You should be ashamed... of being so cute

It's the NON-SEXUAL INTIMACY MEME!

The following is shamelessly copied off of Noelle, who copied it off of bakerstreet:

Intimacy is NOT necessarily about full sexual contact. Intimacy is all about two people forming a connection and bond between them. That involves becoming best friends, trusting each other, knowing each other, understanding each other. Intimacy is grown and developed, it can't be rushed.

Nonsexual forms of intimacy can add a great deal of depth and variety to fiction. On one end of the spectrum, they provide extra steps to support the journey from meeting a potential mate through romance, sex, and marriage. In the middle, they convey the import of family and professional connections, distinguishing those from more casual acquaintances. On the other end, they form much of the glue in primary relationships for people who don't base their ties on sexuality. Sex and romance are valuable, but they're not everything.

PROMPTS:

1. Hair care.
Brushing, braiding, washing, cutting -- all of these involve a lot of careful touching in ways that many people enjoy. Hair braiding is a bonding experience in some cultures. In fact, grooming is a bonding technique for social primates in general. People without close ties to others often treat themselves to regular salon visits as a socially acceptable way to meet the need for touch and interaction.
2. Shaving. This involves an unusually high level of trust, especially if the person is using a straight-edge razor or something else with an exposed blade rather than just a buzzer. Although it can apply to women, shaving is one of the few forms of physical intimacy that is most closely associated with men due to their facial hair. Initiaton into shaving is a major milestone for becoming a man, not just for boys during puberty but also for transsexuals during transition.
3. Bathing. This varies by culture; in America most people bathe alone but some other cultures practice communal bathing. A bath is usually more intimate than a shower, although a public bath can be non-intimate and small shower stall can be intimate. It's also different when two people wash each other (an exchange of intimacy and affection) than when one person washes someone else (more of a caretaking or protective gesture).
4. Feeding. A classic romantic motif involves lovers feeding each other, but it works as a way of providing and caring for someone in any context. Like bathing, it can also clue whether both parties are participating equally or one is taking care of the other (temporarily or regularly). This one has an existential flavor since survival depends on food supply.
5. Seeing someone without their adaptive equipment on. This includes glasses, dentalware, prosthetic limbs, a wheelchair, etc. Adaptive equipment is part of one's presentation to the everyday world, and taking it off can be as intimate as removing clothing, for many people in many contexts.
6. Holding Hands: There can be many reasons for this gesture. Physical closeness, offering comfort, or staying together in a crowd, all may have you reaching for someone.
7. Undressing someone. This can be kind of a one-way experience if the recipient isn't awake, and is often awkward for both people if they are awake. Sometimes it happens because hands are out of commission, but a more common example is someone passing out drunk. Overheating is another good reason. Different circumstances can imply different levels of intimacy.
8. Sharing secrets. This especially applies to talking about personal issues that aren't widely known. An exchange of secrets is a common ritual between "best friends" among girls and women, but appears elsewhere as well. Some things are only discussed among people with a common reference; veterans may be more comfortable discussing war memories with each other than civilians.
9. Ordering for someone in a restaurant. Acquiring food, without asking the other person what to get, shows a knowledge of their needs and desires. Providing food is also a gesture of support and sustenance.
10. Providing moral support at a major event. Helping someone get through a funeral, a trial, or other intense but not crisis situation is usually performed by a very dear friend. This is a situation where lovers or family members may be too close to the matter to be much use.
11. Crying on someone. When you cry, you tend to let your guard down. Most of the people close to you will see you cry at some point, so that can be a milestone in a relationship. Actually crying on someone, letting them hold you, is even more intimate.
12. Serving in a primary role for someone during a wedding. This includes the best man or maid of honor at a wedding, or stand-in for absent parents, etc. as well as the traditional family roles. One aspect of intimacy is sharing each other's lives, including ceremonies and transitions.
13. Comforting someone after a bad breakup. Moments of great vulnerability can bring people closer. While this role sometimes falls to family, breakup repair more often goes to a woman's female friends or a man's male friends.
14. Listening to someone's heartbeat or breathing. Close body contact, enough to carry soft personal sounds, tends to be comforting as well as connecting, as it touches on positive childhood memories for most people. It is shared between parent and child, sometimes between siblings, and later between lovers. Tight nonsexual partners may also do this.
15. Putting someone to bed. Interestingly, this activity can happen among people who are just getting to know each other -- most often if someone passes out drunk, but exhaustion can have a similar effect. It's a gesture of caring to put someone to bed rather than leave them where they drop. A milder version involves draping a blanket or coat over a person asleep on a couch or the like.
16. Sleeping in the same bed. This is an act of shared vulnerability and intimacy. Lovers customarily do this; so do some siblings or friends, especially as children. People may also be driven to share a bed, sleeping bag, etc. for warmth or lack of other accommodations in challenging circumstances.
17. Watching someone sleep. There is more vulnerability on the part of the sleeper, and more intimacy from the watcher, when only one person is asleep. Parents often watch their children sleep. Lovers sometimes do this with each other, which can be cute or creepy. It's also a guard position, useful for showing that one character seeks to protect another.
18. Waking someone up from a nightmare. A subtler form of rescue than more physical actions, this is still a gesture of protection and caring. It often leads to comfort afterwards. A typical courtesy between parent and child, or lovers, this can also be an early threshold for characters thrust together unexpectedly if one of them has sturdy daytime walls and a lot of issues. It is common, but often unspoken, among war buddies or veterans, many of whom have nightmares.
19. Sharing clothes, jewelry, other personal items. This is common between siblings or close female friends. Sometimes roommates do it too. Wearing someone else's shirt or bathrobe is typical in romantic relationships, so can suggest a similar level of intimacy even in the absence of sex.
20. Cleaning someone else's living space. This shows care and knowledge on the part of the cleaner, and trust on the part of the recipient. You have to know what NOT to throw away or move. It's typical of family members and roommates. Coworkers may clean each other's desk, office space, etc.
21. Living together. This is a big step, even if it's just for a little while. Housemates are in each other's pockets; it's hard to keep secrets. Family members and lovers often live together, but housemates who are family-of-choice form a category of their own. If you don't want a romantic partner, a permanent housemate is a good choice for someone to share your life with.
22. Childbirth. Attending the blessed event entails providing a lot of moral support for hours under high stress. It can create a bond with the baby as well as with the mother. When planned, this opportunity is only offered to the closest family members or friends, barring professionals. But it can happen by surprise in very awkward circumstances, a popular motif in fiction.
23. Saving someone's life. Quick action in a life-threatening situation demonstrates how much one person values another. This can create a strong sense of connection, and sometimes obligation. It often, though not always, entails personal risk for the rescuer. This is fairly typical for military buddies or police partners, etc.
24. Risking your life for someone. Placing someone else ahead of your own life shows their importance to you unequivocally. This often, though not always, involves trying to save or protect another person. While it can create a sense of gratitude, it frequently causes anger as well -- someone who loves you will generally object to you endangering yourself, even to protect them. Military and police buddies protect each other regularly.
25. Making emergency decisions for someone. This reveals both how well you know the person, and how much you care about them -- whether you know what they would want, and act on it even if it differs from your personal preference. Unlike some of the other options, in this one the initial action is often outweighed by the aftermath. Both characters have to deal with the results of the decisions, good or bad.
26. Deathwatch. Dying can be as intimate as giving birth. Staying with someone while they pass is an act of love; so is providing moral support to someone sitting deathwatch for a family member or other person. Many soldiers and police have done this for someone.

There had been a whole lot of not-so-subtle suggestions that perhaps maybe walking around in metal underpants wasn't a proper part of the dresscode for the reploids who were supposed to be upholding school standards. Surely being in armour wasn't necessary every waking moment of the day, especially when they were off duty? At the very least, dress down when you're off campus or something? Just relax a little, maybe.

Anyways, they were eventually forced to take the hint. Zero was just going to have to stow away his feelings about being unarmoured and go shopping.

He'd headed over to Harpuia's room to meet up - being the 'wise general' he supposedly was, Zero could only hope that he had a better grasp on how these missions were carried out. Of course, he'd completely neglected to actually remove any of his armour when he arrived - including his helmet.

Knock knock.
lovesthepain: (Oh. That guy.)

[personal profile] lovesthepain 2015-03-30 04:51 am (UTC)(link)
It... felt a little strange to consider leaving his armor behind. He had worn his Neo Arcadia uniform for so long. Maybe it was something he'd ceased having the right to wear long ago, things being what they were, but the idea of leaving it behind, his jetpack left sitting still and abandoned on a shelf...

The sound of knocking pulled him from his thoughts. He opened the door to... Zero. Still completely in full armor. Not like Harpuia was one to talk, having been too reluctant to take off a single piece himself, but it was still starting this shopping plan off on the wrong foot.

"Zero... you couldn't even leave the helmet behind?" Even the suggestion felt odd -- he'd never even thought to consider what Zero looked like without full battle armor, but things were... well, different now, weren't they?

"Come inside. If we're going to do this, we may as well do it properly."
awakeningwill: (troubled thoughts)

[personal profile] awakeningwill 2015-03-30 05:23 am (UTC)(link)
Zero responded with an unenthused grunt. "Is it that necessary?"

Well, apart from how long it would take to take off all their armour in the changing rooms. And to put them back on afterwards, since wearing the clothes out of the shop wouldn't feasibly work if they had to carry an assault vest, a pair of boots and bracers each on the way back.

Besides, it wasn't like Harpuia had gone and stripped of his armour either - they both had their helmets, and one of them was definitely more conspicuous with it on. All the same, he stepped into the room and closed the door behind him without much further complaining.
lovesthepain: (Kinda disgusted with you)

[personal profile] lovesthepain 2015-03-30 05:29 am (UTC)(link)
"Be practical about this, Zero. We may as well get used to having some of it off, at the very least." It was going to have to happen eventually -- they both knew that they would look ridiculous trying to wear human clothing over top of their combat armour, and it wouldn't do much good to go dragging it around with them if they didn't plan to wear it.

Besides, it... well, it felt a little easier to think about doing this part in private, instead of in a bunch of changing rooms. Nobody in Final Destination City particularly cared if Sage Harpuia cast aside his uniform, sure, but Sage Harpuia certainly cared.

That said, Harpuia folded his arms, more conscious than ever of the familiar and comforting weight on his back, on his head, on his arms... "You first," he announced. "Take the helmet off, at the very least."
awakeningwill: (nope stare)

[personal profile] awakeningwill 2015-03-30 05:49 am (UTC)(link)
Uh, what. After insisting and reasoning why they had to de-amour, and now he wanted Zero to go first?

"This was your idea," he said flatly. Zero crossed his arms, looking very much unwilling to compromise his bare head before the other. He'd never been under any obligation to follow a single thing the guardian told him to do - that he did so in the line of work was only when he considered the suggestion reasonable. But this felt very much like Harpuia bossing him around because he was too good to follow his own advice. Like hell he was going to comply just for that.
lovesthepain: (gettin' real sick of your shit)

[personal profile] lovesthepain 2015-03-30 06:22 am (UTC)(link)
"Really, Zero? Don't be so childish about this." Though it totally was his idea, and he totally was bossing Zero around. But when did Harpuia not boss people around, to be fair?

Still, he was the wise general for a good reason; he at least had enough sense to acknowledge that Zero had absolutely no obligation to follow any of his orders, and he knew Zero well enough to know that engaging in a battle of wills against him was a good way to waste a whole lot of time gaining no ground at all. His choices boiled down to arguing in circles or just getting it over with; in light of that knowledge, he raised his hands and gripped his helmet. One easy motion, and it was gone, set aside on a nearby desk so short brown hair could breathe for... the first time in years, honestly. Probably not since he'd been modified for military purposes instead of environmental reclamation.

So, there! Not so bad! Really! Like pulling a bandaid off, if a reploid had any familiarity whatsoever with the sensation of pulling a bandaid off. "See?" Harpuia remarked loftily. "It's not so hard, is it?"
awakeningwill: (internal struggle)

[personal profile] awakeningwill 2015-03-30 06:46 am (UTC)(link)
It's called leading by example, surely the glorious former leader of Neo Arcadia must've heard of it. But of course Harpuia would find a way to act holier-than-thou about this - Zero couldn't suppress the urge to roll his eyes a little.

"Tch." Fine. Begrudgingly, Zero put his hands against the sides of his helmet and slowly lifted it off his head, as though half expecting resistance from the thing melding to his scalp. The last time it'd been removed... well, that had been when Dr. Eggman had pried it off him, right before his grimy fingers grabbed his face, probed through his hair, altered him...

His grimace was hidden as a wave of hair fell over his face - cascades of gold tumbling everywhere, billowing and free. It was as majestic as it was impractical. Getting it back into the helmet again was going to be a chore, for sure. Zero shook his head and combed the mass out of his eyes, looking distinctly more disgusted by being helmetless than he was before.
lovesthepain: (how food)

[personal profile] lovesthepain 2015-03-30 07:06 am (UTC)(link)
It wasn't all that much of a surprise, all things considered. With all that golden hair sticking out from his helmet, one couldn't expect anything but a whole mess of blond to be under there. With no attachment to the dutiful love of a uniform, Harpuia could only guess why Zero looked so unhappy about it. Certainly not self-consciousness, he was sure of that.

Then maybe... the vulnerability of it? It wasn't all that long ago they had been enemies, and it had been far, far longer since they had both been anything but fighters. It was a sentiment Harpuia could understand -- he felt it himself, truth be told.

But progress never was an easy thing. He drew in a sharp breath and with a decisive movement, pulled off each gauntlet and discarded them. The obvious next step would have been his weapons, but... his holsters and his wings were one and the same. Harpuia, for all his decisiveness, hesitated.

"This feels strange," he admitted, gaze skittering off to the side. It contradicted the haughty air he'd just been putting on, but for all his airs, it was clear this was strange and new for the both of them.
awakeningwill: (soft realization)

[personal profile] awakeningwill 2015-03-31 05:29 am (UTC)(link)
Well, might as well get on with it. Zero wasn't going to shy away from a task simply because it took him out of his comfort zone. He tucked his hair behind his metal socket ears and set the helmet aside to get to the rest.

Where Harpuia was quick and precise, Zero's actions were measured and deliberate. There was a zen-like quality to it, the same way he cleaned his weapons. Except in this case, he was the weapon being disarmed. Each movement was a practiced motion to help clear away his thoughts, draining away the tension that clouded his thoughts, bit by bit. Twist, click, tug, open, out, each step fit into its own steady rhythm.

He was in the process of removing his second brace when Harpuia spoke, pulling him back into the real world. And... he stared. Openly.

Of all the guardians, Harpuia had always taken after X the most - but it wasn't until his helmet was off that Zero really noticed how much he physically resembled X as well. It was only natural, seeing as he was based on his DNA, but even still, Zero was a little taken off guard.

But it wasn't X. Pulling his eyes away, Zero forced his sights back down at the task at hand. "...Agreed."
lovesthepain: (WHOA what are you--)

[personal profile] lovesthepain 2015-03-31 06:19 am (UTC)(link)
Harpuia could feel Zero's eyes on him, but something about it... as unemotive as Zero was, it was hard to say whether he was just imagining it entirely, but this expression felt entirely unfamiliar to him. It was almost a strange relief that it was short-lived; he had no idea what that look meant, but even if this was only taking a few bits of armor off, it felt... weirdly personal. Zero with his hair spilling unrestrained around his face looked almost like a new reploid entirely.

"I had never once asked myself if you even had skin under there," he admitted. Coming from a society of nameless mass-produced Neo Arcadian workers and entirely nonhuman Mutos reploids, it had seemed somehow a luxury to have anything underneath their armor at all. Reploids, far more than humans, were their duties; it had been so long that Harpuia had all but forgotten what he even looked like when he wasn't a war machine. This dressing down thing... he supposed it was just a symptom of a bigger sense of aimlessness, now that they had the freedom to be... well, not human. People?

One hand rubbed his shoulder self-consciously as he delayed a little longer, waiting until Zero's second brace was off before he spoke up again. "I'm going to detatch this, but... I can't reach back there myself. Will you catch it for me?" His jetpack, if it came off at all, usually only came off for repair and maintenance situations, with technicians already at work; the degree of dependence involved in fully disarming himself hadn't really come up that often.
awakeningwill: (sore neck)

[personal profile] awakeningwill 2015-03-31 07:23 am (UTC)(link)
"There was no reason to wonder," he shrugged. "Now you know."

Apart from his face, Zero barely had any skin at all. It cut off immediately at his hairline. On the whole, his body was a lot less refined than the guardian's - less streamlined, more visible joints, the mark of an older model. But by virtue of being a hundred years out of date, it was a natural assumption for Zero to make that any reploid he encountered would be physically more advanced. Then, the truth of his cloned body came out - and while he had no regrets in destroying the original, it did make him wonder about how much of his out of date body was actually replicated over, and how much had just been thrown together.

"I think I used to have more," he mused, setting the second brace aside. Those were only impressions from the fleeting memories he recovered - his former self, taller and bulkier. More and more in this peaceful world, Zero felt like a ghost of himself. He knew he was already so much less than he used to be, piece by piece replaced or wiped away. There were holes in him that could no more hold normality as a sieve could hold sand, and they only grew more noticeable the more he tried.

Without a word, he complied to other reploid's request. Zero walked up behind him and firmly grasped the jetpacks, ready for Harpuia to release them. No reason to make this more than it was. The guardian looked uncomfortable enough asking for help already.

Harpuia couldn't begin to guess what had been lost when Omega had come to be; that was far before his time. Whatever purpose Zero had originally been built for, Harpuia had no idea, but the body he had now was clearly one meant for war. "I think it's fine as it is now," he commented. This Zero was the only one he knew, so it was perhaps a biased conclusion, but it wasn't as though lacking skin was a flaw; looking more or less "human" was purely aesthetic, nothing more.

A muted "click" sounded out as Harpuia accessed the program that unlocked internal release mechanism. It was a surprisingly anticlimactic little noise for a surprisingly anticlimactic process; just like that, the flight mechanism separated from his back, and when he stepped away, he left the jetpacks in Zero's hands. No sign that they had ever even been part of his body remained, save for some unassuming ports on his back. It always felt a bit jarring to look back and see them left behind, like he had casually pulled off an arm or leg. The lightness of his body, free of the complex machinery that made up his flight system, felt altogether foreign.

Harpuia reached his bare arms out to take the jetpacks from Zero. No thanks were offered, but he didn't want to make this any more embarrassing than it already was. "...Do you think that's enough?" He wondered, looking down at the armor that remained.

Zero furrowed his brows as he watched. He had no reason not to believe her, considering how much hair the genie had herself, but all the same he felt a sense of uncertainty. Maybe it was just the humanization talking. Pretty much everything felt unfamiliar, and he'd never had problems with his hair before it turned into, well, real hair. So many tangles...

Sounding distinctly uncomfortable in his own body, the blond frowned and replied with a hint of skepticism, "Okay..."

Feeling someone tug at your scalp wasn't ranking too high on Zero's list of things he enjoyed, so far. Though that list itself was pretty sparse to begin with... but if it was enjoyable for someone else, then at least it amounted to something.

It was a strange feeling, being complimented for his hair. It's not as though he had much of a choice in it being there, or how it looked. Still, it'd been with him his whole life, and inexorably linked to his identity, for good or ill. "I was... built with it," he deflected lamely.

But Zero could feel his face take on a touch of warmth - another effect of this human body he had so little control over. As much as he disliked thinking about the things he was built for, his hair was... his.

"I don't know what kind of hair care you've gotta do for it as a robot. Heck, I don't know much about robots period," she explained. "But as a human, especially when it's as long as yours, you've gotta keep it knot free. Trust me, you'll save yourself some hassle. And you're going to need to keep it strong. But I can help you there too."

She set the brush aside for the moment, grabbing the jar of hair cream. "I brought this stuff from back home," she explained. "I use it all the time to keep my ponytail in prime badguy whipping condition, so I think it'll handle yours!"

"It took care of itself, before," Zero admitted. "Each nanostrand is programmed to maintain shape and movement. I've never had to worry about it..."

Which explained why he was so poor at actually taking care of his hair when the time called for it, now. It couldn't help but feel a little incredulous about Shantae's products though - of all the things that Zero could use as a weapon, and they were many, hair had never managed to be one of them.

"Whipping condition...?"

"Yeah, whipping condition," Shantae explained. "Here, lemme show you."

Shantae's hair was magically prehensile to a point. As a demonstration, she held the jar out, letting the tip of her ponytail wrap around it and hold it up in front of Zero. "My hair's magic, and I use it as a whip against bad guys," she explained.

The bath had nearly filled, steam coming off the piping hot water and beginning to fog the room. Hajime carefully lined up a selection of shampoos and soaps, uncertain which would be best. Considering how grimy Zero had let himself get, potentially all of them.

"Remember, just because they smell nice doesn't mean you should eat them."
