] wabbitseason did this meme, and I thought it could be fun. Comment to this post and I will give you a few subjects/things I associate with you. Then post this in your LJ and elaborate on the subjects given.

My thoughts on C.J., knitting challenges, Ianto, appeal of boy bands, and photography. )
