ALL the fan cons. All of them.

I am mostly now recovered from Nineworlds!

It was brilliant, but damn, that is the most tiring con I've ever been to. (Nearly everybody I know of was having at least one nap a day. And not because it was boring; the opposite, if anything.) I'd never been to a larger con before. I am definitely in favour of them, even if they take rather more energy to navigate and enjoy than the smaller cons I'm used to. There were many people in awesome costumes! There was an awful lot of fabulous discussion! There was a most excellent queer cabaret night, complete with incredibly lovely marriage proposal at the end of it in song form.

(Dear [personal profile] happydork and [personal profile] such_heights, I think you may have spoilt the world for all public proposals in future, for all time. You are awesome.)

SO: next year, people? (And can we talk about Vidukon?)

current pet peeve: the phrase "de-evolved".

I really enjoyed X-Men: First Class!

I don't have anything much to say about it apart from that. It was way closer to what I want from an X-Men movie than I expected or hoped for, and it was a way fun experience especially as someone who has thought Xavier/Magneto totally goddamn canon for ages, but otherwise I largely think these two articles sum up anything I might have to say:

This, which is kind of First Class-in-Fifteen-Minutes. I lolled. And Collapse )

I would love this post for being called "Fucking Magnetos... how do they work?" alone, but it is also a brilliant and hilarious and at least slightly actually scientific examination of Magneto's powers. Herr Professor and I had almost exactly this discussion on the way home from the cinema, and it makes me very happy on so many geeky levels!

I have also been having Thoughts about female representation in media, and I was going to outline a bunch for you, but then I found this wonderful post already did it for me. Technically it is a post about a vid about manpain, but trust me, it's great.

And if you have ever wondered what the deal is with manpain as a concept, this is also worth reading. It really crystallised some things for me: specifically, this shit is why a whole bunch of otherwise very nice feminist men feel like women don't appreciate their problems. This is how dudes are told to conceptualise their problems. This is how men are told they can feel pain. And to people who are not straight white dudes, those ways mostly make you a douchebag, for reasons which will be very clear if you read the post.

And christ, mainstream media of the world, we can seriously do so much better than "any bad thing which happens to a woman is actually all background and set-up for a white dude's story". We can do SO MUCH BETTER. Look at that shit, realise how stupid and toxic it is, and then clean it the fuck up, please.

(Yes, all mainstream media will now listen to me. Oh and it's worth noticing that once more people who are not perfectly cis-gendered have no role within this structure at all. Trans people defy the idea that there are two sorts of people, the women who are ultimately useful in terms of providing motivation in someone else's plot and the men whom it is All About.)

Okay, now I need to Go. If anything I should know about happens over the weekend, tell me!

waves on the sand

This is mostly some links to pretty things or stuff that has been cheering me because today has been kind of... rubbish.

This guy designs new covers for books. They are stunning.

This video of teaching a non-techy person how to use a computer is entirely too accurate.

This hair salon poster of non-traditionally-feminine hair has been linked around a bit but it is definitely excellent and also it helps balance, in my head the next point, which is...

...since watching Inception I have apparently got a fairly serious case of the Joseph Gordon-Levitts. I DON'T EVEN KNOW. Sudden attacks of heterosexualism are not entirely unknown chez Katie, but it is disconcerting! I am not used to this, people. And last I knew, he was an amusing alien with a bad hair cut. Now he is running a really adorable multi-media arts thing with his brother in which he is pretty and funny and smart and sometimes sings IN FRENCH. Also he likes Jay Smooth. I am irrationally charmed.

And I am crap at birthdays, but today has TWO.

The first is [personal profile] jai, who is delightful and who I kind of can't believe I've only met in person once. I am totally having a drink in her honour, and you should too. (Well, if you drink. I'm not that dictatorial. *g*)

And the other one is [personal profile] catwalksalone, and I feel like the world needs to know this because, on levels I cannot even begin to describe, the last few years have been SO much better for having Cat in them. She is an oasis of - okay, sometimes she's an oasis of being annoyed at dumbassery or squeeing or having the prettiest princess of a pet feline, but I love all those things and she has made a whole lot of difference to my world, and that is one of the things I want to remember today. ♥

I'm just saying, NCIS band AU fic, people, and it is fun and lovely.**

count to zero

I have been keeping up with the G20 stuff happening and I don't have time for longer or more involved thoughts. I will, however, link you to this video, which despite the best attempts of the traditionally bad YouTube comments I found mostly kind of sad... until one moment that did make me really laugh.

What's that you say? A Doctor Who vid in the style of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy? Can such a thing exist? Yes, yes it can.

I am a sucker for gay marriage stories but this one is just spectacularly aww-inducing.

This piece of utter rage-inducing racist drek (warnings for utterly failed attempt at "humour" thinly disguising racist douchebaggery) is awful, but seems to actually be being picked up as bad elsewhere, which is good.

How had I never heard of One Million Giraffes before? I kind of love it and want to send one in.

Right, and now I need sleep.

Booklog 5: The Aperture Science Reading Log Welcomes You

So, it is now June, and here is a book post! I did not have the best of months, reading-wise; I had a few things I didn't get round to reading because actually I just was like 'blaaah I do not have the energy I am re-reading some GK Chesterton instead', which resulted in me looking at my list to write this post and going "holy effing what that's a lot of white dudes". I guess awareness of one's own laziness is the only way you can start improving it, right?

Sue Perkins does a documentary about Anne Lister, Regency-era landowner and lesbian. It's excellent!

So, Stephen Colbert shows up at Conan O'Brien's New York tour date, and hijinks ensue! Warning: features a dance-off, surprise!Jon Stewart, and the mighty, mighty vengeance of the sound-effects guy. Bwah. Times A MILLIONTY.

The new Scott Pilgrim trailer has Wallace in it. WALLACE! ♥ ♥ ♥ And KIM DRUMMING. ♥ ♥ ♥ (There is no way I'm going to love this movie as much as I hope I am, right?)

Right, non-Who stuff:

Five Reasons Why Being Transgender In Fandom Really Sucks, And Why I Stick With It Anyway is an essay on trans issues in fandom. It's going to be one I'll ponder over for a while, I think - some of it I guessed, some of it I should have and will work on, and some of it seems like very necessary fodder for further discussion on issues that get almost no time spent on them.

I was also going to rant about the petty horribleness that was sending the gay kid and the learning disabled to a separate, fake prom but Constance seems likely to do well despite that crap, and also it's old news now zomg, but I had the link right there, so.

And there is a Nero Wolfe re-read/geekathon over at [community profile] milk_and_orchids! *needs to get over there*

(I am on holiday now but after lots of cider yesterday and errands today it seems like omg holiday is going to be over in a flash. Craaaazy. *falls asleep*)

Because today seems to suck for most people, here, have some cheap thrills.

Brilliant advice to all queer types reading this, from the one and only Sue Sylvester. AHAHAHAHA.

I love Jane Lynch SO MUCH. And not just for providing the only possible context in which "Adam Lambert: you're on the right track, but still too subtle" is possible. Hahahahahaha.

A very good Doctor Who/Sense and Sensibility crossover fic! No, really. And it's called Relatives and Relativity, which makes me happy.

This is what gets on Ukraine's Got Talent. I don't know what I think of the fact that Ukraine's Got Talent exists - it makes me both want to laugh a lot, and throw myself off a bridge - but this is severely impressive. I think the only word possible is 'wow'.
