I wrote about the different effects of creating a GIF (moving image) or a collage (compilation of multiple images into one static image out of frames from the same scene, which I thought might interest other photo editors. While writing it, I came across the Fanlore entry on the picspam that likens picspams to fanart. It's a first for me to see picspams described that way!

Second is discussion over on SquidgeWorld about possibly disabling guest comments from here on out. This is due to a commission spammer feeding fics into ChatGPT and then having ChatGPT spit out questions that might engage the creator(s). While we can try and prevent AI from scraping our works, we can't prevent someone copy & pasting said works into an AI engine for their own use.
But disabling guest comments is a big step toward that.
There's a whole discussion on SquidgeWorld if you'd like to read there. If you have an account, you can comment there, or you may comment here as you like. I'd like people to be a part of this conversation as opposed to telling people what can and can't be done as part of their access to the open Internet.

John Higgs begins his foray into the long-standing BBC television science fiction series Doctor Who with a personal anecdote about going to the pub with Tom Baker, the notoriously bibulous actor who played the part of the Doctor from 1975 to 1981 - still longer than anyone else. (Travis Elborough, Doctor, Doctor: the genesis of a national folk hero, Spectator Australia, April 2025)
It’s part of a two-year campaign to reduce food waste that company executives in this famously bibulous country decided to call 'happy hour' in the hopes of drawing in regulars, like any decent bar. (David Segal, The World Wastes Tons of Food. A Grocery ‘Happy Hour’ Is One Answer., The New York Times, September 2019)
Moldovans are the most bibulous nation in the world, gulping more than 18 liters per person every year, according to a new report from the WHO. The world of alcoholism in a sentence is: Europeans drink a lot of booze, and the Arab-Islamic world does not. (Derek Thompson, Map of the Day: This Is What Global Alcohol Consumption Looks Like, The Atlantic, February 2011)
Large numbers should not be thrown into a killing bottle together, and plenty of bibulous paper should be kept in the bottle to prevent moisture from accumulating and wetting and ruining the specimens. (C V Riley, Directions for Collecting and Preserving Insects)
There was Vasily, of course, who wore thick glasses, the most scholarly-looking of the lot and certainly the most bibulous - Simon came to think of Vasily as the Vodka Breather. (Fritz Leiber, Pipe Dream)
Origin:
1670s, 'spongy, absorbent,' from Latin bibulus 'drinking readily, given to drink;' of things, 'absorbent; moistened,' from bibere 'to drink' (from PIE root po(i)- 'to drink'). The meaning 'fond of drink' is attested in English by 1861. (Online Etymology Dictionary)
Not being much of a sports fan, I had no idea now many soccer moves were named after players!
First, you make your opponent think you're going to kick the ball.
Then, while the ball is running in front of you, you throw your foot over the ball to look like you're going to kick in one direction.
But, you're going to quickly take the ball in the opposite direction using the outside of the foot from the previous step.

palinode
noun
pal·in·ode ˈpa-lə-ˌnōd
1: an ode or song recanting or retracting something in an earlier poem
2: a formal retraction
Did you know?
Does singing someone's praises in a palinode pay off? It did in the case of Stesichorus, a Greek poet of the 6th century B.C. According to Plato, old Stesichorus was struck blind after writing a poem insulting Helen of Troy, but his sight was restored after he wrote an apologetic palinode. That poet was only too glad to apply the Greek word palinōidia (a compound of palin, meaning "back" or "again," and aeidein, meaning "to sing"). So were 16th-century English poets, who borrowed and modified the Greek term to refer to odes of their own.
Etymology
Greek palinōidia, from palin + aeidein to sing
First Known Use
1579, in the meaning defined at sense 1
Example:
Gelett Burgess’ "The Purple Cow":
The American humorist penned a famously catchy quatrain in 1895:
"I never saw a purple cow
I never hope to see one
But I can tell you, anyhow
I'd rather see than be one."
It became so overwhelmingly popular that it annoyed him, leading him to write this unapologetic palinode several years later:
Ah, yes! I wrote the "Purple Cow,"
I'm sorry now I wrote it!
But I can tell you, anyhow,
I'll kill you if you quote it!
