So Unlike THEM

Worst Article EVER!!!!

So, as *unacademic* as it sounds, I'm working on a paper about Sailor Moon and Japanese religion. In my quest for information, I mostly got books on the religion part, but I did find a book containing an article on Sailor Moon. I got the book thinking, " Hey cool, maybe there will be something I can use!" Before I get on my soapbox, if anyone wants to see this for themselves, the book is Japan Pop! by Timothy Craig, the Sailor Moon article begins on page 259.
Starting out, I generally did not like the vibe of this girls writing. Something about it already makes you go," This got published?" The first half of the first paragraph is one very long sentence. But I was still giving it a chance the first time through....something does bother me about how she phrased "in addition to the manga there are a weekly television cartoon show...." etc...but it makes it sound like the show was still airing new episodes. This book was published in 2000, so I highly doubt this was written before the series ended in Japan. By the third paragraph she has to go into Power Rangers, which lasts forever because it's background information to set up "oh Sailor Moon is a miracle!" Her background information seems really well researched and varied, and I'm not a nutt about any of the shows/manga she mentions but I do know *something* of them.
As to the actual Sailor Moon part....first off, pet peeve, but she can't decide if she has a preference for the Japanese names/words over the English. She even goes so far as to quote part of her interview with a NINE YEAR OLD GIRL when she says she likes Sailor Moon's style (style ga ii) omg, what is the *point* of that????? She talks about Sailor Moon's sex appeal, and uses this awful manga image, with Sailor Moon wearing a cape? okay...anyway, here's the *really* good stuff. I want to know, if anyone remembers (because I did just watch the first episode not that long ago, in Japanese) when Usagi looks at her score, 30, if she sees some new girl at school getting a 100 and being rewarded by her parents with a pretty necklace??????? Where did that come from? Was it in the DIC version? I dunno, I felt *really* confused when I read that. The author runs the first episode summary right into talking about Ami and Usagi being different but still becoming friends. Also a bad sign, she say Negaverse, ew. According to the author, Usagi transforms into Sailor Moon using her PENLIKE DEVICE called "moon prism". Oh please....please, she confused her transformation pen with her henshin brooch. Her writing continues to be poor running things together so much and she reiterates all the time that the Scouts (wouldn't you say senshi?) fight *ALL* the time with each other.
My FAVORITE PART that makes me think this Alice chic knows NOTHING about Japan and must have watched maybe ten subbed episodes to write this:
She states that Rei lives in a BUDDHIST TEMPLE.
WHAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SHE'S A MIKO!!!!!!!!!!!!! Miko = SHINTO SHRINE.
I actually stopped reading here because five more pages of this very poorly written junk was more than my love of Sailor Moon could take. A quick scan of some of these pages does however show that the author has most likely seen only the first season, most likely dubbed (she calles Usagi by her Japanese name once, and only calls Mamoru Darien), and did not even see the end of the season because while she hemmed and hawwed about death in the original Power Rangers, she does not mention the last episode at all! Even the junked up DiC version clearly showed that the Senshi DIE!
I hope no one minds too much, but I had to share my pain and great rage with someone that something like *this* could be published in a book, and it had to be about our beloved Sailor Moon. It makes me so *very* sad. Perhaps in light of the need for more peer review in our community, I'll post my paper here and let you guys tell me where I got it wrong?
