shadowlightBy tradition, the day after my birthday is Mal's birthday, so I present to you this rarely-seen comic of Mal's from the November 1989 issue of Warped Magazine. (This was before they dropped their coverage of rock music and counterculture and became a fetish porn magazine.)
Mal in a labcoat, talking to a normal-looking guy with dark hair. Guy looks concerned.
Mal: the tests are conclusive. You're got Mundanitas Blandiosa. I'm...sorry.
Guy: I....but....is there anything you can do?
Mal: I can give you the cure, but I warn you, there are side effects.
Guy: I'll risk it. Please, Dr. Cavanaugh?
Mal: ok.
New panel. Guy is strapped in a slab ala' Frankenstein's monster, his eyes wide open in shock. headphones are taped onto his eyes, wired to a boombox. Mal has pulled down a large lever and is cackling like a mad scientist.
headphones (music, electric): "now it's Friday / I'm in love. "
new panel. much like panel 1, but Guy now has hair like Robert Smith and/or Edward Scissorhands and is holding one hand to his forehead as if to dull the ringing inside. Mal has his arms folded comfortably.
Mal: how do you feel?
Guy: wretched. I'm surrounded by sodding drones who won't wake up enough to notice the bloody world's coming apart underneath them. It makes me want to wear black dress casual all the time like I'm on the way to the funeral of some relative I really didn't care for.
Mal: ah, success.
new panel: Guy shocked. Mal sheepish.
Guy: wait... 'sodding'? 'bloody'? ....oh, Bollocks! I'm turning British!
Mal: Sorry about that part. Certain people have a genetic susceptibility. I should have known you were at-risk.
