Sudan government: We will not honor ceasefire

The Sudan government today announced that they would no longer honor the cease-fire agreement signed with rebel groups last year. The move is in response to an attack by Darfurian rebel group JEM (Justice and Equality Movement) on the Sudanese capital of Khartoum, which we have been covering in our blog.

"We will deal swiftly with anyone who bears arms outside the armed forces or the Darfur Peace Agreement signatories. Any ceasefire will be according to our own terms," said Sudanese President Omar Al-Bashir.

In the past week, many human rights organizations have expressed increased concern over hundreds of arrests of Darfurian Zaghawa residents in Khartoum and reports of both torture and executions. The crackdowns have expanded beyond the Sudan border with the government of Egypt having expelled representatives of both JEM and the SLM (Sudanese Liberation Movement), another rebel group fighting the Sudanese government in Darfur.

AllAfrica has also posted a piece recounting the last time Khartoum was attacked in 1983, and noting the similarities between the two incidents.
