The ventricular pressure profile is characteristic of the cardiac contraction progress and is useful to evaluate the cardiac performance. In this contribution, a tissue-level electromechanical model of the left ventricle is proposed, to assist the interpretation of left ventricular pressure waveforms. The left ventricle has been modeled as an ellipsoid composed of twelve mechano-hydraulic sub-systems. The asynchronous contraction of these twelve myocardial segments has been represented in order to reproduce a realistic pressure profiles. To take into account the different energy (...) domains involved, the tissue-level scale and to facilitate the building of a modular model, multiple formalisms have been used: Bond Graph formalism for the mechano-hydraulic aspects and cellular automata for the electrical activation. An experimental protocol has been defined to acquire ventricular pressure signals from three pigs, with different afterload conditions. Evolutionary Algorithms have been used to identify the model parameters in order to minimize the error between experimental and simulated ventricular pressure signals. Simulation results show that the model is able to reproduce experimental ventricular pressure. In addition, electro-mechanical activation times have been determined in the identification process. For example, the maximum electrical activation time is reached, respectively, 96.5, 139.3 and 131.5 ms for the first, second, and third pigs. These preliminary results are encouraging for the application of the model on non-invasive data like ECG, arterial pressure or myocardial strain. (shrink)

The objective of the current study was to propose a sensitivity analysis of a 3D left ventricle model in order to assess the influence of parameters on myocardial mechanical dispersion. A finite element model of LV electro-mechanical activity was proposed and a screening method was used to evaluate the sensitivity of model parameters on the standard deviation of time to peak strain. Results highlight the importance of propagation parameters associated with septal and lateral segments activation. Simulated curves were compared to (...) myocardial strains, obtained from echocardiography of one healthy subject and one patient diagnosed with intraventricular dyssynchrony and coronary artery disease. Results show a close match between simulation and clinical strains and illustrate the model ability to reproduce myocardial strains in the context of intraventricular dyssynchrony. (shrink)

In this paper, a mathematical model of the respiratory mechanics is used to reproduce experimental signal waveforms acquired from three newborn lambs. As the main challenge is to determine specific lamb parameters, a sensitivity analysis has been realized to find the most influent parameters, which are identified using an evolutionary algorithm. Results show a close match between experimental and simulated pressure and flow waveforms obtained during spontaneous ventilation and pleural pressure variations acquired during the application of positive pressure, since root (...) mean square errors equal to 0.0119, 0.0052 and 0.0094. The identified parameters were discussed in light of previous knowledge of respiratory mechanics in the newborn. (shrink)

A method for the recursive identification of physiological models of the cardiovascular baroreflex is proposed and applied to the time-varying analysis of vagal and sympathetic activities. The proposed method was evaluated with data from five newborn lambs, which were acquired during injection of vasodilator and vasoconstrictors and the results show a close match between experimental and simulated signals. The model-based estimation of vagal and sympathetic contributions were consistent with physiological knowledge and the obtained estimators of vagal and sympathetic activities were (...) compared to traditional markers associated with baroreflex sensitivity. Cet ouvrage explore les critiques du donné dans le néokantisme et la phénoménologie allemands. Il révèle la portée considérable de ces critiques, qui impliquent en même temps une controverse avec le positivisme de la fin du XIXème siècle et un dialogue substantiel avec l’Esthétique transcendantale de Kant. En posant les questions de la sensation et de la perception, la présente monographie permet de ménager un accès privilégié aux enjeux fondamentaux de la philosophie austro-allemande au tournant du XXème siècle. Lorsqu’il est (...) question du donné ou des critiques du donné dans le discours philosophique contemporain, et cela arrive souvent dans les débats sur la perception en philosophie de l’esprit, c’est toujours à la controverse analytique autour du « mythe du donné » que l’on fait référence – controverse, qui a vu le jour en 1956, lorsque le philosophe américain Wilfrid Sellars publie Empirisme et philosophie de l’esprit. Or, il est intéressant d’observer que la critique sellarsienne du « mythe du donné » a été préfigurée, en un sens partiel mais important, par les objections que les néokantiens et les phénoménologues ont adressées à la notion de donné au tournant du XXesiècle. La présente monographie comble cette lacune béante de l’historiographie classique, qui a jusqu’ici accordé peu d’attention à la constance de cette critique dans toutes les philosophies marquées par l’héritage de Kant. Du simple devoir d’assistance dans des situations ponctuelles à des projets de transformation des conditions de vie animale à grande échelle, la défense de l’interventionnisme entre en conflit avec la pensée conservationniste qui valorise la naturalité ou l’autonomie des systèmes écologiques. Dans cet article, nous tentons de mettre en dialogue les intuitions interventionnistes et la pensée conservationniste. Nous (...) exposons tout d’abord l’argument interventionniste et ses limites épistémiques. Nous mitigeons ensuite le constat selon lequel les conditions de vie des animaux sauvages justifient notre intervention en replaçant le problème de la souffrance dans un cadre évolutif et écologique plus large puis en insistant sur d’autres obligations vis-à-vis des animaux sauvages comme le respect de leur autonomie ou de leur souveraineté. Enfin, nous défendons une conception pluraliste de nos relations au monde naturel dans laquelle le souci pour les animaux s’équilibre avec d’autres valeurs écocentrées. Nous concluons en présentant les ressources encore peu explorées d’une conservation compassionnelle qui intègre le souci pour les individus et le souci pour les collectifs écologiques dans les normes de ses actions. | : The ubiquity of suffering in the wild raises the question of our obligation to intervene. From a simple duty of assistance in particular situations to large-scale projects aimed at transforming animal living conditions, the defense of interventionism often conflicts with conservationist values, which emphasize the naturalness or autonomy of ecological systems. In this article, we attempt to open a dialogue between interventionist intuitions and the conservationist school of thought. We first expose the interventionist argument and its epistemic limitations. We subsequently mitigate the statement according to which the living conditions of wild animals justify human intervention by replacing the problem of suffering in a broader ecological and evolutionary framework, as well as by insisting on other obligations that we may have towards wild animals, such as the respect of their autonomy and sovereignty. Finally, we defend a pluralistic conception of our relationships to the natural world, in which care for animals has to be balanced with other, eco-centered, values. We conclude by presenting the resources of a compassionate conservation approach, which remains largely unexplored and integrates care for individual animals as well as for ecological entities in its norm for action. In the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, new ways of storytelling and inventing fictions appeared in the French-speaking areas of Europe. This new art still influences our global culture of fiction. Virginie Greene explores the relationship between fiction and the development of neo-Aristotelian logic during this period through a close examination of seminal literary and philosophical texts by major medieval authors, such as Anselm of Canterbury, Abélard, and Chrétien de Troyes. This study of Old French logical fictions encourages a broader (...) theoretical reflection about fiction as a universal human trait and a defining element of the history of Western philosophy and literature. Additional close readings of classical Greek philosophers Plato and Aristotle, and modern analytic philosophy including the work of Bertrand Russell and Rudolf Carnap, demonstrate peculiar traits of Western rationalism and expose its ambivalent relationship to fiction. According to the Appraisal-Tendency Framework (Han, Lerner, & Keltner, 2007), certainty-associated emotions increase risk taking compared with uncertainty-associated emotions. To date, this general effect has only been shown in static judgement and decision-making paradigms; therefore, the present study tested the effect of certainty on risk taking in a sequential decision-making task. We hypothesised that the effect would be reversed due to the kind of processing involved, as certainty is considered to encourage heuristic processing that takes into account the emotional cues (...) arising from previous decisions, whereas uncertainty leads to more systematic processing. One hundred and one female participants were induced to feel one of three emotions (film clips) before performing a decision-making task involving risk (Game of Dice Task; Brand et al., 2005). As expected, the angry and happy participants (certainty-associated emotions) were more likely than the fearful participants (uncertainty-associated emotion) to make safe decisions (vs. risky decisions). The majority of evidence on social anxiety -linked attentional biases to threat comes from research using facial expressions. Emotions are, however, communicated through other channels, such as voice. Despite its importance in the interpretation of social cues, emotional prosody processing in SA has been barely explored. This study investigated whether SA is associated with enhanced processing of task-irrelevant angry prosody. Fifty-three participants with high and low SA performed a dichotic listening task in which pairs of male/female voices were presented, one (...) to each ear, with either the same or different prosody. Participants were instructed to focus on either the left or right ear and to identify the speaker’s gender in the attended side. Our main results show that, once attended, task-irrelevant angry prosody elicits greater interference than does neutral prosody. Surprisingly, high socially anxious participants were less prone to distraction from attended-angry prosody than were low socially anxious individuals. These findings emphasise the importance of examining SA-related biases across modalities. (shrink)

Devant le constat du déclin toujours plus rapide de la diversité biologique et les limites des res- sources disponibles pour l’enrayer, il est nécessaire de déterminer quels moyens devraient être engagés dans sa protection. Pour ce faire, une méthode efficace serait d’évaluer les bénéfices tirés de la biodiversité afin d’estimer rationnellement les coûts légitimes de sa protection. L’évaluation économique, qui se présente d’emblée sur un mode quantitatif, serait alors un outil précieux. Dans ce texte, nous présentons différentes méthodes d’évaluation économique (...) de la biodiversité ainsi que certaines de leurs limites méthodologiques. Par la suite, nous montrons qu’en dépit de ses avantages pratiques, l’évaluation économique échoue à représenter l’ensemble des valeurs en jeu dans la protection de la biodiversité. Nous décrivons alors trois types de valeurs incommen- surables avec des bénéfices économiques : la valeur de legs, qui renvoie aux obligations de trans- mission du patrimoine naturel dont nous avons hérité ; la valeur d’existence, qui renvoie à la considération morale d’intérêts autres que ceux des êtres humains ; la valeur de transformation, qui renvoie à la capacité d’examiner et de critiquer nos préférences et inclinaisons afin d’inclure celles-ci dans une vision du monde rationnelle et cohérente. Pour conclure, nous plaidons en faveur de l’élaboration de méthodes de concertation et d’évaluation participatives et pluralistes permettant de rendre compte de la diversité et de l’hétérogénéité des valeurs de la biodiversité. The objective of this paper is to reconstruct Husserl’s two-pronged approach of sensory givenness. On the one hand, the phenomenological focus on intentional consciousness implies a virulent criticismof the positivistic myth of the sensory given. On the other hand, there is also a positive appeal to sensory givenness in phenomenology, without which phenomenology would not be worthy of its name and would, ultimately, be nothing other than a form of neo-Kantianism. In the context of transcendental genetic phenomenology, Husserl manages to (...) rehabilitate sensory givenness in a reduced, viz. demythologized form. This reconstruction of Husserl’s ambivalent reference to the given can help phenomenology defend itself against some actual trends, which tend to reduce it to phenomenalismor to conceptualism. Le tournant transcendantal de la phénoménologie, entamé dès les années 1906, ouvre la voie à une réhabilitation du concept positiviste de donné de la sensation sous sa forme phénoménologique réduite : Husserl parle dorénavant de « données hylétiques ». Une fois que la sensation est conçue comme une hylè, à savoir comme un simple moment abstrait au sein d’un contenu noético-noématique complexe, elle peut de nouveau être dite « donnée » à un niveau transcendantal, en tant que fondement du vécu (...) intentionnel, et ce, sans pour autant retomber dans les contradictions inhérentes au positivisme, dénoncées de façon définitive dans la phénoménologie réaliste de la perception. Nous montrerons que ces données hylétiques jouent un rôle fondamental dans la phénoménologie transcendantale. Dans les Idées déjà, la hylè exerce une fonction falsificatrice ; en tant que contrainte matérielle, elle peut amener à une révision ou à une réfutation des horizons noématiques de l’objet. Cette fonction sera amplifiée grâce au tournant génétique de la phénoménologie transcendantale, qui va permettre, en outre, à Husserl de rendre à la hylè la détermination et la structuration gestaltiste dont il l’avait privée, pour des raisons méthodiques, dans la phase statique de la phénoménologie transcendantale. Natorp ne se contente pas de critiquer le concept positiviste de donné, mais il émet également des objections puissantes contre l’idée d’un accès immédiat au donné dans la description telle qu’elle est défendue dans la psychologie empirique des Brentaniens et dans toute théorie phénoménologique de la perception. Au mythe d’un donné logiquement nu qui pourrait servir de point de départ pour une théorie de la perception, Natorp oppose l’hypothèse d’une ὕλη pensée comme origine subjective accessible seulement au terme d’une reconstruction (...) génétique. Dans ce chapitre, nous proposons une reconstruction de cette première définition de l’être-donné à partir des deux premiers écrits psychologiques de Natorp, l’Introduction à la Psychologie de 1888 et la Psychologie générale sous la forme de principes directeurs pour l’enseignement universitaire de 1904. L’objectif de cette étude, conformément à son titre, « Le donné en question », était double. Il s’agissait à la fois de reconstruire les questions du donné et de définir la nature du donné en question : quel est le sens du “donné” qui est en question et en quoi consistent ses remises en question dans le néokantisme et la phénoménologie? Nous sommes à présent en mesure de répondre à ces interrogations, et c’est ce que nous ferons dans un premier (...) temps. Nous indiquerons ensuite quelques correspondances entre cette controverse “continentale” sur le donné dans le néokantisme et la phénoménologie au tournant du XX e siècle et le débat outre-Atlantique autour du « mythe du donné » (Myth of the Given), initié par Wilfrid Sellars en 1956. Cela nous permettra de signaler en dernier lieu l’actualité et la portée des questions et des solutions néokantiennes et phénoménologiques pour les débats contemporains sur le contenu de la perception en philosophie de l’esprit. Dans ce chapitre, nous entreprenons de reconstruire la critique que le néokantien Paul Natorp adresse au “pseudo-donné” (falsches Gegebene) positiviste dans ses premiers écrits logiques, notamment dans un article intitulé « Fondation objective et fondation subjective de la connaissance », datant de 1887. De façon intéressante, cette critique du pseudo-donné ne se conclut pas par l’abandon pur et simple de toute idée de donation, mais s’accompagne d’emblée d’une exigence de reconfiguration de la notion : une fois dénoncé le mythe « (...) positiviste » du donné, il s’agit en effet pour le jeune Natorp de définir le “vrai sens de l’être-donné” (echter Sinn der Gegebenheit). Or, ce qui est vraiment donné, ce n’est précisément pas quelque chose comme un datum singulier et ultime, qui pourrait servir de fondement à la connaissance, mais une tâche (Aufgabe) pour la pensée. Il s’agit de présenter le projet, la place et la centralité de L’essence de la manifestation dans l’œuvre de M. Henry, puisque c’est dans cet ouvrage qu’il a mis au jour les présuppositions de sa phénoménologie de la vie et de l’intériorité subjective, présuppositions qu’il fera travailler dans tous les ouvrages qui lui succéderont, ceci jusqu’à L’incarnation. (...) Elle s’oppose à une phénoménologie du monde, de l’extériorité et de l’objectivité. Son concept central, celui de chair, pense la matière affective du Soi, c’est-à-dire du corps subjectif. Il est inséparable d’une thèse : à savoir que la corporéité (rapport au corps) est antérieure à l’intentionnalité (rapport au monde). Une phénoménologie du corps subjectif est donc apte à saisir la vie dans son immanence. Elle conduit à une archéologie de la chair dans l’Incarnation, analyse de la matière constituante de la vie qui précède et habite toute intentionnalité. (shrink)

This article explores the characteristics of the mother/daughter or teacher/dancer relationship during the training process to become a classical dancer at two distinct time periods. It uses written testimonies about student life at the Opera during the 19th century and oral history concerning contemporary dancers. Both in the past and today, mothers and teachers limited girls’ efforts to acquire the status of mature women. In the 19th century, the older women intervened in the matrimonial choices of young dancers and, at (...) times, forced them to work for the family, while today they seek to maintain ballerinas in their status as “girls.”. It shows that the differences between both theories are significant and that they culminate in a deep philosophical opposition between the intellectualism of Master Eckhart and the voluntarism of Böhme. Dans le dernier quart du XIXe siècle, à une époque où l’esprit positiviste triomphait dans les sciences de la nature et dans la psychologie scientifique naissante, le concept de donné (das Gegebene, Gegebenes), véritable clef de voûte du positivisme, fut la cible de virulentes critiques en philosophie. Parmi les témoignages présents dans la littérature de langue allemande de cette époque, on trouve notamment cette question formulée par le philosophe Karl Groos : « Le donné en question est-il vraiment donné? » (...) (‘Gibt’ es überhaupt ‘Gegebenes’?). Loin d’être tautologique, comme on pourrait le penser au premier abord, cette formule parvient à exprimer de manière efficace la perplexité partagée par toute une génération de philosophes vis-à-vis de l’être-donné dudit donné positiviste. Dans le néokantisme et la phénoménologie, à savoir dans les deux mouvements les plus influents au tournant du XXe siècle, cette perplexité a motivé une véritable problématisation de la notion de donné de la sensation ainsi qu’une réflexion approfondie sur les différents modes, tantôt intentionnels, tantôt conceptuels, de donation dudit donné. Après avoir exposé la polysémie du concept positiviste du donné, nous reconstruirons la genèse de ce concept philosophique chez Kant et Herbart. (shrink)

Ah! Nana was a comic strip magazine published between 1976 and 1978. It was adapted from the magazine Wimmen’s comix which appeared in the US in the 1970’s. Ah! Nana was produced entirely by women and was meant to be read by women, as such it stands as a pioneer in the world of French comics. Its’ content reflected feminist concerns of its time and dealt with an array of highly sensitive and taboo topics for the late 1970’s, such as (...) incest and violence against women. Reports on particular themes were enhanced by a straightforward layout with raw and sometimes cruel images. It takes a great deal to change mentalities dramatically, however. Did Ah! Nana’s women go too far? At any rate, this project emerged too early and was too unusual to survive. It was a commercial failure which censorship ultimately condemned. Still, Ah! Nana – a project which so far has never been renewed in France – offered the possibility for women to express themselves in comics and its existence illustrates their difficulties in being published. Cet article propose d’examiner la manière dont les pratiques médicales informelles utilisant les cellules humaines ont été réunies en une technologie intégrée sur deux décennies. Dans ce processus, les débats de la bioéthique constituent un dispositif d’épreuves permettant d’unifier ces pratiques disparates sous le label commun de « thérapie cellulaire ». En établissant des articulations possibles entre la production matérielle d’un savoir médical et ses inscriptions institutionnelles, le travail de requalification bioéthique s’effectue suivant trois registres. Tout d’abord, les controverses bioéthiques (...) assignent un label médical à des technologies qui n’existent alors que sous la forme de projet articulé à des pratiques de laboratoire . Ensuite, elles définissent des entités du vivant en objet technique, par exemple en dissociant les cellules souches de l’embryon. Enfin, elles introduisent des catégories distinctes de pratiques à partir d’une même technique. En ce sens, la bioéthique constitue un standard politique, inextricable de l’action publique en matière de biotechnologies. Suivre la construction sociale des objets biologiques conduit à établir un modèle de standardisation des innovations biomédicales et à promouvoir une sociologie pragmatique basée sur la genèse des standards.This article focuses on how informal medical practices using human cells had been joined together in the shape of integrated technology for two decades. The debates of bioethics are part of this constant process ; they intervene as a test plan enabling to qualify these disparate practices to which they relate by the name of cell therapies. By establishing possible links between the material production of medical knowledge and its institutional inscriptions, the work of bioethics re-qualification is carried out according to three levels. First, bioethics controversies assign a medical label to technologies which do not exist except in the form of projects articulated through laboratory practices . Second, they define entities of the living as technical object, for example, by dissociating the stem cells from an embryo. Lastly, they introduce distinct categories of practices coming from the same technical roots. In this sense, bioethics constitutes a political standard, inextricable from public action in biotechnologies. Tracking the social construction of biological objects leads to establish a standardization pattern of biomedical innovations and to promote a pragmatics sociology based on the standards genesis. Social-rank cues communicate social status or social power within and between groups. Information about social-rank is fluently processed in both visual and auditory modalities. So far, the investigation on the processing of social-rank cues has been limited to studies in which information from a single modality was assessed or manipulated. Yet, in everyday communication, multiple information channels are used to express and understand social-rank. We sought to examine the voluntary nature of processing of facial and vocal signals of social-rank using (...) a cross-modal Stroop task. In two experiments, participants were presented with face-voice pairs that were either congruent or incongruent in social-rank. Participants’ task was to label face social dominance while ignoring the voice, or label voice social dominance while ignoring the face. In both experiments, we found that face-voice incongruent stimuli were processed more slowly and less accurately than were the congruent stimuli in the face-attend and the voice-attend tasks, exhibiting classical Stroop-like effects. These findings are consistent with the functioning of a social-rank bio-behavioural system which consistently and automatically monitors one’s social standing in relation to others and uses that information to guide behaviour. In France, more than 760,000 disabled persons seek one or several services care or family caregivers with an ascendancy for the family caregivers. Their presence with the disabled persons is indispensable to their life. Caregiver seems plural and to define them can turn out delicate. Indeed about is the legal framework of the request of the care, the definition of caregiver takes on at the same time a financial character and a human character. Considering the human and financial stakes which (...) could then restrict their presence, it seemed to us necessary to define at best this caregiver by being interested more particularly in its definition in labor law and in legal redress. Résumé Le silence de Lorna de Jean-Pierre et Luc Dardenne met en scène la grossesse fictive que Lorna s’invente suite à la disparition de Claudy. La perte de l’être aimé engendre une mélancolie qui s’appréhende dans une dépersonnalisation de la chair féminine. Est analysée la manière qu’ont les cinéastes de rendre présente la relation à l’absent, et de parler de leur création, soit d’une chair masculine qui crée, par l’intermédiaire de l’enfantement de Lorna, qui devient leur ego alter.
