Upcoming Elections

Hello Everyone,
As you may or may not know, Sudan is having its first democratic elections this spring. This sounds good on the surface, but in reality it's disaster. There is no doubt that Bashir will win if we don't do something about it. He is eliminating all that stand in his way, literally. People of Darfur are terrified to vote, for if they vote against him, they know that they will pay for the consequnces. Write to Obama or anyone in the White House. We need to make sure that they not only know of this situation, but that they do something about it.
Thank you.

A Psalm for Darfur

I don't know if you're religious in the Christian sense or not (i apologize if you aren't), but I was reading through the bible yesterday and came upon this psalm: Psalm 10, it's like it was written for Darfur
 Psalm 10
I think that now is a good time to think of such things. Please remember to keep Darfur and it's people in your prayers, cause that may be the biggest power that we hold.
thank you with love,

Save Darfur Icons

hello. i am new to this community, but i am certaintly not new to the Save Darfur Coalition. I am very passionate about this organization. Yet many other people seem too caught up in their own lives to take a look at what's happening in Darfur. For surely if they saw what was going on they'd want to do something about it. The biggest problem in this world today is ignorance, and for Darfur it's deadly. So i decided to spread the word in what seemed to me the easiest way. Everyone sees your icon on this website and on others. If we all just had Save Darfur icons then maybe people will stop and wonder, and finally see what's happening there. So here's a few icons. Take them and use them in hopes of making some kind of difference. Love,
~fatbird:)

Take Action: Protest

Taken from the Save Darfur Coalition:
Dear Friend,
Please join Dream for Darfur and the Save Darfur Coalition for a nationwide protest against the silence of Olympic corporate sponsors on the Darfur crisis.
On June 20, U.N. World Refugee Day, activists across the country will gather at stores and headquarters of four sponsors of the Beijing Olympics - Coca-Cola, General Electric, Swatch and Volkswagen - and demand that they use their partnership with the Chinese government to help end genocide in Darfur.
What: Spotlight on the Sponsors Day of Action
When: Friday, June 20, 11:00 a.m. (or http://www.dreamfordarfur.org/inde… for your area)
Where: http://www.dreamfordarfur.org/inde… for your area or if you live in the DC Area:
Coca-Cola Co.
800 Connecticut Ave. NW #711
Washington, DC 20006

The Chinese government has not done enough to help end genocide in Darfur. Yet, as it prepares for the 2008 Olympic Games, the Chinese government is attempting to cloak itself in the Olympic ideals of peace and brotherhood and cover up its failure to act on Darfur.
And the Olympic corporate sponsors have refused to urge China to act.
The corporate sponsors cannot turn a blind eye to genocide. Join us on June 20 and demand that they speak out to China about Darfur.
For more information, please click here.
Can't attend? You can still send all four sponsors a message. Click here to send an email to the CEO of each corporation to ask them to help end genocide.
Thank you for your commitment to Darfur, and we hope to see you on the 20th!
Best regards,
Coby Rudolph

Hello all!

I'm new here, but this looks to be a pretty promising community.

I started my interest in Darfur after watching The Devil Came On Horseback a few months ago. I became so inspired by the movie I went straight home and wrote a letter to my senator.

Alas, no response.

Has anyone else tried this? Did anyone get a response?

Sudan government: We will not honor ceasefire

The Sudan government today announced that they would no longer honor the cease-fire agreement signed with rebel groups last year. The move is in response to an attack by Darfurian rebel group JEM (Justice and Equality Movement) on the Sudanese capital of Khartoum, which we have been covering in our blog.

"We will deal swiftly with anyone who bears arms outside the armed forces or the Darfur Peace Agreement signatories. Any ceasefire will be according to our own terms," said Sudanese President Omar Al-Bashir.

In the past week, many human rights organizations have expressed increased concern over hundreds of arrests of Darfurian Zaghawa residents in Khartoum and reports of both torture and executions. The crackdowns have expanded beyond the Sudan border with the government of Egypt having expelled representatives of both JEM and the SLM (Sudanese Liberation Movement), another rebel group fighting the Sudanese government in Darfur.

AllAfrica has also posted a piece recounting the last time Khartoum was attacked in 1983, and noting the similarities between the two incidents.

Success! Darfur funding passes in House

Thursday afternoon, the House of Representatives approved an additional $334 million for the UNAMID peacekeeping operation, the hybrid UN-AU peacekeeping force in Darfur. As many regular GI-Net readers know, the UNAMID operation has been plagued with a lack of resources and funding — this bill is a huge step toward fixing this problem. Even better — this bill includes $150 million in overdue payments, known as arrears, for UN peacekeeping.

Given the recent upsurge in violence in Sudan, including attacks in North Darfur, the bombing of a Darfurian school, and even more alarming concerns that the recent rebel attack on Khartoum may provoke an armed response in Darfur, adequate funding for this operation is critical to ensuring security for the civilian population of Darfur.

But we aren't out of the woods yet...

Before the 2008 federal budget can become law, the Senate must pass their version of the bill — we need your help to make this happen! The $334 million for Darfur peacekeeping passed by the House might get cut if your senator doesn't stand up for it. Sign up for GI-Net's Action Alert newsletter or bookmark the RSS feed to find out when your phone calls can make the difference in passing this bill and helping to ensure safety for millions of Darfurian civilians still threatened by violence and rape.
